Stephen reported on the latest poll numbers tonight. Here is the voter favorable opinion poll from 1/17/12:
Stephen Colbert 36%
Mitt Romney 35%
Rick Santorum 30%
Ron Paul 27%
Newt Gingrich 26%
Did you see that? Colbert is at the top of all of them! And he's not even on the South Carolina ballot. I don't even want to know why the numbers don't add up to 100%. All that matters is that Stephen is ahead of all of them.
But then there was a complete surprise. Stephen attended a Town Hall Meeting sponsored by cafemom recently that was moderated by friend of the show, Frank Luntz. (Disclaimer: Stephen stated that he was not actually there, but there was a TV and a 2 minute video of him was shown.) He did not get the approval he was looking for, in fact, one "Mom" called him a Charleston Dandy. Not to worry, Stephen, just remember that 36% number.
Tonight was special because we got to see one of Jon Stewart's ads for Stephen Colbert. Stephen reminded South Carolina voters to vote for Herman Cain in Saturday's primary. And then, just like frosting on a cake, Stephen announced what is surely to be the biggest event this year in South Carolina.
Rock Me Like A
Herman Cain
South Cain-olina
Primary Rally
With Special Guest Herman Cain. The rally will be this Friday at 1:00 p.m (gates open at noon). The event will be held at The Cistern Yard at the College of Charleston at George Street. There will be speeches, cheerleaders, marching band, gospel choir, and of course Stephen Colbert and Herman Cain. I won't be able to be there, so I think I will watch the webcam. What do you think are the chances that the website will get so much traffic that it will be unavailable? I'd put it at 36%.
Stephen talked a bit about SOPA and PIPA and then chatted with fellow conservative David Frum of Daily Beast and Newsweek fame. In November David Frum thought the GOP had lost touch with reality, but now, two months later, he's more hopeful and thinks Romney is the man for the job (POTUS).
Stephen expressed his curiosity on just which Mitt Romney he was talking about. Stephen also wonders how Romney could get the support of the Tea Party since, as a Mormon, Romney can neither drink tea nor party. When Stephen asked if the other candidates should drop out in the event that Romney wins the South Carolina Primary, Frum would not answer that question but instead replied, "I would like to see this over as soon a possible."
Remember to go to the Rally on Friday and remember to vote for "Herman Cain" in the South Carolina Primary on Saturday, January 21.

Frank to the Rescue
Poor Michele Bachmann. Everyone picks on her. She can't get a break anywhere. Oh, woe is her. Woe is her.
ABC
There was this trouble a while ago with ABC. "We didn't have time for any questions."
CBS
Then this. "He is a piece of ____ . He is a fraud and he should be fired."
NBC
And most recently this. "... likely they could have fired the drummer, "
There are obviously some people who are not with the program, so to speak. Everyone is supposed to be supporting Michele Bachmann. No one is supposed to say anything negative. Is it because she is a woman? It's time we let women out of the kitchen. No longer should they be content with the jobs of yesteryear: nurse, teacher and waitress.
OOPS! She just made herself into a waitress. Yikes. Granted she was able to take up nearly a minute of time with the focus all on her.
Dr. Frank Luntz, friend of the show, came through with the perfect words to move the debate along. After all, he is somewhat of a wordsmith. He made Michele Bachmann think that she was going to speak first and that got her to sit down right away. He is so smart. No wonder Stephen has him on the show so often.

What is a Focus Group?
And what does it have to do with a "Chopper Pad?"
First off, a Focus Group. Those are the people that sit in the large room on chairs in rows in front of the one-way mirror. Is that the right term? No problem, I'll look it up in Wikipedia where all things are true. What? "A one-way mirror, also known as a two-way mirror, one-way glass, or two-way glass..." That could confuse some people. How can all those things refer to the same thing? Oh, never mind.
The important thing is that all those people sit there and answer questions that Dr. Luntz asks while Stephen sits behind the one-way/two-way mirror/glass and eats popcorn and drinks pop. From all the answers from all the people in the Focus Group, three things emerge.
1. Corporations are human.
2. Corporations are people - Will they be Chinese people or American people?
3. People are corporations.
Good, this will help Stephen and Dr. Luntz make a commercial for the Colbert SuperPAC that shows that Corporations are people. Of course, they should have the same rights as all people, the right to free speech, the right to bear arms and the right to get married, not gay married, but married. At least that is what Stephen wants Dr. Luntz to know.
Perhaps this would be a good time for me to inform people (and corporations too, I guess) that Dr. Luntz seems to sometimes be exasperated with Stephen. Maybe that's too strong of a word, but still, he must be getting paid well enough that it makes it worth his while. Maybe it's just that Stephen is a conservative and Dr. Luntz doesn't share his values. It's hard to figure.
Stephen had a presidential contender on his show tonight. And I don't mean that he interviewed himself. It was Jon Huntsman, former governor of the state of Utah. It was a short interview, as most of the interviews tend to be, but they covered a lot of ground. Jon Huntsman has worked for Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43 and Obama. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, which is good considering he was Obama's Ambassador to China. I'm not sure if the speaking of Mandarin Chinese came first or if being Ambassador was first, but the one helps make the other possible and vice versa.
Tonight I really wished that I knew Mandarin Chinese. Jon Huntsman said a sentence or two in Mandarin Chinese. Since Stephen does not speak Mandarin Chinese, Jon Huntsman repeated it in English. He was looking for Stephen to possibly be his vice presidential running mate. Hey, if it was good enough for Sarah Palin, it certainly should be just fine for Stephen Colbert. But there's always that chance that it was just a joke and the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Stephen probably does not have a good chance of being a vice presidential candidate this coming election.
Well, when all was said and done, Stephen said something that surprised me. Even after informing us that Huntsman is considered by some to be a moderate, Stephen was ready to give him the Colbert Bump. Huntsman has been polling at 2%, but Stephen promised to get him all the way up to whole milk.
* Chopper Pad is an endearing name Stephen used to refer to Dr. Luntz.

We Will Transform American Politics
Tonight's rerun was from August 16. You can see my post from then - Brilliant Not Manipulative to see more of what was on tonight. We heard terms such as:
estate tax = death tax
health care reform = government takeover of health care
energy exploration = oil drilling
climate change = global warming
It's amazing what you can do if you just change the words or even letters a bit.
Here's what Stephen got out of obamacare:
O Bam A Car, E!!!
In preparation for the astronauts, he played a clip of NASA's Greatest Moments which included Kirk and Spock, James Bond, Miss Piggy, Michael Jackson doing the Moon Walk, the Jetsons, Tang and the space bar on a computer keyboard.
It will be interesting in the weeks ahead to see how Dr. Frank Luntz helps Stephen learn to be a better communicator.

Brilliant Not Manipulative
Tonight it seemed like the show was an hour long. There was lots of stuff!
So far, 53,000 people have responded and told Stephen what the Colbert Super PAC stands for. And because Stephen believes that Democracy stands for one man, one vote, and one dollar, Stephen had all the results compiled that took into account how much money people had donated. Some of the important things people think the Colbert Super PAC stand for are:
Health
Education
People
Government
Rights
Care
Tax
Stephen needs to incorporate all those ideas into advertisements and so he turned to Dr. Luntz, or Frank, as Stephen called him. If you choose your words correctly, you can influence how people think. For example "energy exploration" not "oil drilling". And "climate change" not "global warming". Stephen was impressed and said it is "brilliant" and not "manipulative."
Frank has a lot of practice using just the right word to get people to think or believe what he wants them to. (Or what Frank's clients want people to believe.) Here's the list of Eleven Words for 2011 that you probably will hear as we head into the 2012 elections:
1. Imagine
2. No excuses
3. I get it
4. If you remember only one thing
5. Uncompromising integrity
6. The simple truth
7. Believe in better
8. Real-time
9. You decide
10. You deserve
11. Let's get to work
Go read the article "The Eleven Words for 2011" to find out which one is all about truthiness! (I did notice that "I am Not a Witch" was NOT one of the Eleven Words.) And someone should tell Frank that "If you remember only one thing" is actually six words, not one word.
Frank told Stephen some important things to do to communicate with the people. Number one is Listen. And then for Stephen's benefit, he repeated it. Number one is Listen. He also told Stephen to focus, but not so much that he looked scary. It didn't take very long before Stephen had mastered how to pretend to look really sincere.
Another important lesson for Stephen to learn is what to do if he makes a really big mistake or does something wrong. (Never mind that Stephen does not make mistakes and that he does not ever do something that is wrong.) The advice from Frank is to say these three things:
1. I'm sorry.
2. I made a mistake.
3. Forgive me.
Dr. Frank Luntz has written books, the latest one being "Win." His parting words to Stephen were:
"You're dangerous."

The guest tonight was actually four people who are just out of this world. Well they were out of this world when the were the crew of the last Space Shuttle mission. That's right, none other than Commander Chris Ferguson, Colonel Doug Hurley, Colonel Rex Walheim, and Dr. Sandra Magnus. With the Space Shuttle program ending, we will have to hitch a ride with Russia if we want to go to outer space. The cost of that is around $63 million! Stephen recommended that they check with Priceline. After all, it's Captain Kirk on those commercials.
So, wow, a really interesting show tonight and you might want to go look at it online over at Colbert Nation. You can see NASA's Greatest Moments which had very little to do with NASA and more to do with science fiction and popular culture. Plus you could find out what gift Stephen received from the astronauts, or should I say "astronuts?"
