Happy Birthday William Shatner

It has been way too long since I have written pearls of wisdom here. But I could not let this day go by without joining pretty much everyone in the world in wishing William Shatner a Very Very Happy Birthday. Enjoy your cake, Bill. You do deserve to eat all of it by yourself.

Next year I will try to get over to your place and bring a present of some kind. Something small, furry, but defintely not a Tribble. No, you don't need that kind of trouble.

Live Long and Prosper.

Do You Know the Way to Santa Fe?

I have been trying since Thursday night to get to Santa Fe. I think I should be able to get there in just three seconds by using the nodules on my fingertips, but I am having no success at all. I finally decided to give up trying and get back to posting here. If anyone figures it out, let me know.

Meanwhile...

Stephen's audience was again quite boisterous. Perhaps Stephen is providing snacks or something to get them so excited. It is refreshing to have such enthusiasm.

You may have watched the Veep Debate, the one with Martha Raddatz and also Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.  Some people are saying that there was a clear political bias in that choice of a moderator. You see, years ago, in 1991, Barack Obama attended the wedding of a classmate. That classmate happened to be marrying Martha Raddatz. She ended up getting divorced, but Stephen pointed out that surely she would still hold a special place in her heart for a classmate of her ex-husband. Right?

None of that is important now. Stephen introduced a new segment: "This Changes Everything." In what can really be called game-changing, we found out from Stephen's relentless search for, I dunno, maybe the truth, that Time Travel is possible. We know this because Andrew Basiago has done it. He has traveled through time. He did so when he was a kid, a young kid. He said that they used "jump rooms" to do the time travel. He also traveled to Mars with Barack Obama. Stephen showed video footage of an expert, Captain James Kirk discussing this. Whoooooosshhhhhh. He explained it very well. I understood it completely. "Priceline.com" Priceline.com." Only William Shatner can make something like this understandable. It's classic. I hope you saw it on the TV machine or go catch it over at Colbert Nation. This Changes Everything. (Full disclosure: Some people are skeptical of these claims of Andrew Basiago. I mean, time travel.... teleportation.... really?... really?)

Political News is almost a certainty with the election so close. Mitt Romney has for two years been a severe Conservative, but now Mitt Romney has moved to the Center. Therefore, it was time for Stephen Colbert to debate Stephen Colbert in, yes you guessed it, Formidable Opponent. First of all, Stephen autographed his new book, "America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't" for Stephen. Shameless plug, yes, but I endorse him for doing so. Somehow, the two of them were able to bring Honey Boo Boo into the debate but then quickly got over to Romney Care and Obama Care and how the two were so similar. Plan probably is for Mitt Romney, if elected, to repeal Obama Care, clone it and replace it with Romney Care. Stephen was confounded and confused by Stephen. So they physically exchanged places. Apparently, Stephen tripped Stephen in the process. It got more confusing and the two of them wondered how Mitt Romney manages all the switching of positions or flip-flops.

The guest was Chrystia Freeland talking about Plutocrats. Interestingly enough, she has a new book out - "Plutocrats, The Rise of the New Global Super Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else." Stephen was upset that he is not one of the super rich. That would be the richest of the richest. If you are reading this, I'm pretty sure you are not in that group either. But, the good news is that would at least put you in the same group as Stephen. Well, anyway, it is a little bit scary what they were talking about. It's a winner take all, ALL!, economy. That may not be be a great way to run things in terms of the collective good.

Stephen was going to remind us all of what Thomas Jefferson said, but, the audience (boisterous) applauded the guest, Chrystia Freeland. This hurt Stephen's feelings and so we never found out what was so important that Thomas Jefferson said.

As a service to all of you reading this now, I looked through some of Thomas Jefferson's quotes to try to determine what Stephen was going to reveal. I do not know, but I can suggest that maybe it was this quote by Thomas Jefferson:

"Experience demands that man is the only animal which devours his own kind, for I can apply no milder term to the general prey of the rich on the poor."

On the other hand, maybe Stephen was going to quote this from Jefferson: "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on."

Baking a Cake

I'm almost certain that today Stephen is baking a cake for his good friend Bill, or William Shatner as he is known to most of us. Why a cake and why today? Well, today is James T. Kirk's birthday. Or it will be in the year 2228.

I'm hoping that the cake looks like the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). It might be a little bit difficult to get the cake to stand upright on a plate, but if he balances it carefully, he should have no trouble getting it to look perfect.

A marble cake with white fluffy frosting would taste best. He can use some of those shiny Christmas cookie decorations for windows. Or maybe a carrot cake with just plain white frosting if he wanted to make something a little bit healthier. Now I'm getting so hungry that I think I will make a cake, just a rectangular one, in order to help celebrate the future birthday of Jim Kirk.

If you want to read a bit more about James Tiberius Kirk, you can also look here at his official biography. I only glanced at it briefly, but I am seeing a bit of a discrepancy. Some sources say he will be born in 2228, and some say 2233. When the actual day of his birth rolls around, I will post the correct year here. Keep watching.

And if you want to celebrate the birthday of Captain James T. Kirk in his actual birthplace on Earth, look no further than Trekfest XXVIII in Riverside, Iowa.

So, it's a good day to bake a cake and I'm quite sure that is how Stephen is spending his day today. Let me know if I'm wrong and I will make that correction.

One Man Show

For all the drama leading up to the primaries in Michigan and Arizona, there was nothing all that remarkable that happened. Mitt Romney won both, including winning his home state of Michigan by 3.2%. Or, as Romney said, "We won by enough."

So where that seems to be heading is that eventually, everyone will get behind Mitt Romney for the nominee at the GOP Convention. Or, as Stephen put it, "One week from now we will most likely come together and support the guy we're hoping is not the guy."

So that you don't think Stephen is leaving Rick Santorum behind, he did show Santorum talking, again, about birth control. "What I was talking about is the increasing number of children being born out of wedlock in American." Stephen agreed and offered this comment, "Contraception leads to more babies born out of wedlock." It would have been interesting to have heard all the comments from Santorum about that subject, but there were more important things to get to .

For example, the economy, and tonight's Word. Change We Can Believe In. Stephen had an excellent economic discussion in this segment. If I read him right, we need for the rich to become even richer, because they will then give tips to the poor. There's even a law being considered in Florida that would allow employers to pay tipped workers .... a lower minimum wage, changing it from $4.65 per hour down to $2.13 per hour. Stephen showed a photo of a typical Floridian couple and reminded us of the wonderful reputation that the people like those in the photo have of being big tippers. It's even a good idea to tip plumbers and Stephen had a photo of a plumber. I see his point! All in all, Stephen's economic plan made a lot of cents.

I'm kind of tired tonight, so I'm going to try to make this short, or at least shorter. Instead of telling you that Stephen had the segment "Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger" on, I'm just going to call it Tip/Wag in order to save time. One of the things he talked about in this segment is Babyccinos. That's a new "trend" of letting tots drink decaf coffee. We were reminded by Stephen of just how hard it is to get babies up in the morning. Parents out there, you know what he's talking about!

But on the to main event.

William Shatner was the guest tonight. After a brief session of Stephen and William praising each other, they got right down to business. Stephen read quite a lengthy list of accomplishments for William Shatner. You can get an idea of these accomplishment at IMDb. Really, go look, he has had quite a career!

Quite a lot of the interview was just simple conversation, talking back and forth between two talented men.

"Can I call you Bill?"

"No."

"Bill, when people go to see this..." Stephen was talking about William Shatner's One Man Show on Broadway. Shatner's World.

"When people go to see this ..."

"They will learn about love, life, horses, my career, interview shows that work and some that don't." Stephen talked about Star Trek and Captain Kirk, but not much more than mentioning them.

Tonight's arm wrestling segment only lasted about one second, alas. That's how long it took William Shatner to beat and humiliate Stephen.

All in all, it was a very delightful interview.

"Bill, it's been such a pleasure to meet you."

"I wish I could say the same."

1000 Shows, 100 Years

Tonight Stephen announced that it was the 1000th show for The Colbert Report! That translates into 500 hours of watching Stephen on TV. We are all smarter because of his dedication.

It should come as no surprise that politics was again on the menu. Stephen wondered why President Obama doesn't do something about rising gasoline prices. To help him wonder, John Kilduff, Founding Partner of Again Capital, came on the show to explain stuff. For one thing, the world market sets the price based on how much is produced and how much is used. Every year in spring the price of gas goes up - that is the way it is and should surprise no one. We still import 2/3 of our gasoline and new sources here will still take years to develop. And yes, alternative fuels is absolutely something we should be looking into.

Girl Scouts celebrate 100 years! Would you like a Girl Scout Cookie? You might want to know something first. According to Bob Morris, (Republican Representative in Indiana), Girl Scouts are bad. They are a "radicalized organization that promotes abortion and homosexuality." How does he know this? Well, it was on the internet.

"I did a small amount of web-based research and what I found is disturbing."
..... Bob Morris on February 18, 2012

I suspect he didn't really do a lot of serious research. He should have looked here, at Girl Scouts of the USA: Official Web Site. I did (research) and found that some of the partners that have helped Girl Scouts include:

Alcoa Foundation
AT&T
The Coca-Cola Company
Dove
The Goizueta Foundation
Hereford N. Elliot Trust
Jessie Ball duPont Fund
Kappa Delta Sorority
Lockheed Martin
MetLife Foudation
Motorola Solutions Foundation
New York Life Foundation
Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors
Trane USA

And then there are these Affiliates:

Alpine Training Services
American Heart Association's Go Red For Women
CARE
Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School
Earth Hour
EF Tours
Global Explorers
Holbrook
Hostelling International
Independent Television Service
Kappa Delta Sorority
National Association of Elementary School Principals
National Council for International Visitors
National School Boards Association
National Urban League
Outward Bound Wilderness
Peace Corps
Plastic Pollution Coalition
United Nations
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
U.S. Fund for UNICEF
U.S. Green Building Council
U.S. Space & Rocket Center
World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts

Either he knows something they don't know
or
they know something he doesn't know.

But, on to Economics and tonight's guest. Ross Eisenbrey was on the show and he talked about interns. Stephen knows a lot about interns, and we often get to see Jay the Intern helping out on the show. I did not realize this, but Jay the Intern has been on the show for 6 1/2 years.

Ross Eisenbrey and Stephen both seem to agree that internships are good. However, Ross is more in favor of paid internships and paying everyone who works, while Stephen thinks paying is not actually that important. "What is With the law and Paying People?"

Finally, for the happy part of the show - Stephen has done 1000 shows. He gets a ticket each time he does a show and now he has enough to cash in for a prize. That was his goal all along, to amass 1000 tickets. With his goal met, is there really any need for the show to go on??????

Tune in tomorrow when the guest will be William Shatner, (or not, if Stephen decides 1000 shows are enough).
