Speaking of Fossils

The Sochi Olympics are in full swing so I won't be having as much spare time as usual. I am too busy watching the sports and the fashion and the spectacle. I hope Stephen does not think that I think less of his show than I do of a bunch of people in tights dancing and prancing around on ice and snow.

So, in brief.... Papa Bear interviewed Prez Barack (I am using abbreviated names there to save time. I mean Bill O'Reilly and President Barack Obama in case there are some of you out there who do not know who I am referring to.) Papa Bear asked hard questions and then went on to answer the questions himself.

At the Olympics in Sochi, there is a bit of a problem with yogurt. Chobani Yogurt is being delayed from reaching the Team USA athletes. Not everything in Sochi is done being built. Water problems, sidewalk problems, stray dog in your hotel room problems are just some of the examples we heard about. The most worrisome problem that Stephen mentioned was that some manholes do not have manhole covers on them.

In Tip/Wag we learned that it is extremely important to have labels on your bottles of liquid.

Paul Krugman was Stephen's guest to explain how good ObamaCare (Affordable Care Act or ACA) is really actually working well. People shouldn't be believing all the naysayers out there. Stephen tried to come up with naysaying, including talking about some of the women he knows who might have reasons for wanting health insurance coverage, but Paul Krugman had very good reasons why ObamaCare is a good thing.

He also had to clarify for Stephen and us what others have distorted over and over again. The CBO did not say ObamaCare will kill jobs. The CBO said now that people have the health care that they need, the can voluntarily choose to work fewer hours.

Most important on Thursday's show was the announcement that Jay the Intern has welcomed a little intern to his own family, Baby Eli the Intern. So cute!

Nobody Noticed ... That You Gave ... a Speech

Another great show and I learned a lot. Of course the big news was the SOTU - the State of the Union. If you listened closely, you noticed that President Obama was very pro government. All the news outlets were talking about it. It was offensive to Stephen that President Obama would give such a pro government speech in front of all those government workers.

The main event of the (SOTU) night was Marco Rubio's response to President Obama's State of the Union speech. Stephen had a little bit of fun with that, insisting that people would forget the speech and only remember the quick grab of that bottle of water, Poland Spring water. (Wikipedia has already updated their page on Poland Spring with Rubio's quick grab. It's at the bottom of the article here.) Stephen even demonstrated drinking water as only he could. And I could talk about that, but you really need to watch it yourself if you didn't see it on the TV machine. Catch it later tonight or tomorrow when the show is repeated. Otherwise, go over to Colbert Nation tomorrow and catch the show there. It will be worth it.

What really grabbed my attention though was that Marco Rubio also gave the response in Spanish. Stephen pointed out that it was four minutes longer than the English version. That's not that surprising. Different languages have different ways of expressing things. The fascinating thing was that apparently you can watch video of Marco Rubio delivering the response in Spanish. And there is a transcript that you can read. Unfortunately, it probably is a machine doing the translating and no one told the machine it was a speech in Spanish and so the machine tried to make English words out of what Marco Rubio said in Spanish.

Here's the link. (UPDATE: THAT LINK DOESN'T HAVE TRANSCRIPT. SEE POST FOR FEBRUARY 14.) Go watch it soon because I have a feeling this it the type of thing that could be fixed and then the transcript would be gone. Stephen gave a few examples. It's a hoot.

The guest tonight was Dave Grohl and he was the director for Sound City. He figured out how to play drums and he figured out how to play guitar without anyone teaching him, so he figured why not make a documentary. And he did! After tonight's show, he was off to do a gig with the Sound City Players and Stephen sort of invited himself to join in the fun. I wonder if he really did or not.

Now, go over to the link to Marco Rubio's speech in Spanish and read the transcript. (UPDATE: THAT LINK DOESN'T HAVE TRANSCRIPT. SEE POST FOR FEBRUARY 14.) Just look for the white box that says:

Transcript for Marco Rubio's State of the Union Response (Spanish Language Version).

Mountain Dew

Gasoline, Goldfish and Guitar: Sometimes it seems like Stephen packs two hours worth of Report into one night's show! Tonight was one of those nights. So much stuff to talk about.

Eric Bolling has the magic answer, in a manila envelope, to lower gas prices by a dollar. But, it's a secret. He guarantees it will work. "I guarantee it, gasoline prices come down by a dollar." The only catch is that President Obama is supposed to call Bolling. He let everyone know what his phone number is but then told everybody not to call him. Only President Obama was supposed to call that number because I imagine President Obama is sitting around watching TV in the Oval Office and got out a memo pad to write down the phone number. Well, that sounds like such a sweet deal that Stephen has his own manila envelopes with plans.

1. Eliminate the debt.
2. Invade and defeat Iran in three days.
3. Results of some blood tests.
4. Poetry from college.
5. Plan to organize my manila envelopes.

On a technicality, that of Stephen being the president of his Super PAC along with president of other important organizations, Stephen called Bolling. Of course he got an answering machine, so Stephen left a message with his own phone number to call. Perhaps even as you are reading this Stephen Colbert and Eric Bolling are talking. And so ends the Gasoline segment of this post.

Herman Cain has been busy since dropping out of the race for the GOP nomination for President. You remember Cain, don't you? Shucky ducky, I'm sure you do. He has a new plan or company or website, not sure exactly what to call it. (But I will say there's not much at the Store.) His mission: transfer power from the government to the people. Sounds good, but I have some questions. If you transfer power from the government to the people, will those people make the decisions? And then would they not be governing? And then wouldn't they become the government? So then, someone else would have to get a new mission to transfer power from that government to a new set of "people." This is going to take a while. Maybe we should all just vote in November.

But where is the Goldfish you may be wondering. Okay, Herman Cain has an ad, an avant-garde ad, in which some people think Herman Cain committed Goldfish Murder. He claims the Goldfish is fine, but really, how would we know? There could easily be a stand-in Goldfish. So... Stephen made an ad, an avant-garde ad about all the things we forgot we used to be mad at. Head over to Colbert Nation, probably tomorrow sometime, and watch Stephen's ad. I think Stephen is relieved to have made this ad. That takes care of the Goldfish segment.

Next is the Guitar. It was Elvis Costello who brought the guitar. Also as guests were Emmy Lou Harris and Don Fleming. The really neat thing about watching The Colbert Report is that I learn so much stuff. Alan Lomax collected music, folk music, from all over the world. (Interesting note. When I Googled Alan Lomax, I also looked at Images. I saw something I don't remember seeing before in Google Images - most of the photos were black and white.)We are talking tens of thousands of songs. This was before iPods. We got to see an actual tape player, with actual tape, on the show. We got to listen to Jean Ritchie and Bob Dylan on that tape recorder. You can go to this website:

CulturalEquity.org

and listen to lots and lots and lots of the songs as well as interviews plus more. So much to learn about from all over the world for quite a few years back. You will have way more than enough to keep you busy until Stephen's show is on again on Monday. Just a quick note though. I have been having problems some of the time, but not all of the time, connecting. (The connection has timed out.) I think the site is too busy. Everyone who watched The Colbert Report tonight is checking out Cultural Equity.org.

Folk music is the music of the people, just plain folks. One or two people would get together and sing about what they knew best or what they did all day. This could be sailing, working in a coal mine, maybe someone singing a lullaby, or perhaps working on a whaling ship. "Young people love whaling songs," according to Stephen.

Elvis Costello played guitar, and Emmy Lou Harris and Don Fleming rounded out the trio. Plus Stephen, so that made the trio a quartet. They sounded marvelous of course and you can see a bonus song soon over at Colbert Nation. So, there's the Guitar segment. And Mountain Dew? Well, that's the song they sang.

Once Upon a Time

It is Day Two of what's come to be known as the Colbert SuperPAC Hostage Crisis. Jon Stewart has the money and took off in his Zeppelin to avoid having to give it back to Stephen. The only possible solution is for everyone to send money to Colbert Super PAC and to give recklessly.

Politics continues to be a favorite topic. In last night's show, Stephen mentioned the possibility of a wet t-shirt contest. He was convinced that Newt Gingrich would win that contest.

Stephen ventured into the world of children's literature (Kiddy Lit as it is sometimes called). He thinks he should get into that venue since so many celebrities are writing books. And Stephen is a celebrity, so he should be able to write a children's book and make lots of money.

We had the pleasure of seeing Stephen interview Maurice Sendak, well-known author of children's books. He now has a new book out - Bumble-Ardy. Stephen and Maurice had a very lively discussion. Although Maurice has kept busy writing children's books, he still has time to closely follow the career of Newt Gingrich. He shared some of his observations of Gingrich. Stephen and Maurice went on to talk about another of Maurice Sendak's book, "In the Night Kitchen." Stephen approved of that book so much, he improved it.

Be sure to keep watching The Colbert Report to see the conclusion of Stephen's interview with Maurice Sendak.

Stephen also mentioned that he is a huge fan of Rick Santorum, because the name Santorum is synonymous with leadership. If you have been paying attention to the news you will know that Rick Santorum was in a bit of a sticky spot recently. A woman in the audience at one of the events Santorum was at said this:

"I never refer to Obama as President Obama because legally he is not. He is an avowed Muslim. He has no legal right to be calling himself President."

When asked about this on Morning Joe, about why he did not correct the woman who said that, he had an excuse. "This was an elderly lady. She was there leaning on a cane. She was quite wobbly. Uh, and I'm not going to sit there and, and slam an older lady, uh, because she has some way-out, you know, some, some bizarre beliefs."

"Bravo," said our fearless host. "You cannot correct an old person every time they say something offensive." Well, as luck, or maybe misfortune, would have it, there just happened to be an elderly lady with a cane in the audience. And she spoke her mind with no opposition from anyone.

"I know for a fact that Rick Santorum runs a white slavery ring." She seemed to have the facts to back it up, and even if she was wrong, she had a cane, no wait, 2 canes. Stephen was very hesitant to correct her until she said something that was way out of line. She then received prompt and courteous assistance of two men who were willing to help her walk off into the sunset.

The actual real sit-down guest was Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast. He wrote the cover article in the January 23 issue of Newsweek entitled "Why are Obama's Critics So Dumb?" That did not sit well with Stephen. The discussion became so lively and yes, even loud some times. Here's some of what the two men said:

"Checkmate."

"It is the truth."

"Who cares what's true?"

"Let's go with what feels right."

Stephen was willing to repeat things he (Colbert) said so that they could then be considered to have more truthiness. If anyone would know about truthiness, it is Stephen Colbert.

Breaking News

Khaddafy --- Qadhafi --- Gadhafi -- Whichever way you spell his name, he seems to be on the way out. His location is unknown at this time. His eldest son has been captured as has his brother. State TV had been playing old footage of pro-Khaddafy rallies but switched to a soap opera.

Things are moving quickly. This will be the top story in the morning TV shows and the headlines in most newspapers.

As always, when something like this happens, details may be sketchy, and the story may be updated over and over. There is rejoicing in the streets for now. Hopefully the infrastructure and day to day necessities will be able to be coordinated so that it will be a smooth transition.

I'm watching msnbc now. You can watch what's happening there. Or read about it at Reuters here. President Obama, on vacation (although when is the POTUS ever really on vacation?) is constantly briefed by national security advisers.

History is being made in Libya. Stephen Colbert is on vacation, so we will have to wait for two weeks to hear his view on the events happening there.
