Stephen featured Crimea in his never-ending segment "*Better Know A Geopolitical Flashpoint*" which is fine, but he still hasn't finished doing "Better Know a District." In fact my district got nothing more than a two-second flyby. But I guess there is more going on in Crimea than in my home district, so I will be a grown up and not complain.
Part of the reason Stephen did a segment on Crimea was to highlight the Cold War. Part of the reason he highlighted the Cold War was to show off his Shoe Phone and his Shoe Answering Machine. And part of the reason he wanted to show off his Shoe Phone was to demonstrate how amazingly limber he is. Thanks hot yoga.
As all the unrest is going on over in Crimea and the Ukraine, President Obama is being criticized by politicians and people on TV who talk about news events. President Obama is spotted in the Oval Offices wearing jeans and a casual shirt while talking to Vlad Putin on a 90 minute phone call. This is wrong of course. He should be wearing:
* Suit and Tie because otherwise he doesn't look like he cares what Americans and the world think
or
* No shirt because you know that's what Putin is wearing and it looks like the President doesn't care what Americans and the world think
With all this controversy and whining, Stephen has decided to conduct his own poll. I believe it will be every bit as valid as the one over at Fox News. Go to Colbert Nation .com and answer the question:
"What do 'You' think about what Americans think world leaders think about President Obama?"
You choices are:
Yes
No
Vegetarian Option
Just look for that blue banner, with the words TAKE THE POLL NOW right above the video of Stephen. If you care about the world, you should take the poll. Let Stephen know what you think.
Stephen is outraged by the veto last week by Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona SB1062. Stephen had some insight into her daily meetings with Hansel and Gretel which I was not aware of. But never mind that. Basically, it was all about cake and pastry. Some, however, say that this was about discriminating against the gays. Others say it is about "self-professed behavior." Case in point, Steve King of Iowa. Stephen had a clear explanation of this whole issue.
What it all boils down to is it would be helpful to send "verification" to Steve King to clear up any confusion that might exist. Here's the address:
Representative Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
A good suggestion from Stephen Colbert about the material you send to Steve King is to label it Campaign Contributions thusly:
Campaign Contributions
Rep.Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
This will guarantee that the Rep Rep (short for Republican Representative) Steve King will read it.
Stephen's guest last night was basically someone who does it all. Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist, a composer, a visual artist, an author, the father of Virtual Reality, a scientist, a scholar, and an inventor. That list is probably not complete. He also has great hair and a wonderful laugh which was demonstrated audibly as he watched Stephen work his way slowly from the journalism desk to the interview desk. Stephen, you better be careful; you do not want to break your wrist again!!! Jaron Lanier has a book out, "Who Owns the Future?"
I am sure the interview could have gone on for an hour, but I will just talk about a few ideas thrown out. Jaron Lanier said that real wealth is community wealth. That's the basic 'we all do better when we all do better' line of thought. Both men were wearing special eyeglasses that gave them special powers. Our middle class is disappearing. Stephen thinks virtual reality could solve that problem, but I think he was not thinking it through completely. As smart as Jaron Lanier is, he admitted at the end of the interview that basically, Stephen had won the interview.

Da Doo Ron Ron
Stephen talked last night about the Olympics being over. He also mentioned what a drag it was for the choice of uniforms that the Speed Skaters wore. Apparently the vents caused drag and thus they did not do very well in Sochi. That's okay, it meant we got to see Stephen's choice of clothing when he is out and about driving his car. Looking good, Stephen. But of course I must say, "Kids, don't try this at home."
And then somehow, Stephen was able to turn the focus of the show to an interview by Jillert Anema which resulted in Stephen vowing to get rid of his doggone wooden shoes. (Jillert Anema, Netherlands Speedskating Coach, had an opinion of the whole situation of winners and losers in Speedskating which was not shared by Stephen.) Now, if you would like to get a pair of wooden shoes just like the Windmill Design Wooden Shoes that Stephen got rid of, check out Dutch Village Shopping (conveniently located in Holland, Michigan) and purchase your special pair.
To wear with your fashionable Windmill Design Wooden Shoes, why not also chip in a mere $30 and get a beautiful blue Blade in the USA T-shirt and help out the American Speedskating team at the same time.
Ukraine. Gideon Rose, Editor for "Foreign Affairs," joined Stephen to catch up on the news coming out of the Ukraine. It can go either way for the Ukraine and we will be hearing lots of news about this country in days and weeks to come.
Stephen's guest last night was a real treat - Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who stars in "20 Feet From Stardom," Darlene Love. Back in the 1960s, Darlene Love was a background singer for such musicians and groups as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Tom Jones, Sam Cooke, The Righteous Brothers, Cher, Dionne Warwick, and The Mamas and The Papas. And now she's a Lead Singer. They briefly discussed the different skills needed for doing background singing or lead singing. We got to hear answers to such questions as "Did you have any bad boys?" and "How much about African American, Soul or Blues music did you learn from Elvis Presley?"
For those of you who don't think you have heard Darlene Love sing all that often, remember, she was in the background quite a bit. If you Google Darlene Love and David Letterman, you will find out that she shows up at Christmas to sing on The Late Show with Letterman Show. Also, fans of Saturday Night Live might remember that it was Darlene Love singing "Christmastime for the Jews" which had a guest appearance by friend of the show, Jon Stewart.
We were treated to Darlene Love singing "He's a Rebel." That's a tender song, sung with gusto, about the benefits of always seeing the good side of people, even when others might not agree with you.
Go to Colbert Nation for a web exclusive of Darlene Love singing "Da Doo Ron Ron."
At the end of the show, Stephen gave a tribute to Harold Ramis who died recently. He brought so many great moments (as an actor or director, etc) --- Ghostbusters, Stripes, Animal House, Meatballs, Caddyshack, Vacation, Groundhog Day, The Human Centipede and much more. He was a role model for Stephen Colbert. Here's a short clip of Harold Ramis in "Stripes" doing "Da Doo Ron Ron."

Action, Camera, Lights....
The logical title would have been "Lights, Camera, Action" but I decided to spice things up a bit and put the words in alphabetical order. Stephen is back tonight. It seems like it's been forever, but it's only been three weeks, give or take a few days. Getting back to the title though. Typically on a TV or movie set first you would turn on the lights and make sure those are all working and that there was the correct amount of good lighting. Then you would turn on the cameras, again making sure they were working correctly. Only then would the actors begin with their lines or songs or dances, etc.
One can imagine someone like Stephen shaking it up and doing it my way. First the actors start talking and moving around. Then the cameras start rolling. Finally the lights come on but by now people have been unable to read their cue cards, someone has tripped over the dog on the rug by the fireplace, the butler has poured the bourbon into grandma's lap, and everything is in general disarray.
Oh my gosh. You can see what three weeks without The Colbert Report has done to me. I've had to make up these little scenarios just to keep myself entertained. Thank heavens Stephen will be back in just a few hours.
Here's what's up for this week, according to Colbert Nation. Tonight is Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Co-founder. This should be really interesting. I think he might talk about soup. Then we have Chris Kluwe, football player, from the Minnesota Vikings. Neil Shubin will show up on Wednesday and I have a feeling Stephen might get confused about Organismal Biology and Anatomy. Maybe not, but there is that possibility. Rounding out the week is Ben Gibbard, musician, so the possibility of some music at the end of the week is there to tempt us.
I am so glad he is back. My brain has been wasting away watching the mainstream liberal media and trying to make sense of it all by myself. Tonight, Stephen will make sense of it for me, and I can once again be informed.
Welcome back!

Isaac to Trump: You're Fired
First off, I want to say what great opening credits those are for this week's "Tampa 2012 - America Strikes Back." Someone should make a movie.
Two things are going on in the country now. The Republican National Convention in Tampa and Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf Coast. Because of one of these events, the other event had to change its course. And since it's pretty hard to make a hurricane change course, you have probably figured out that its the Republican Convention that changed course. Well, changed its schedule, so almost the same thing. As a result, Donald "The Donald" Trump did not get to give his speech. Here was about the only platform where Donald Trump would be able to share his views and he lost out on that chance. When will we ever get to hear him talk again? I just don't know.
Other speakers have canceled in order to go back to their states and be there for the hurricane: Governors Rick Scott of Florida, Robert Bentley of Alabama and Phil Bryant of Mississippi. That's okay, there are plenty of other people at the Convention. Chris Christie will give the keynote speech, Paul Ryan will accept the Vice Presidential nomination and Marco Rubio is Hispanic. Time permitting, Mitt Romney will speak.
The most important thing happening at the Convention isn't happening in Tampa. It is happening online, on the Internet over at Colbert Nation. Stephen mentioned that Tampa is known for its strip bars and they are expecting to do a brisk business form delegates. Therefore security is tight. Everyone should have a security pass and so everyone should go here to get their Tampa 2012: America Strikes Back All-Access Pass. Even if you choose not to get one, you should at least go look at the choices on the form. You will find out a lot about yourself just by the choices you make.
You will need to fill in the usual things, your name, your sexuality, your most urgent lower taxes priority, your home state, your summer home state, your ski home state and your tax haven country. Also you will be asked to vote for your favorite Repetitive Republican.
You may remember that Todd Akin made waves last week with his statements that reflected his knowledge of how the female body works. Stephen tried to clear up all the confusion with his Hoo-Ha Lady Zone 5000. He was able to lay it all out for us to show the workings of the female reproductive system, including the dragon that guards the entrance. Good. Now we know. If you need any more info, just stop by any strip joint.
Stephen also talked briefly about Rep. Steve King, Congressman from Iowa, (not to be confused with Stephen King who talks about and writes about scary stuff). Rep. King defended Akin and Stephen shared videos of Rep. King being so fair and balanced that he will say one thing and then say the opposite. I think he's supporting both sides of an issue. Stephen Colbert just thinks Rep. King can't hear what comes out of his mouth.
The guest was Andrew Sullivan, political conservative and Editor of The Dish over at The Daily Beast. He claims to be a conservative. Yet he supports Barack Obama for President, even more so than he did when Barack Obama first ran in 2008. But that's just because the other party has gotten nutsier than they were the last time around. This was indeed an interesting discussion by two conservatives, talking about the upcoming presidential election.
I'm pretty sure we will hear more in the coming days about this election. It's just a feeling I have.

Out-of-Studio Experiences
As I expected, it is repeats this week. Mark Shriver, Woody Harrelson, The Flaming Lips and fun. are on tap for this week. I know this not because I'm some "The Colbert Report" insider, but because I check out Colbert Nation on a regular basis. You can go there, scroll down a bit and see Upcoming Guests. While the repeats may be a disappointment to some people, the obvious explanation is right under the photo of "fun. (Repeat)." It says "Out-of-Studio Experiences." Occasionally, Stephen needs to leave the studio to cover the big stories. Remember when he went to Vancouver? Remember all the coverage of Curiosity landing on Mars? Well, Stephen has to go cover the story, no matter where that leads him. I'm not sure where he is now, but I do know that Jon Stewart is heading to Tampa Bay so I expect Stephen Colbert will probably hop on a plane or a bus or a motorcycle and make his way there also.
Any why? you might ask. Go ahead, ask. Because the GOP is going there for the RNC. That's right, the Grand Old Party is going to the Republican National Convention. Everyone will be there, including about 15,000 credentialed media. That most certainly should include Stephen Colbert. What would a political convention be like without him? (Bor-ing)
So watch repeats this week in anticipation of the greatest conservative in the country wowing us next week with his coverage of all things Republican. I can hardly wait.

Confusing and Disorienting, But Smooth
It's day two of the StePhest Colbchella 012 Rocktaugustfest and tonight's guest was Grizzly Bear. Stephen started out on stage waving a large American Flag and only gave it up in order to enjoy a cold, refreshing Pepsi. Thank- you Corporate Sponsor! "I cannot believe how much money we got from them," Stephen told us. Obviously, it must be a lot. I don't think battleships come cheap.
Friend of the show, Stephen Colbert was again up on the bridge of the USS Intrepid and Stephen waved to Stephen who waved back. Up on the bridge, in the exact replica of the studio, Stephen got right into politics. No doubt you've heard that Mitt Romney has chosen Paul Ryan as his running mate. Stephen wondered why and offered some ideas. Big question on his mind was if they are ready for the international stage. GOP pinata Tim Pawlenty suggested that they are ready. Mitt Romney has traveled to other countries a lot. If that doesn't count as foreign relations, I don't know what does.
More stuff, but I just have to get right to the interview and music. Stephen ran through the ship, slowly, and had to fight off a group of camera hogs blocking the stairwell. Luckily there was a fire extinguisher handy and that really got them moving. Stephen did make his way to a Life Boat where the four members of Grizzly Bear were sitting calmly, quietly, waiting for Stephen. Only after Stephen hopped on board did the life boat begin to rock dangerously during the whole interview. He apologized, as if that would help.
Anyway, Grizzly Bear, what kind of music do they play? According to the tastiest member, Ed Droste, their music is like the life boat, confusing and disorienting, but smooth. Yes it is and has a jazzy quality. The guys got a very harmonious Colbert Bump for the Grizzly Bear and we were treated to a song. And good news -- more songs are over at Colbert Nation. Enjoy!
Note: I apologize for having the wrong link to Grizzly Bear at the beginning of the post. That goes to the actual bear type of Grizzly Bear, so not who Stephen would have on his show. Again, apologies and I hope no one was offended or scared.

Four More Pegs Before We Sink
Well, now I just feel foolish. I had assumed the USS Intrepid would be on The Colbert Report. Apparently, The Colbert Report was on the USS Intrepid. I really misunderstood that whole situation. I will have to pay closer attention to what Stephen says from now on.
So, Stephen dressed up in his finest Admiral uniform for the Stephest Colbchella '012 Rocktaugustfest aboard the USS Intrepid on the Hudson River in New York and enjoyed a refreshing sip from his excited bottle of Pepsi. His second in command was there, Grandmaster Flash and what looked like a deck full of eager young fans. Wouldn't you just know it. As soon as the fun started, Jon Stewart interrupted so that he and Stephen could continue with their game of Battleship. Jon scored a hit on Stephen which is a little bit disconcerting if you are on the actual battleship at the time.
Surprising to me and maybe everyone else was the fact that Stephen at the helm waved up at Stephen on the bridge. How can he be in two places at once? And yet, there he was, up on the bridge, which was made up to be an exact replica of The Colbert Report studio.
Mitt Romney made an important announcement on Saturday morning. It looked like he was on the USS Intrepid, but, probably just another boat. Anyway, he announced that Paul Ryan would be the next president of the United States. This was a great relief to Stephen. He could relax knowing all the hoopla about Mitt Romney for President was just that, hoopla. Drat. It was a mistake by Romney. He meant to announce that Paul Ryan would be the next Vice President of the United States. Oh, well. At least it was a bold choice of another white, Christian, male candidate.
The guest tonight was Fun. I know what you are thinking, every guest is fun. But tonight, it was Fun. not fun! Either you know or you don't. Stephen ran all through the ship to get to them. Eventually he caught up to the three guys on a bunk bed. Tired by all his running, Stephen reclined in the bottom bunk and conducted the interview from there.
Sometimes interview questions are boring, but not so with Fun. Stephen asked great questions. And then he asked more questions. After a quick commercial break, more fun with Fun. They performed "Some Nights" for the whole shipload of fans.
For bonus songs go to Colbert Nation. Some lucky fans were in the right place at the right time and got to see just what a T Mobile "good-night" looks like.

E=mc Scared
Congress is getting dumber. Ahhhhh. What does that mean? It just means that the speeches they deliver now are geared towards a 10th grade audience rather than the previous 11th grade audience. Personally I think that Congress is just trying to be more inclusive and get younger people interested in all the wonderful things that Congress has accomplished these past few years.
The Word for Monday's show was Sink Or Swim. (Technically Word Word Word.) The seas are rising and are anticipated to rise a meter, which is a metric measurement and so we may not have to worry about it here in the mathematically progressive USA. However, that's quite a bit of water. If you have ocean-front property, you may be in trouble. Luckily, North Carolina Republicans have come up with a sweet solution. They simply want to outlaw the data. That's right, they have a new bill that would outlaw the climate models. (Sea, no evil.) This is a brilliant solution. Another would be to stick your head in the sand. Of course, you would want to have a friend nearby to tell you when the water is rising and getting too close to you.
BKAD, or Better Know a District, is one of Stephen's most patriotic segments of the show. By now he should have been able to breeze through all the Districts. Sadly, there are way too many that we don't know. In fact, there are whole states that we know absolutely nothing about. Stephen is of course fixing that. He made an agreement with Nancy Pelosi to support her Disclose Act. She, in return, would encourage Democratic Representatives to come on The Colbert Report to be interviewed by Stephen. It is proven fact that anyone on The Colbert Report gets the famous Colbert Bump.
So anyway, Stephen has two Democrats booked for this summer. Yea!!! But he needs more. That's where you come in. Head over to Colbert Nation. Do you see Stephen's smiling face up in the right hand corner? It says Better Know A District. Click on that. It's the Represent-O-Map 6000. Then click on your Congressional District. If you don't know your District, use the Search Box-Thingy 4500 below the map of the USA. Either click or search and you will get a nice photo of your Representative and a form email (the best kind) to send. Get your Representative on the show. Make him or her famous. Send your Representative an actual email. You can also view The Archives to see if your Representative was already better known.
The most popular Representative seems to be Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton which is interesting. As popular as she is, she has the worst voting record, having never cast a vote. It is a fascinating interview and valuable civics lesson. And we can see Stephen flatter himself.
To remind us all of what BKAD is all about, Stephen interviewed Representative John Lewis for BKAD and also as the guest. Representative John Lewis is from Georgia's 5th District. John Lewis knew the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr since he was 18 and John Lewis was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. In 1965, he led marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in a historical event that came to be known as Bloody Sunday. Stephen mentioned that he also was at the 1963 March on Washington and may have been the youngest attendee since he was with his mother in that she was pregnant with him.
Stephen and Representative Lewis also discussed the new book that John Lewis has written - "Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change." You can get this book at most bookstores or download it from iTunes.

Changes
I just checked over at Colbert Nation and was surprised to see that James Cameron is the Upcoming Guest for tonight. I'm surprised because I had checked earlier this week and thought it was going to be Ben Rattray talking about Change.org.
I imagine there's a good reason for the change in guests. Perhaps someone started a petition to get a different guest. Perhaps someone got sick or was suddenly unavailable. It could be that with the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic coming up this Sunday, James Cameron was a more logical guest and they just did some reshuffling. I know James Cameron was recently on vacation. I think he was diving, or something like that. He must be a good swimmer.
Regardless, I'm sure it will be an interesting show tonight. Looking forward to it. Most likely Stephen will have Ben Rattray on some other time soon.

The Black Keys
I noticed last night that Stephen seems to be using one of his own "The Colbert Report: Logo Light Up Pen" on the show. Go on over to Colbert Nation to buy one for yourself.
Back to the important stuff. Iran seems to have captured on of our drones and it seems like Stephen Colbert is just the person to get it back for us. He presented a very convincing argument.
Donald Trump will host the next (and probably not the last) Republican debate on December 27. Then he will let the whole world know who he endorses.I can hardly wait. Many people have weighed in with their response to this news from The Donald.
Ari Fleischer: "invitation to a circus"
Karl Rove: "I think the Republican National Chairman ought to step in and say we strongly discourage every candidate from appearing."
Mark McKinnon: "this Trump debate is proof the inmates have taken over the asylum"
Apparently, however, Mitt Romney is not going to attend the debate. I wonder if that will make it harder for him to get the "The Donald Endorsement."
In response to all of this, Stephen Colbert is planning the South Carolina Serious, Classy Republican Debate. It will be sometime in January on the Animal Planet.
The Black Keys were on tonight. They are much quieter and more reserved when they are talking than when they are singing. Go to Colbert Nation to watch last night's show and hear them. Also, there's a bonus song on the web, so always a good reason to go to Colbert Nation.

An Eye For an iPod
I am not unattractive.
No, I'm not talking about myself. And I'm not just giving more examples of double negatives like I did in yesterday's post. Actually, this is what Senator Lori Klein said when talking about her relationship with Herman Cain. Stephen had similar words to say about himself when he claimed, "I am not unhandsome." He also mentioned about Herman Cain canceling his appearance on The Colbert Report not once, but twice!
Copyright Infringement - Stephen had a back and forth discussion with Danny Goldberg, President of gold Village Entertainment and Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Internet Law, Harvard Law School. It's not good to copy stuff on the internet, mmm okay? That is the issue the three of them discussed briefly. In other words, they did not discuss it at length, they discussed in at short-th. It's a discussion that will be ongoing I am sure. On the one hand, thousands, millions, perhaps even billions of dollars are lost in the US due to copyright infringement or downright piracy of intellectual property. But on the other hand, do we really want to throw someone like Justin Bieber in jail because he started out singing his favorite songs on YouTube? I didn't think so.
And just so that we keep the presidential race in mind, Stephen talked briefly about Mitt Romney and Bret Baier. Stephen does not like the hard questions Bret asked of Mitt.
Friend of the show Richard Branson, I mean Sir Richard Branson was on tonight. I think he must have seen the trouble that Brian Williams had with fire alarms recently because he brought a fire extinguisher with him. That seemed strange. Sir Richard Branson is an interesting person. For one thing, he has lots of money, so he most assuredly is in the 1%, and yet he seems to think and act like someone in the 99%. Go read about him over at Wikipedia. Read about his activism. Read about the Elders.
Tonight Sir Richard Branson was on to promote his new book, "Screw Business As Usual." You may remember when Sir Richard was on the show one other time that there was a bit of a water fight between host and guest. Well that did not happen tonight. I would send a warning to everyone, but especially the young folks. Kids, do not do this at home. (Go over to Colbert Nation and watch the episode live to see what I am talking about.)

Food or Soap
So, I've been thinking about Thursday's show. Of course Coldplay was on and so if you didn't watch The Colbert Report then, go watch it online, you know, at Colbert Nation. If you did watch, you learned that since Coldplay has 7 Grammys and Stephen has 1 Grammy, they each have an average of 4 Grammys. Way to go Stephen Colbert!
Then there was the Tip of the Hat Wag of the Finger. You decide which was the tip and which the hat. It seems that Tea Party Nation, a For Profit grass roots group, emailed all 30,000 of its members asking them to take the following pledge:
"I, an American small business owner, part of the class that produces the vast majority of real, wealth producing jobs in the country, hereby resolve that I will not hire a single person until this war against business and my country is stopped."
October 18, 2011
Well, isn't that special? It kind of reminds me of the logic of that bumper sticker you often see around town: The beatings will continue until morale improves.
Yeah, wait - no, that doesn't make sense. If you choose to stagnate your own business, well, that's kind of stupid, isn't it? How can you expect anything to improve? Oh, maybe that's the plan. Run everything into the ground and then point to it and say look how bad it is.
Stephen expressed it best when he said, "Something must be done. That something ... nothing."
And then Bill O'Reilly, Papa Bear as he is known, has a new book out, "Pinheads and Patriots." I don't know much about football teams and at first I mistakenly thought it was a sports book. But never mind about that. It seems there's a deal to send his book over to the troops serving in Afghanistan. And it seems like some got burned. And someone posted a photo of it with this comment:
"Some jerk sent us two boxes of this awful book instead of anything soldiers at a remote outpost in Afghanistan might need, like, say food or soap."
Well, there you go. The very people who are over fighting for our Constitutional Right to Free Speech practiced that very same Free Speech over in Afghanistan. Yea for those brave Patriots saying what they think. Bill O'Reilly must be very proud of them.

Nothing Up My Sleeve
Stephen started the show by demonstrating his creative genius for finding answers. Then he endorsed Herman Cain, or was he joking?
I'll explain. Herman Cain recently said that as president he would build a 20 foot high fence along the Mexican border and he would electrify it. (Most likely he is trying to have a better fence than what Michele Bachmann has planned.) Ah, but then he explained he was joking. No wait, then he said it might be a good idea and he hasn't really given up on that idea. So, depending on whether you like his ideas or not, he is joking or else he's not joking. This is true, I'm not joking about it.
And then in what can only be called some sort of horrifying Halloween scare tactic, Stephen told us that there's talk of limiting potatoes in school lunches. He explained, in great detail, why this would be bad, especially for young middle school boys who have only Tater Tots to sustain them, not just nutritionally but also emotionally.
In other food related news, we learned that Yum oops I mean Yum! Brands is applying for inclusion in the Food Stamp program. Currently, food stamps are only supposed to be used to buy food at grocery stores and not at fast food restaurants. Stephen weighed in on the issue and most likely he will weigh more after he weighed in on the issue. (Okay. He ate some food from Taco Bell. It's a joke. Or if you don't think it's funny, then it's not a joke.)
Stephen explained that Yum! includes Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silver's and Pizza Hut. But it sort of does and sort of doesn't. You see, in January they put a "For Sale" sign on Long John Silver's and also A&W. And in September they announced that they had agreements to sell them, so right now it's a little bit confusing as to which restaurants are included at Yum!.
My feeling is that the food stamps should continue to be used at grocery stores only. If you let these fast food restaurants accept food stamps, then what would be next? Would all restaurants start accepting food stamps? Letting fast food restaurants accept food stamps for payment is just opening up a can of worms. Yikes, would that be the next thing that people could buy with food stamps?
Stephen's guest was Steven Pinker talking about his book, "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined." He had some statistics which he shared with us. Statistics are always good. Prehistoric tribes killed each other at a rate of about 15%, but today, it's much less than a percentage point. Back in the Middle Ages, you were about 35% more likely to be murdered than you are today! To sum up and tie it all together, Stephen shared with Steven a nice example of irony.
The most exciting part of the show was at the very end. Yes, I know that is usually the saddest because the show is almost over, but there's a good reason. Stephen announced that "Tonight is the 6th year anniversary of The Colbert Report. Hard to believe because it was actually last night."
Whew, I thought I had it wrong on yesterday's post, but it actually was October 17.
Here's the part where you go to Colbert Nation for a great opportunity. Look for the link to Colbert Photo Show for Auction. Click on that for more information. You can bid on photos from The Colbert Report and help out Donors Choose.
And finally, you are probably wondering if Stephen unveiled his newest portrait of himself. And you are probably wondering if he has anything up his sleeve. Well, yes he did and yes he does!

Governor Tinkerbell
You probably know her as Governor Sarah Palin. Or, since she did not finish out her full term as Governor, perhaps it would be spelled Governo. As you may know she was running around the country while others were running for president. She had that big bus and kept showing up where other candidates had debates or announcements. But to make a long story not quite as long,
Governo Palin was recently on the radio with Mark Levin. Here's what he had to say:
"I've just received a statement from Governor Palin ... this is breaking news and she writes, 'After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States. Thank you again for all your support. God bless America, Sarah Palin.' Governor Sarah Palin, how are you my friend?"
And Sarah Palin replies, "How are you , great one? I'm feeling just fine."
What a disappointment, especially for the people who replied to this letter by sending cash:
"Someone must save our nation from this road to European Socialism. Do you think it should be Governor Palin? If so, you can send your best one-time gift to SarahPAC today to ... show her that we support her if she decides to run."
Yes, disappointed, and yet, it never suggests that she would run. It never says the money would be used for getting out her message to the masses. It says a one-time gift, so it's kind of like she is having a birthday party and wants you to come and bring a present, but forget the part about going to a party and just send the presents.
Stephen apologized to Ham Rove and had a nice tribute to Steve Jobs. Any time that Stephen would beg for an iPhone or iPad, he would always get what he wanted. The guest tonight was Jason Amerine, Lieutenant Colonel, Special Forces. He was one of the first to go into Afghanistan 10 years ago.
It would be worth your time to go over to Colbert Nation and watch the show there to see the apology, the tribute and the interview.

Climate Reality Project
http://climaterealityproject.org/the-event/
More about that link in a little bit. Tonight's show was, of course, good. You should really go over to Colbert Nation and watch the full episode online. I can't do it justice unless I would just print a full transcript of the program. But that won't do it justice either because you wouldn't see facial expressions and all the graphics and video footage on the show.
So here's just a little bit about tonight's show. Stephen apparently agrees with me that Tim Pawlenty is pinning his hopes on being Mitt Romney's running mate. Stephen even showed the two of them walking together somewhere and yes, Pawlenty looks like he's just been invited to the prom.
Paul Krugman was on for a short interview and Stephen had to remind him that children might be watching the show. And when it started to get a little bit politically incorrect (at least in Stephen's imagination), Krugman said "Steve Jobs is Esther Williams."
Bobby Jindal has endorsed Rick Parry, which makes perfect sense because big old Texas is right next to little old Louisiana and we all know Rick Parry has 234 notches on his belt.
Poor Ron Paul, waiting for some kind of endorsement, finally got one and Stephen showed the video of that endorsement.
And then the special guest for the night was Al Gore. They talked about global warming. And although Stephen thinks there's no proof, Gore stated that 97% to 98% of the scientists around the world working in all the various fields related to climate agree that yes it is a problem and we should be fixing it.
Also, if you watch online, you can hear Stephen ask "Al Gore", after a comment Al Gore made about Stephen, "What the heck are you talking about, sir?"
And so the link to Climate Reality Project. Visit soon and watch.
Note: Stephen did not actually say heck.

Salvatore Purpura
Goodbye Stephen Colbert. Hello Rick Parry.
No, Rick Parry is not taking over The Colbert Report. Didn't mean to scare you. Sorry.
Salvatore A. Purpura had been the Treasurer for the Colbert Super PAC. He quit (resigned) that job. Then, and who could have seen this coming (?), he took the job of Treasurer for Texas Governor and Presidential Hopeful Rick Parry. Stephen explained all about it and you can also read about it over at Politico.
(Warning, you might get sidetracked, like I did, and read a story that is not about Stephen Colbert. It sounded, well, weird.)
Stephen also had a short bit about Rick Santorum talking about marriage. Rick Santorum was comparing marriage to paper napkins and paper towels. He said you can call it what you want, but you can't define a paper towel as a paper napkin or vice versa. And Stephen was correct to note that Santorum would fully understand that you can't just up and redefine a word to mean something else. Who does that sort of thing?
The interview guest tonight was Jeff Bridges. I was going to say actor Jeff Bridges, but tonight he was singer Jeff Bridges. He sang quite nicely, looked very comfortable and at ease singing and playing the guitar. I'm often surprised when an actor sings or a singer acts, and yet I shouldn't be. With so many people trying to make a career in the entertainment industry, it just makes sense that the people who can sing AND act would be more likely to have a career in the performing arts.
And yes, you can go over to Colbert Nation and hear Jeff Bridges sing.

Ric Ocasek
I was so tired tonight, but I still managed to stay awake to watch tonight's show with Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Here's what I remember, but just a word to the wise. I may have nodded off during the show a little bit so I recommend that you watch over at the Colbert Nation so that you don't miss any important segments.
So, here's what tonight's show was about.
A part-time weather balloon landed in the ocean and because of the horrible heat index, it sunk to the bottom of the ocean. A talking sponge tied the balloon to a pineapple and filled the pineapple with aquarium gravel so that it wouldn't inflate and take off again and get it's head in the clouds.
No, that doesn't sound right. Maybe you should go watch over at Colbert Nation. Ric Ocasek and The Cars perform 1.14 songs. How can that be? Well, you need to see the second song online, thus my nagging for you to go to Colbert Nation.
It's also a good idea so that you can hear about The Word and watch Stephen's hands when he makes them "Move Like This." Find out what data retrieval is like for Stephen as he realizes that if something is online, he's not likely to remember it.
So, here's what tonight's show was about.

What's With the Teeth?
There was a lot on the show tonight and I can't possibly comment on all of it. Well, yes I could, but that would take up too much space on the Internet, so I'll limit my comments.
Stephen talked about fellow media personality Don Lemon. In fact, he went over to CNN and interrupted Don Lemon while he was reporting on the air. Too often the media let a story slide. They don't investigate the background. They don't ask the hard questions. Oh, by the way, Don Lemon has a new book out, "Transparent." Stephen was confrontational with Lemon, but not overly so. Sometimes I guess an expert like Stephen just has to tell the newbies how to do the news the right way. Maybe that's not exactly accurate. Don Lemon does have quite a few accomplishments to his name. Let's just say Stephen gave some friendly advice to Don Lemon.
Dan Rather, on the other hand is not afraid to ask the tough questions. Tonight he asked, "What's with the teeth?"
A rising problem we have here in the good old USA and in the world in general is the shrinking helium supply. Oh, well, you think. We can do without helium balloons. Well think again. Read about this problem at Scientific American.
If you really want to have a good laugh, watch tonight's episode over at Colbert Nation. You can see Stephen wreck a $5,000 toy. But don't worry, it's okay. He practiced doing the very same thing during rehearsal. His guest, Dr. Missy Cummings, Director, Humans and Automation Lab over at MIT, was the guest. She told him that with three minutes of training, anyone could safely operate "the toy". Well, almost anyone.

Now You've Done It
Stephen has assigned his faithful Colbert Nation followers to go down to NBC's The Today Show and rally for his favorite part of our anatomy. I am so glad I did not spend all my vacation money on a trip to New York City this week. I most likely would have stood in front of The Today Show window in hopes of appearing on TV, if only for a second or two, and you just know they will have to keep the curtains closed for the entire show.
But they can't just ignore the crowds outside on Friday. Cee Lo Green will be performing for the fans. Stephen, what have you gone and done this time? How many signs are being made even as I write this?
Stephen's guest was David Eagleman and Stephen's guest book was "Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain." I wonder how many politicians and celebrities will be photoshopped reading that book. Considering all the talk about her migraines, I'm betting at least one of those images will be of Michele Bachmann.

866-896-1811
Yet another public service I'm providing to those who wonder who called them. It showed up as Toll Free 866-896-1811. The woman stated that she was a professional fund raiser calling for Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation. I asked if there was a website and she said yes, but she had the website wrong. I did find the right website by Googling, but it would have been more impressive if she had known more about the organization.
I also found a charity rating for them on Charity Navigator. They had a 1 star rating (29.84) out of a possible 4 star rating system, so judge for yourself.
And if you have some spare time and want to look at some Top Ten Lists, Charity Navigator has some of those also.
However, if you don't want to do any homework but just are feeling charitable, you can always give to the American Red Cross. It's right there on www.colbertnation.com, so you know Stephen has given the American Red Cross the famous Colbert Bump.
