Things That Need Major Renovation

Yes of course the shutdown continues, mostly because no one will buy John Boehner a table. So...

Twitter is planning an IPO. Is that like IHOP? I'm not sure, but I do know this. If you want to Tweet, you go to Twitter. If you put your money on Tweeter, you are a Twit.

Stephen talked about his favorite Congresswoman/Piano Teacher Who Sits Too Close To You Michele Bachmann. He is sad because she is not going to run for re-election in 2014. Luckily someone is ready to step into her shoes and fill her void as soon as she is out of there. It's Tom Emmer. Interesting tidbit. He has a commercial which highlights his run for office as well as a business enterprise that will put siding on your house. Wow. Stephen wondered why no one has done this before. Mixing politics and private business and endorsements, and stuff like that in the same commercial. The reason why is going to hit your funny bone. Stephen explained it to us. It's kind of illegal! It was (future?) friend of the show Sally Jo Sorensen that spotted that ad and blogged about it here.

Tom Hanks was Stephen's guest on Wednesday. It's sort of a deja vu week. Is that the right term??? We had a boat guy guest on Monday night (James Spithill) and now Tom Hanks talking about his new boat film, "Captain Phillips." And we had some Minnesota politics with Tom Emmer and the other stars in the "Captain Phillips" film are from Minnesota!

Anyway, Tom Hanks was his usual intelligent, witty self, which is why he's so popular, I guess. The two men had a fascinating discussion about beards and how that can affect the personality of the beard grower. (It takes muscles to grow a beard, by the way.) Stephen asked a simple question halfway through the interview. "You actually shot this..." and Tom Hanks finished the sentence for him, "on film." Not quite what Stephen was fishing for. But they actually shot it on board one of the Maersk ships. We even learned a bit of technical pirate tactics. With the ships loaded with stacks of cargo containers, it is very difficult to get on board. But the pirates in the movie went to Home Depot and bought a ladder. So, apparently, one of the first times that ladder technology was used. Stephen had to resort to 20 questions to get more answers from Tom Hanks, but still a great interview.

So, if you are looking for a movie to go to this weekend, how about "Captain Phillips?"

Extensive Vocabulary

Do you want to get rich? You know, rich like Stephen Colbert? His strategy is to buy Forever Stamps. You buy them today for one price and then when the price goes up, like it is on January 27 of this year, you can still use the stamps that were the cheaper price. That's a good deal. But the idea of stamps going up in price a penny, one whole cent, made Stephen really mad. No more is he going to put a  46 cent stamp on a letter, mail it in Miami for delivery in Seattle. Nope. He will buy an airplane ticket and deliver all his mail himself. Yikes, for me that would have meant traveling to more than ten states to deliver my Christmas cards. Can I get an airplane ticket for less than 50 cents? Hmmm, I wonder.

Leading right from the cost of mailing a letter vs. delivering it yourself via air travel was Stephen's segment about anger. Someone said that getting angry can make you live longer. A better plan is to just take Vasca-Ternity Pills. Sadly, trying to get the bottle open made Stephen, yep, angry. Another way to stat young is to get a blood transfusion from a young person. Enter Jay the Intern, or rather, the Vacsa-Tern. Poor Jay the Intern.

Stephen's guest for January 8 was Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe. We learned that he is a nice football player in that he often gives the football to the other team. Plus he can flex which impressed Stephen somewhat... Most importantly, we found out about the extensive vocabulary that Chris Kluwe has. He mentioned the election from this past November, Minnesotans defeated an attempt to define marriage in their State Constitution. It seems to me that a Dictionary should define marriage and a Constitution should determine how a state is governed.

You're Gonna Make It After All

Stephen started out honoring Michele Bachmann for her unrelenting search for people who are different from her. See more about that in previous post about John McCain.

Speaking of Minnesota, Stephen is getting caught up with Better Know a District. The 67th Installment was the Fighting 5th District in Minnesota, the area that includes Minneapolis. There you can find the Hennepin Avenue Bridge crossing the Mississippi (and the Ippississim), the Walker Art Center, the Spoon Bridge, and the home of Prince. We got to see some typical winter wear for Minnesota cold winters. And Stephen sat down, in a room, with three term Congressman Keith Ellison.

Keith Ellison is a Muslim, in fact, he is the first Muslim elected to Congress. Stephen called him the very first secret Muslim. Congressman Ellison told him he is not a secret Muslim, at which point Stephen said he is the first openly secret Muslim in Congress. He then asked the Congressman to say to his friends, "Stephen's cool." Keith complied and said, "Steve's cool."

The discussion turned to Michele Bachmann and her recent hunt for the aforementioned people who are different than her. "How much infiltration is there?" asked Stephen. "None," replied Congressman Ellison. But then, apparently, Stephen caught him in some sort of weird logic trap. And I only say weird because in college I learned that when something is illogical, you can not use it to prove something logically. But I digress.

"Are you a Muslim?"
"Yes sir."
"Do you have siblings?
"Yes sir."
"So you are literally a Muslim brother."
"I guess."
"I just caught you."

Stephen went on to say that a little witch hunt never hurt anyone, however, the Congressman disagreed. "It hurts a lot of people." He believes it is better to be fair.

So, who is Congressman Keith Ellison supporting for president? He was asked three times and answered each time, "Obama." Stephen tried a different tactic to get him to change his mind. What about if Mitt Romney called Keith Ellison and asked him to be the Vice President candidate? To make it easier for the viewers, Stephen had the two of them act out the phone call between Mitt Romney and Keith Ellison. Stephen played the part of Mitt, and Keith played the part of Keith. Even so, Keith turned Mitt down. That did not seem to register with Stephen/Mitt who seemed to think that the answer had been yes. Truthiness, perhaps?

Anyway, Minneapolis is also home to Mary Tyler Moore. There was a great sing-along of the theme song from the Mary Tyler Moore Show. And then, to conclude the interview, Stephen convinced Keith Ellison to toss a hat up in the air.

It is not easy being interviewed for the Better Know a District segment, but Congressman Ellison did a fairly decent job answering Stephen's questions. I imagine we can be looking for Congresswoman Michele Bachmann to show up soon on the show. Stephen must have so many questions he would like to ask her. I can hardly wait.

Who's honoring him now? Or as Stephen would say, who's honoring me now? Apparently, well he's not really being honored, more like mentioned. But, psychologists in Canada and New Zealand have found truth in truthiness. And, people are more likely to say something was true if there was a decorative picture to go along with a statement. Stephen believed the research. After all, there was a picture of him. He was uncomfortable that science was used to prove this. He would have preferred that truthinessiness proved the truth about truthiness.

Stephen's guest was Woody Harrelson. He has written and directed the off-Broadway play, "Bullet for Adolf." Lest you think he just came on the show to promote this, let me reassure you. He didn't. He just shamelessly sucked up to Stephen and then casually unbuttoned his shirt a bit where we notice  what looks like a huge tattoo for "Bullet for Adolf." Stephen assumed this was the sequel to "The Sound of Music," but no, it is not anything like that show. Stephen doesn't often get gifts from the guests, but Woody Harrelson was kind enough to give him a T-shirt. And it just happened to be a "Bullet For Adolph" shirt. What's the chances of that happening, right?

I Joined Colbert PAC

Stephen was so convincing that I just had to go to COLBERTPAC.com and join.

Now I can claim to be one of a group of millions who are
"Making a better tomorrow, tomorrow."

My whole life has changed since joining. I feel older. I know I'm getting smarter. Every time I see Michele Bachmann or Tim Pawlenty or Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee, I can smile because I know that I am in the PAC that is better than all those PACs put together.

But enough about me. On to the important stuff. Stephen found out last night that you can use PAC money to pay for jet travel. And that you need to comply with rules and fill out forms and things of that nature, but no one has gone to jail for making boo boos about PAC stuff. So, that sounds intriguing.

I mentioned other people who have PACs and I did not know, but huckpac means "out after Iowa" in the Klingon language. Stephen talked about Tim Pawlenty and his thunderous handshake last night. Well, you can do amazing things with audio-visual equipment nowadays. oops. I guess it's called technology now, not AV. You might remember that Stephen has aired the Pawlenty PAC ad and then determined that Pawlenty is running for the Brawny man. You probably haven't seen, but Pawlenty, who is from Minnesota, has all of a sudden developed a deep south accent when he is speaking in states south of Minnesota.

But moving on. I just think someone needs to talk about this Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert BFF situation. (That's Best Friends Forever, if you don't know.) Both of them have talked about being BFFs for 6 months. That's not exactly forever!!!

Regardless of that problem though, go to DonorsChoose.org/Fallon-Colbert-Project anyway and donate. It helps kids, so that's good.

And then hopefully soon we can get past both of them having to say, "I never said that."

TimMAY, P King, Klu and Reza

Lots of guys on last night, either in news segments or in the interview. First to mention, briefly, is Tim Pawlenty, commonly known as T-Paw, the former governor from Minnesota. Stephen aired a commercial by the former gov which sure looks to be by a guy running for president. Although Timmy (TimMAY!) has been saying for years that he's not running (nudge nudge wink wink), he also has been doing everything short of announcing that he's running that does in fact make it look like he is running for president. Although to be fair, some have also theorized that he is really running for vice president or secretary of state or any number of other jobs in Washington D.C.

(On a side issue, look at the photo here back in 2008. Is his hair gray back then?)

Anyway, the commercial was awesome, until you saw the next clip of the real Tim Pawlenty giving the actual speech. Boring.

Stephen had an awesomer commercial for himself and then announced his awesomest Political Action Committee, ColbertPAC.

Also bits about Representative Peter King, who is concerned about Muslim terrorists but was supportive of the IRA. Rep. P. King is holding hearings which have generated controversy.

Another quick mention was of Rep. Dan Lungren with just a short mention he had about investigating Ku Klux Klan and various other groups. My question, and a small question admittedly, is wouldn't you think someone who was investigating that group would be able to pronounce the name correctly? He calls them the Klu (think "clue") Klux Klan, instead of the Ku (think "coo") Klux Klan. Just two simple letters - Ku - not so hard to pronounce correctly.

But then Stephen got to a real live person for the interview, Dr. Reza Aslan. He and Stephen talked about the hearings that P. King is holding. I think many people agree that we should find out what is going on with extremist groups, but focusing on only one group doesn't make sense. Dr. Reza Aslan told Stephen that since 2001, there have been more violent extremist plots against the United States by non-Muslims than by Muslims. And then Stephen took that opportunity to get defensive when Dr. Aslan mentioned Catholics.

Stephen, Stephen, Stephen. Have you forgotten that you gave up Catholicism for Lent?

But it's okay, he's fine. Stephen Colbert had one, two, three good moments at the end of his show.
