We are all looking forward to the Big Game and Stephen is pumped to be learning how to be a great football player. We got to see some more demonstrations of his most excellent skills last night and I was especially pleased to find out that he is good enough to play in the Bowl Game. We got to see a preview and it was priceless. At half-time he went into the locker room to give an inspirational talk to the "players" that unified them and gave them the spirit they needed to go back out and play.
Hopefully you got to watch the SOTU speech by President Barack Obama. President Obama called for 2014 to be the year of action and Vice President Joe Biden was just happy to see everyone who was in the audience.
After all the great ideas presented by the POTUS in the SOTU speech, the GOP got in their 2 cents worth, I mean 4 cents worth, I mean 6 cents worth, I mean 8 cents worth. They had four different responses to the SOTU speech. There was Mike Lee for the Tea Party, Rand Paul for the other Tea Party, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for Spanish speakers and the official real GOP response by Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Stephen compared it to having your own personal Sleep Number Bed. I'm sure everyone was especially happy when Cathy McMorris Rodgers looked directly into the camera as she gave her response. (Apologies to Michele Bachmann.)
Just as important as the GOP response to the SOTU speech by the POTUS was the media response to the GOP response to the SOTU speech by the POTUS. Steve Schmidt weighed in and basically said she didn't provide any comedic material for the likes of Jimmy Fallon or Jon Stewart. Kirsten Powers said she didn't do any harm. I think George Will summed it up best when he quoted (I assume) Mother Goose .
A cow kicked Nelly in the belly in the barn.
Didn't do her any good, didn't do her any harm.
On to more football. The guest last night was Cris Carter. There was the obligatory discussion about jewelry, namely Cris Carter's ring. Stephen admired the ring and learned it was not a Super Bowl ring but a Hall of Fame ring. Kudos to Stephen for giving the ring back to Cris Carter after trying it on. They talked a lot about football, what it takes to be a good wide receiver (large hands). And they even played a little football. They had good football chemistry and were even able to use Cris Carter's book, "Going Deep: How Wide Receivers Became the Mose Compelling Figures in Pro Sports," to play a little football type catch.
At the end of the show, Stephen paid tribute to Pete Seeger who died this week. He was 94 years old. Stephen had a clip from when he and Pete Seeger sang the song "If I Had a Hammer" from Pete Seeger's appearance on the show. He was an American treasure.

Tata Vanilla
Nelson Mandela has died and Stephen talked about other people talking about that. Rick Santorum had some nice things to say and then he basically said that ObamaCare equals Apartheid. Stephen honored Rick Santorum by dubbing him Tata Vanilla.
In keeping with a general charity theme, Stephen played a video clip of Bill O'Reilly talking about feeding the Poor. Papa Bear (not to be confused with Tata Vanilla) stressed how important it is to make sure the Poor, even if they are young children, are worthy enough to be fed. If Bill O'Reilly gives money, he makes sure he hands the money directly to the kids and not to the parents because the parents might be losers. Stephen pointed out how important that is. "Remember kids. You can trust people who hand money to you and say, 'Don't tell your parents!'"
Guess who is up for a Grammy! Pete Seeger, along with David Sedaris, Billy Crystal, Carol Burnett, and yes, Stephen Colbert. That's a whole lot of talent. How can anyone choose the best person for this honor? I'm glad I don't have to decide. Perhaps Stephen should just practice saying, "It's an honor to just be nominated." If he wins, on the other hand, well he is already gloating, so he will handle that like a pro.
David Keith, author of "A Case for Climate Engineering," was the guest on Monday night. He told Stephen of his idea to spray sulfuric acid into the atmosphere as a way to slow down climate change, at least temporarily.

Freedom of Speech - Pete Seeger
Freedom of Speech seems to be important to a lot of people nowadays. You hear a lot about it. Which is good I suppose. If people weren't talking about freedom of speech, that would actually probably really mean that there was none!
A while back, Pete Seeger was on The Colbert Report. I was touched that these two great men, Stephen Colbert a conservative, and Pete Seeger a liberal, could sit down and talk together and get along so well. They actually have a lot in common. And I said I would post something else about Pete Seeger. So here it is.
There's a great video to watch. I hope it doesn't disappear after I tell you about it. (UPDATE: It has now disappeared. You can look for yourself, but it's gone. I hope they have it on PBS again.) It is a PBS special about Pete Seeger - "Pete Seeger - The Power of Song (2007) by PBS American Masters."
It is long, so grab a bag of popcorn and watch it and learn and enjoy. We get to see his humble abode, maybe not as humble as when he first built it with his own hands. There's a neat weather vane that looks like a sailboat. We see later in the video that it is not just some random piece of metal art sculpture. It is a tribute to great accomplishments. We see a wall with his many instruments displayed. We get to watch him cutting wood for the fire just like he told Stephen.
Many musicians are featured talking about Pete Seeger. There's a neat story by Arlo Guthrie, a cute little trick. We find out how quickly fame can come and how quickly it can fade. If you don't have time to read history of the last 100 years, this is a great way to find out what was happening from the people who were making it happen.
Johnny Cash talks with Pete Seeger on his show. Tommy Smothers talks about the time when Pete Seeger was on his show - "The Smothers Brothers." Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen. Mary Travers and many more musicians are featured sharing their stories of Pete Seeger.
Freedom of Speech is better when you sing it. It's more powerful and accomplishes much more.
Go watch that video. It will change your life.

We Mars'd It
Curiosity touched down SUCCESSFULLY on Mars. Now everyone is curious. Is there life on Mars? Apparently there did seem to be some sort of feline life, but the Rover landed on top of it. Curiosity killed the cat. But citizens, are there any citizens on Mars? That's the real question. Perhaps this will answer that question. And for lots more information and pictures, yes pictures, head over to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Dan Cathy's confession ran AFOWL of supporters of the LGBT community. Of course, part of the media circus is because of the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day suggested and promoted by Walking Fried Food Museum Mike Huckabee. Stephen noted that while it may have been the best day in history for the fast food restaurant, it was the worst day in history for the chickens. It's time to put this story about Chick-fil-A to bed, but Stephen just had to get in one last jab with his "ran AFOWL" comment. I have never seen Mr. Colbert look smirkier. Cluck, cluck, Stephen. Cluck cluck.
Pete Seeger was the guest. He is a living legend and having him on the show was even better than having Paul Bunyan or Johnny Appleseed show up. Pete Seeger is still going strong. He lives in the country. He heats his home with wood and therefore spends some of his time splitting logs. This impressed Stephen immensely, who, at age 48, claims you can stick him with a fork because he is done.
Stephen was able to put the responsibility for gay marriage smack dab on the shoulders of Pete Seeger by the simple method of basically making it up. Starting with the folk revival that Pete Seeger was instrumental (pun) in, Stephen went on to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Woodstock, Sexual Revolution, Bill Clinton, and therefore gay marriage.
I found this great article over at Huffington Post by Peter Dreier about Pete Seeger. Lots more stuff than we learned from Stephen's interview. There's even the lyrics to the song "Quite Early Morning" at the end of Dreier's post.
Watch in the future for another post about Pete Seeger. There's more to the story of Pete Seeger than one post can do justice to.

Pete Seeger
Music and politics unite in a lifetime of achievement. This has got to be one of Stephen's best guests yet. Stephen always has the best musicians in the world on his show. He often has politicians on his show.
Now he will interview Pete Seeger. There's not many people who know more about anything than Stephen Colbert and yet I'm willing to bet he will learn something tonight.
Will Pete Seeger sing something for us tonight? Oh, I bet he will. Will Stephen sing along. Oh, I hope he will. This is going to be one great show tonight. I just hope Curiosity doesn't do something to knock out my TV machine.
Go read about Pete Seeger here at his website. Or go read about Pete Seeger at Wikipedia.
As for me, I'm getting my banjo out of the closet and my harmonica out of the top dresser drawer.
