Sunshine and Sailboats; Smelly and Slimy and Stinky - Shocking!

Thursday's show was pretty darn good. I think that may have been because I ate a whole carton of Americone Dream while I watched it. If you have never tasted that scrumptious flavor of ice cream, you are in for a treat. Just head over to the local grocery store and buy yourself a carton of Americone Dream. Americone Dream - it's what's for dinner. Oh, and Stephen's Americone Dream was featured prominently on Breaking Bad! So, that's good.

Crossfire, all new, returns to TV on CNN. Better than that, though, is Stephen's version of Pointless Counter Pointless with --- I'm thinking liberal and conservative pundits --- Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. I'm not sure which one is the liberal and which one is the conservative, but I'm pretty sure neither one was a tea drinker.

Now, some people may think Big Bird and Oscar are not up to the difficult questions Stephen typically throws out at any of his guests. But Big Bird was ready when Stephen tried to get the feathers flying.

"The whole idea of the show is disagreement. Okay? I need you to argue."

"No," said Big Bird.

"What? You won't do that?"

"I'm sorry, I thought you wanted me to argue with you." So, Big Bird is man enough to stand up to Stephen by being disagreeable about arguing. It's beyond circular logic, it's spherical logic.

And it eventually caused Stephen to come unglued. "I don't want to calm down. This is the worst debate show ever." Then he sunk down behind his desk to hide and cry. Poor Stephen.

Science fiction, fantasy, fables and fairy tales are very popular genres for literature, even for children's literature. And now for something completely different. Rush Limbaugh, Mike Huckabee, and Callista Gingrich, have all written children's books. Of course we all know how much children like make-believe. Stephen just had to jump in to this sweet pot of kiddy lit and write a series of historical fiction books. "Stephen-tsy Ross Sews the Flag of History." Unlike some of the other books that featured a elephant or a horse as the sidekick, Stephen has the most patriotic sidekick, an eagle named Tax Cut. Yesterday I went down to my local Barnes & Noble and bought the whole series of Stephen's books. I can tell you they are going to end up on the best seller list. They are just that good. Who doesn't love a little bit of fantasy now and then?

It sure seemed like Animal Night for Stephen. Big Birds, Grouches, elephants, horses and eagles. Even the guest was all about an animal. SHARK. Wait wait wait! I didn't mean there is a shark coming to get you. No, calm down. The guest was Chris Fischer and he is promoting sharks. Before you get all hot and bothered like Stephen did, realize this. Every day about 200,000 sharks are killed by people. Every year about 2 people are killed by sharks.

They had a lively discussion. But enough about that. Go to the website Ocearch.org and read about sharks. They are not cute like pandas, but they are important, very important. If we lose them, we lose the ocean. And we need the ocean. Ocearch is about Ocean Research. What is happening to the sharks? You can read about that here.

So stop reading my blog and go over to Ocearch now. And did I mention that you can track sharks at the Shark Tracker? It's right up there in the top right corner of the Ocearch website. Right now, April seems to be over near East Hampton.

Americone Dream in Florida

While we are all waiting for June, the month for weddings and Supreme Court rulings to be handed down, we got a glimpse into what Sue Everhart, Georgia GOP Chairwoman, is thinking on the matter of marriage equality. Stehpen had one of her quotes from April 1 of this year. "Lord, I'm going to get in trouble over this, but it is not natural for two women or two men to be married... If it was natural, they would have the equipment to have a sexual relationship." Actually, she thinks this whole current situation is all about heterosexuals getting free health care and therefore committing fraud.

We found out that Austin, Texas is on North Korea's list, probably because of the SXSW Music Festival. The reason is that SXSW has become too commercial. Stephen had Victor Cha, author of "The Impossible State: North Korea, Past and Future," on to discuss briefly what's going on over in North Korea. It was interesting and somewhat confusing. Hopefully he won't come back on to update Stephen.

Amazingly enough, while doing a segment on Florida laws, Stephen cleverly put in a visual plug for Ben & Jerry's Americone Dream Ice Cream. Some might think he was pointing out the futility of trying to come up with a law that neglects to consider the shoes we all wear each and every day, but I'm pretty sure it was all just a ploy to get us all to go buy some more of his namesake ice cream treat. I know it sure made me hungry for some munchies.

Stephen's guest was the Governor of New Jersey. No not that Governor, this former Governor. Jim McGreevey was a Governor of New Jersey a few years before Chris Christie. Stephen called him Gov Jim. The former Governor currently is working with female women in jail, counseling them and helping them put there lives back on track. He said that about 70% of them are there because of drugs.. They work on a spiritual level, which includes Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. Jim McGreevey said that in many ways the women are as good as what Jesus meant for us to be. And what Stephen heard him say was that Jesus was a criminal, Jesus was an addict. I guess that good ear of Stephen's is not quite healed yet.

Do Not Do It

After talking basketball and power saws, Stephen turned his attention to Valentine's Day or as he calls it:

Stephen Colbert's "Americone Dream Free from 5pm to 8pm at Participating Ben and Jerry's Scoop Shops Nationwide" Day. Oh, I hope I got the name of that right.

Apology: I did not see Ben and Jerry on The Colbert Report tonight. Perhaps Dylan Rattigan meant Stephen would talk about ice cream and that Ben and Jerry would not actually be on the show. So, if you were expecting to see Ben and Jerry, I do apologize. Maybe tomorrow night, but no more promises.

Anyway, Stephen sent Jimmy Fallon, his Eternal Enemy for Six Months, a really sweet Valentine's Day card. "My dearest Jimmiest," and it went on and on from there. Stephen sent it via Late Night Mail system which is a cute white bunny wearing a mail bag. One can only wonder what will happen when Jimmy gets the card. They are supposed to be Eternal Enemies until March 3rd.

Stephen's guest tonight was environmentalist Bill McKibben. He has led the effort to kill the Keystone Pipeline. He talked about oil and how profit in one of the things that keeps us drilling for more oil and using it when we could be using cleaner fuels. Stephen reminded him that the planet still turns. The interview was short, so you can go to Bill McKibben's website for more information and see photos from the enormous 350 EARTH project, or go to 350.org and be astounded by the photo of Stephen Colbert with the caption: Colbert Viewers: Go Straight to the Petition!

And yet Stephen told us very sternly, "Do Not Do It!" But I kind of think he really does want us to do it or why would his photo, his smiling photo, be right there on the website?

This is important. Go to 350.org and click on the photo of Stephen and sign the petition. What's at stake? Drinking water for millions of Americans across the Midwest. And more, much more.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween. Here's my photo of a bunch of apples dressed up as pumpkins!

If you have nothing better to do today, I have a few ideas. Go look at Google for today's Google Doodle. You can read a little bit about how it was accomplished at the Los Angeles Times. (Watch for a cameo appearance by Pegman and other celebrities when you click on the Google Doodle.)

Next, Friends of the Show Ben and Jerry have a fun little interactive Halloween theme at their website. You can spend a lot of time mousing around there. It seems quite kid-friendly, too. You can even find some safety tips from the Red Cross if you click on the right link. Check out all the "entries" at the Flavor Graveyard. Let's hope Americone Dream never ends up there.

Capital Letter Equity

I want to say something about the show on Thursday and yet I have some qualms. Jimmy Fallon showed up, as did Jon Stewart. Jimmy Fallon now has a Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream named after him. So, hurray for Jimmy. But, well, will this mean that people will cross over to the Fallon side and thus leave Stephen behind?

I sincerely hope not. Best thing would be for people to continue to eat the Stephen Colbert Americone Dream (Vanilla Ice Cream with Fudge Covered Waffle Cone Pieces & a Caramel Swirl) as much as always and then have the Jimmy Fallon Late Night Snack (Vanilla Bean Ice Cream with a Salty Caramel Swirl & Fudge Covered Potato Chip Clusters) as a dessert after eating the Americone Dream Ice Cream.

I tossed and turned all weekend wondering whether or not to even mention Jimmy Fallon. But I am also a fan of Jimmy, so how could it possibly be wrong?

Okay, I'll tell you how it could be wrong. If you go to Ben & Jerry's website, you will find that a cow supposedly loves both flavors. You can even click on the cow's pink conversation bubble to watch Stephen, Jimmy and Bessy on The Colbert Report. That's fine.

But.

Click on the Flavors, and then click on Our Flavors and breeze through the seven pages of flavors. On page 2 you will find Late Night Snack (2nd row, container 3). Click on it and read the description. And then on page 3 you can find Americone Dream (2nd row, first container). Click and read about that. Now go to page 5 (bottom row, first container). There's Late Night Snack again. Click and read about that flavor again. Then go to page 6 (first row, 3rd container) to read about Americone Dream. Click and read.

Okay, that's a lot of clicking and reading. But here's my beef. Jimmy Fallon's flavors are on pages 2 and 5. Stephen Colbert's flavors are on pages 3 and 6. Why are Jimmy's flavors featured before Stephen's flavors? And here's the real kicker. On page 6, the description of Americone Dream has only one Capital Letter at the Beginning of the Sentence! That's just not fair. Both of the descriptions about Jimmy's ice creams have capital letters all over the place. Why does Stephen have only one description that is bathed in capital letters?

I know this is a lot to digest, but it just hurts so much.

Please Ben and Jerry, fix the description so that there is Capital Letter Equity for Stephen Colbert.

Note: I just updated this post with the website link for Ben and Jerry. Sorry I waited until March 10 to do so.

Eat Up America

Where were you four years ago tonight? Do you remember? Well, you should. That was the night that Stephen Colbert first introduced Ben & Jerry's newest flavor in honor of Stephen. Yep, Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream.

Yummy.

Starting February 15, it will now be available at Ben and Jerry Scoop Shops everywhere.

And for one day only on February 15, you can get 2 scoops for the price of 1. Dream on, America.

And for the next year, all of Stephen's proceeds from Americone Dream will go to the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

So, get off that couch and go buy some ice cream. It will taste delicious and you will be helping a great cause. Plus it will make Stephen feel good because he looks charitable and he doesn't even have to spend money to look so generous.
