Campaign Contributions

Stephen featured Crimea in his never-ending segment "*Better Know A Geopolitical Flashpoint*" which is fine, but he still hasn't finished doing "Better Know a District." In fact my district got nothing more than a two-second flyby. But I guess there is more going on in Crimea than in my home district, so I will be a grown up and not complain.

Part of the reason Stephen did a segment on Crimea was to highlight the Cold War. Part of the reason he highlighted the Cold War was to show off his Shoe Phone and his Shoe Answering Machine. And part of the reason he wanted to show off his Shoe Phone was to demonstrate how amazingly limber he is. Thanks hot yoga.

As all the unrest is going on over in Crimea and the Ukraine, President Obama is being criticized by politicians and people on TV who talk about news events. President Obama is spotted in the Oval Offices wearing jeans and a casual shirt while talking to Vlad Putin on a 90 minute phone call. This is wrong of course. He should be wearing:

* Suit and Tie because otherwise he doesn't look like he cares what Americans and the world think
or
* No shirt because you know that's what Putin is wearing and it looks like the President doesn't care what Americans and the world think

With all this controversy and whining, Stephen has decided to conduct his own poll. I believe it will be every bit as valid as the one over at Fox News. Go to Colbert Nation .com and answer the question:

"What do 'You' think about what Americans think world leaders think about President Obama?"

You choices are:
Yes
No
Vegetarian Option

Just look for that blue banner, with the words TAKE THE POLL NOW right above the video of Stephen. If you care about the world, you should take the poll. Let Stephen know what you think.

Stephen is outraged by the veto last week by Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona SB1062. Stephen had some insight into her daily meetings with Hansel and Gretel which I was not aware of. But never mind that. Basically, it was all about cake and pastry. Some, however, say that this was about discriminating against the gays. Others say it is about "self-professed behavior." Case in point, Steve King of Iowa. Stephen had a clear explanation of this whole issue.

What it all boils down to is it would be helpful to send "verification" to Steve King to clear up any confusion that might exist. Here's the address:

Representative Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

A good suggestion from Stephen Colbert about the material you send to Steve King is to label it Campaign Contributions thusly:

Campaign Contributions
Rep.Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

This will guarantee that the Rep Rep (short for Republican Representative) Steve King will read it.

Stephen's guest last night was basically someone who does it all. Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist, a composer, a visual artist, an author, the father of Virtual Reality, a scientist, a scholar, and an inventor. That list is probably not complete. He also has great hair and a wonderful laugh which was demonstrated audibly as he watched Stephen work his way slowly from the journalism desk to the interview desk. Stephen, you better be careful; you do not want to break your wrist again!!! Jaron Lanier  has a book out, "Who Owns the Future?"

I am sure the interview could have gone on for an hour, but I will just talk about a few ideas thrown out. Jaron Lanier said that real wealth is community wealth. That's the basic 'we all do better when we all do better' line of thought. Both men were wearing special eyeglasses that gave them special powers. Our middle class is disappearing. Stephen thinks virtual reality could solve that problem, but I think he was not thinking it through completely.  As smart as Jaron Lanier is, he admitted at the end of the interview that basically, Stephen had won the interview.

One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, Three Mississippi

We are all looking forward to the Big Game and Stephen is pumped to be learning how to be a great football player. We got to see some more demonstrations of his most excellent skills last night and I was especially pleased to find out that he is good enough to play in the Bowl Game. We got to see a preview and it was priceless. At half-time he went into the locker room to give an inspirational talk to the "players" that unified them and gave them the spirit they needed to go back out and play.

Hopefully you got to watch the SOTU speech by President Barack Obama. President Obama called for 2014 to be the year of action and Vice President Joe Biden was just happy to see everyone who was in the audience.

After all the great ideas presented by the POTUS in the SOTU speech, the GOP got in their 2 cents worth, I mean 4 cents worth, I mean 6 cents worth, I mean 8 cents worth. They had four different responses to the SOTU speech. There was Mike Lee for the Tea Party, Rand Paul for the other Tea Party, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for Spanish speakers and the official real GOP response by Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Stephen compared it to having your own personal Sleep Number Bed. I'm sure everyone was especially happy when Cathy McMorris Rodgers looked directly into the camera as she gave her response. (Apologies to Michele Bachmann.)

Just as important as the GOP response to the SOTU speech by the POTUS was the media response to the GOP response to the SOTU speech by the POTUS. Steve Schmidt weighed in and basically said she didn't provide any comedic material for the likes of Jimmy Fallon or Jon Stewart. Kirsten Powers said she didn't do any harm. I think George Will summed it up best when he quoted (I assume) Mother Goose .

A cow kicked Nelly in the belly in the barn.
Didn't do her any good, didn't do her any harm.

On to more football. The guest last night was Cris Carter. There was the obligatory discussion about jewelry, namely Cris Carter's ring. Stephen admired the ring and learned it was not a Super Bowl ring but a Hall of Fame ring. Kudos to Stephen for giving the ring back to Cris Carter after trying it on. They talked a lot about football, what it takes to be a good wide receiver (large hands). And they even played a little football. They had good football chemistry and were even able to use Cris Carter's book, "Going Deep: How Wide Receivers Became the Mose Compelling Figures in Pro Sports," to play a little football type catch.

At the end of the show, Stephen paid tribute to Pete Seeger who died this week. He was 94 years old. Stephen had a clip from when he and Pete Seeger sang the song "If I Had a Hammer" from Pete Seeger's appearance on the show. He was an American treasure.

Little Bit Here, Little Bit There, Little Bit Everywhere

While Stephen focused on the GOP winner of the New York Mayoral primary, most of the stories I found over at Google were about the Democratic winner, or probable winner, Bill de Blasio. That first link has lots of photos. Here's a link with more words than photos. Although Stephen had good reasons for his endorsement of Joseph Lhota, I think kittens are cute and therefore I won't be voting for Lhota. Of course, I can't vote for the Mayor of New York City, so that plays into my decision also.

Moving on to national news, Stephen was able to show us all the reasons we can compare Syria and Siri. I did not realize how similar they are. Stephen is a true intellectual giant.

And then there was a very confusing portion of the show. Part of the reason it was confusing is that I started to think that Rand Paul is actually one of a set of quadruplets. Each quad had his own differing opinion on the situation in Syria. Here's a quick rundown on the various positions of Rand Paul and his identical siblings. (I'm not sure which opinion goes with which sibling. Try to sort that out for yourself later.)

1. No diplomacy.
2. Can't do nothing.
3. No to the the President's plan.
4. No to regime change.

This is how one of the Rand Pauls described Rand Paul.

"I think he's been a little bit here, little bit there, and a little bit everywhere. I don't think he makes any sense."

Stephen agreed with that Rand Paul.

Controversies and outrage are ever so popular nowadays. Not a day goes by that you can't get a cup of controversy with that cup of coffee and a bowl of outrage with that bowl of oatmeal. The latest is a photo of President Barack Obama with his foot on his desk.  Apparently he shouldn't do that. Never mind that we have photos of George W. Bush doing that and Gerald Ford doing that. And he's not wearing a suit jacket either. What do you suppose that if he was wearing his suit jacket in the photo there would be complaints that he's wasting money on air conditioning when he could just ease back on the AC by not wearing his suit jacket when he's not meeting with someone important?

Stephen demonstrated how easy it is to find controversy, outrage and conspiracy where there is none. You can do it too. Just look at any photo of a prominent political person and then find something in that photo that reminds you of something that reminds you of something else and then twist that around. Okay, it sounds difficult, but it's easier than you might think. Just practice and you will get better.

Stephen's guest last night was Sheryl Crow. He interviewed her and she sang and yes, there's a bonus song over at Colbert Nation. I am still waiting for the day when an interview with a musician is done musically. That just makes sense.

Your Honor, I Move We Adjourn

Stephen talked briefly about the important parts of Super Bowl XLVII, the Spinach Dip Bread Bowl at his party, the wide assortment of ads, and the fabulous Halftime Show with Beyonce. He was surprised at the quality and energy of the show however. Usually, in his opinion, the shows are of a more "sedate" nature with "older" talent. I assume he enjoyed the show this year though.

Speaking of younger talent, Stephen admitted he usually watches the Megyn Kelly Show on Mute. What brought up this tidbit was his discussion of the GOP and their current understanding that now that the election is over and Hispanics voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama instead of Whatshisname (Chip Ranchero?), they should be voting GOP. They have all the right values and so, they should forget all the negative stuff said about them and just vote for Republicans in the future. We will have to wait a while to see how that plays out.

We got to see what the differences are between a taping of the "The Colbert Report" and a session of the Supreme Court. Needless to say, Stephen's show is much more entertaining. During the interview with Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen was more subdued than he usually is. I figure that is probably because a Justice of the Supreme Court automatically is given a certain amount of respect because the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land. So naturally, you should treat a Justice with some dignity. "Be on your best behavior," is how my grandmother would have put it.

Sonia Sotomayor has a book out, actually two books, one of which is "My Beloved World." It's about her, which makes it an autobiography. There was brief discussion of Dred Scott. But then back to Sonia Sotomayor. She emphasizes that she and the other justices are just ordinary people. Also, if she can reach her dreams, so can other people.

Stephen seemed to have a checkmate situation while they were discussing political affiliation, but he couldn't quite pull off a win. He assumed with all her success and self reliance that she should be a conservative. But how would he know? Well, because Obama appointed her. But actually, she points out that she is an independent.

When asked what her most conservative belief is, she answered, "I believe in the Constitution." If that didn't win her a ton of points with Mr. Stephen Colbert, I don't know what possibly could. (But then there was a whole lot of discussion about who Stephen Colbert is or was or could be. That part was confusing to everyone!)

And as for the other book she wrote. Well that is, "Mi mundo adorado." I am looking forward to reading both books. I wonder which one I will like better.

It's Art, It's Lousy Art

Stephen shared with us his "I'm With Mitt" photos. It was a great summary of Election Night minus the fireworks.

Do you know any Difference Makers? I'm sure you do, but none quite like Steven Dick, Jr. He owes a ton of back taxes but refused to pay them because New York tax law has an exemption (according to Dick) for his type of business establishment. Stephen presented a mini-documentary that was a wonderful mixture of legal information along with musical and dramatic performances.

Contrary to what was published in "The New England Journal of When Harry Met Sally," men and women can't be just friends. Harry was right and Sally was wrong. Stephen shared his thoughts about the 700,000 women viewers who watch his show.

Thursday night's guest was Rachel Maddow of "The Rachel Maddow Show" fame. She was one of the newscasters who stayed up late on Election Night to report the results. "What was it like?" asked Stephen. Well, Rachel admitted that she had pudding brain after not having enough sleep. When Ohio was called for Obama and Obama had won re-election, they were caught off guard, they weren't expecting it to happen then.

Stephen commented that the folks over at Fox seemed more freaked out than the folks at msnbc seemed elated. Probably the folks over at msnbc were simply reporting the news fairly and balanacedly, so no emotion needed.  We also find out that predicting the outcome of an election based on enthusiastic crowds is a lousy way to predict elections.

One thing that Stephen respects is the way Rachel Maddow can deconstruct the news. She mixes it up a bit and then reconstructs the news. According to Stephen this ends up being a conservative killing machine.

Stephen plugged Rachel Maddow's book "Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power." But not before discussing his view of how hurricanes are spawned. I don't think Rachel Maddow believed his fuzzy science.

We Won! We Won!

I accurately predicted that almost half of the candidates would win and I was right. Yeah yeah I know. In any group of races one person will win and one will not. And yes, there are more than just two candidates for some offices, but by and large, half of those candidates running will win. So I can claim to have predicted something that was sort of accurate about the election. I take credit where credit is due. Next time I will actually name names. That would give a certain validity to my predictions.

In order to know who won, I had to stay up late, very late. So late that the bakers were already at the bakery baking and the night watchmen were on their last walk through the art gallery. What that means is that I didn't get to watch the wonderful election coverage from Stephen. Don't tell me how it ends. I do have it on TiVo. I'll watch this afternoon and then I'll write about the election coverage.

What I did want to mention though is a certain guest on The Colbert Report accurately predicted who would win the White House. (Spoiler Alert --- The winner was Barack Obama.)

The guest - Nate Silver.

Now, as Stephen says, go buy his book. Just one thing though. No one can say why sales have soared by 800 percent. Was it the election result or was it the Colbert Bump? You be the judge.

86.3%

GO VOTE!

That's how Stephen ended the show. But let me start at the beginning.

Of course you all know about the Colbert Super PAC, Building a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. Well who do you think said this?

"We can begin a better tomorrow, tomorrow." Oh, you won't believe who it was. Stephen seemed pleased, ("He used our slogan!") but I can tell you, I am steamed. Stephen made up that slogan and it belongs to the Colbert Super PAC and all the fine folks over at Colbert Nation and to the The Colbert Report. So here's who said it: Mitt Romney.

Really, plagiarism, that's how it's going to be? That does it. I'm going against all the conservative ideas Stephen has been preaching all these years and endorsing Barack Obama. There. I said it. Stephen has worked so hard every hour of every day building his Colbert Super PAC. Now to have the slogan, well the last four words of it, used in a speech by someone else,... well forgive me if I cry on my computer and make the words run off the screen.

Whew, deep breath, calm down. Okay. I'm feeling better. Maybe not that big of a deal. Moving on.

Stephen did a somber impression of Maya Angelou and then a more upbeat impression of Kid Rock. They are sort of the poets for each of the presidential campaigns. You decide which poet belongs to which candidate. Stephen also mentioned an excellent documentary that CNN did on bears a few years back. I missed that documentary but it sounded like it was quite informative.

Sasha Issenberg chatted with Stephen briefly and told him what was a very surprising piece of information. Based on everything that is known about Stephen Colbert, there is a 94% chance that he will support Obama. Now you know why polls and surveys and predictions can be so "iffy." Everyone knows Stephen Colbert is a conservative. And he's supporting Obama! Wow - do fish swim? Is the Pope Catholic? I could go on, but you get the idea. Stephen Colbert votes for Obama. Please. Really, please.

Tomorrow is the... The Election. The race is "razor tight" according to nearly everyone. With that said, Stephen talked about his upcoming guest, Nate Silver, New York Times Polling Jedi and author of the Five Thirty Eight blog. In 2008, Nate Silver correctly predicted 49 out of 50 states.

One of the first things Stephen said is that even a stopped clock is right 98% of the time. So, a good introduction to percentages. Nate Silver is now predicting that Barack Obama has a 86.3% chance of being re-elected! He is so sure of it that he even had a famous bet with Joe Scarborough about the outcome of the presidential election.

Stephen, along with many other people, is skeptical of Nate Silver's predictions. In fact, this is what Stephen said on the subject:

"I am not the only one tarnishing Silver's sterling reputation."

(I'll wait while you let that clever quote sink in. Stephen was oh-so-pleased with himself.)

So, Nate Silver was on. He was on four years ago and received the famous "Colbert Bump" and since then has a pretty cushy job over at New York Times. Most likely thanks to Stephen. Nate has a book out, looks quite interesting if you judge a book by its cover and also by the words inside. The book is, "the signal and the noise: why so many predictions fail --- but some don't." No, I was not too lazy to capitalize the words. They are all in lowercase on the book cover. I think that means the book is more down to earth and not as uppity as some people's books are. So, again, it sounds like a good book.

Stephen ended the show with these words:

GO VOTE!

Sound advice. Be sure to vote tomorrow. The lines my be long. But this is important. Your family is counting on you to vote. Your country is counting on you to vote. And Stephen Colbert is counting on you to vote. Don't make him cry.

Presidential Coverage

First of all, more exciting than you can imagine, Nate Silver, yes, THE Nate Silver will be Stephen's guest on The Colbert Report tonight. I am so pumped I can hardly sit still. The night before the Presidential Election and Stephen is able to grab Nate Silver. We will have the most influential person in the world interviewing the most knowledgeable political guru in the world. Buy Nate's book. Also, you can visit his blog, Five Thirty Eight. Does it get any better?

Apparently, yes, it will. Tomorrow night there will election coverage. Not just election coverage, but ELECTION COVERAGE.

First will be "Election Night 2012: This Ends Now." That is Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. Next will be "Election 2012: A Nation Votes, Ohio Decides; The Re-Presidenting of America: Who Will Replace Obama? '012!" That of course is Stephen Colbert with The Colbert Report.

If that isn't good enough for you, both shows will be simulcast on MTV's Times Square JumboTron as well as some live streaming. Find out more here and remember, please don't leave "garbage" in Times Square.

Very Very Big, Very Big

Let's get right to it. Donald Trump has been talking. His latest promotion is this: If President Barack Obama shows some assorted college and passport papers to Donald Trump, then Donald Trump promises he will give $5,000,000 to a charity of President Barack Obama's choice. There is a caveat. (Neat that he used that term considering who the guest was later in the show.) It must be by 5:00 p.m. (Neat again - another Latin term!) on October 31, 2012. If Obama does this, Trump will be totally satisfied.

Stephen has a generous and selfless counter-offer for Donald Trump with an offer of $1,000,000 from the Colbert Super PAC to any charity. All Trump has to do is basically just relax and stop talking for a little while. Let his cares melt away. Be one with the world. There is, however,  a similar caveat from Stephen. It also must happen by 5:00 p.m. on Halloween.

Is it possible to show a link between FOX, a bunch of questions, and a vigorous exercise routine? I think so and Stephen demonstrated how that could be done last night. He brought up the topic of Libya and then immediately showed many of the FOX newsypeople asking questions, such as, "Who?" "What"? "Why?" and "How?" (They forgot When and Where, but that was a few weeks ago in Libya.) Stephen asked a very important question. "If you put a statement in the form of a question, is that journalism?" We also got to see FOX Legal Analyst Peter Johnson, Jr. (or Richard Richard Richard as Stephen pointed out), admit, "I have no evidence of this."

But this whole question and question session was also a demonstration of what I assume is Stephen's exercise regimen that keeps his 6-pack firing on all six cylinders. He power-walked the studio. He danced down the steps. He climbed monkey bars. He tread on a treadmill. Even after this vigorous workout, he was still able to keep on with journalism by asking one last question. "But ultimately, the question is, how many questions do we have to ask before voters forget? President Obama killed Osama bin Laden."

Moving from journalism to politics, Stephen brought out his "Days Without a GOP Rape Mention" board. It had been at 13, but he had to erase that, write in a 0 (zero), sniff the marker before putting the cap back on it, and continue with his explanation. The latest GOP personality to blunder into the rape controversy is Richard Mourdock, Indiana candidate for U.S. Senate. He has said that even when a pregnancy results from rape, it is something that God intended to happen.

Stephen reminded us why he has to keep track on his "Days Without a GOP Rape Mention" board. There's Todd Akin with his "...the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down..." comment, Steve King who never heard of a girl getting pregnant from statutory rape, Tom Smith who equated rape with out of wedlock pregnancy, and Roger Rivard who offered advice that "... some girls, they rape so easy..."

"Well, some political careers they end so quickly," reported Stephen.  He calls them Team Rape. Stephen admits they probably don't appreciate that designation, but, "Come on, they're kinda asking for it."

Stephen felt the need to remind his fellow conservatives that in 1920, women won the right to vote. He then offered great advice to these fellow conservative men should they ever be in a conversation and feel the need to say something about rape. This was so important that he told them to go grab a pencil. He proceeded to give them wonderful advice, advice that should spare them the awkward positions they might get in by talking about rape or abortion.

Sadly this advice comes to late for Richard Mourdock. His campaign is in shambles, but Stephen realized this is just something God intended to happen.

Stephen's guest was not ancient, but he did talk about an ancient culture - the Romans. Anthony Everitt joined Stephen and he knows a whole lot about ancient Rome and has written many books. The most recent is "The Rise of Rome - the Making of the World's Greatest Empire." Although you might think someone who wrote about the ancient Romans would be all stuffy and boring, I actually think there was more humor and back and forth banter than with someone who is a movie star or comedian. Both men were obviously experts about Rome and Romans. Good times.

Attractive Default Expression

Fans of The Colbert Report may be surprised to learn that a Parachute is Not Included. You've been warned.

Stephen watched the Presidential Debate last night and admitted to playing a drinking game. You know how that always turns out. We did learn that basically (n)+4 years=4 years more than (n). No surprise there. I'm pretty sure Mitt Romney was depressed that he didn't get to play back-up acoustic guitar on Barack Obama's successful Apology Tour. Brit Hume awarded the coveted "Attractive Default Expression" to Mitt Romney. For a while, I thought Stephen was going to spend the rest of the show just gazing at Mitt's Attractive Default Expression, but luckily, as Stephen often says, "moving on. "

Nell was featured for a short segment on the show. She is apparently one of the Undecided Voters. The typical Undecided is a single white female, 18-29 years old, employed but has a low income, comes from a Union household, didn't graduate from college, is Protestant but doesn't go to church, and most likely skipped watching the debate. After learning all that, we also learned that she while she is happy, she is still undecided.

Anyone who rides bicycles is most certainly aware that Lance Armstrong has been having some problems lately. Fans of the show will of course know that Stephen started his own Wriststrong charity to highlight wrist injuries. He explained in some detail certain aspects of his own life in colorful detail and his decision and the rationale behind that decision to step down as Chairman of Wriststrong. He will remain on the Board of Directors, and as the only person on the Board, will serve as interim Chairman. Friends of Colbert Nation will remember that the Wriststrong bracelets help raise money for the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

Just one more thing. Stephen will still keep his title, The Reverend Sir Doctor Stephen T. Mos Def Colbert D.F.A., Heavyweight Champion of the World but now he will be putting two large asterisks after it, so it will now be The Reverend Sir Doctor Stephen T. Mos Def Colbert D.F.A., Heavyweight Champion of the World**.

Stephen's guest was John Grisham who brought his newest book, "The Racketeer." Stephen mentioned another author, Stephen King, and although it's not a contest, Stephen King is winning with 48 books compared to John Grisham's 30 books. Stephen Colbert did say that "The Racketeer" is a great book. John Grisham said, "It's brilliant." Even though neither man is a comedian, the discussion seemed to generate more than the usual amount of laughter from the audience.

I Like the Rose Garden, The Roses Are the Right Height

Stephen was excited about the presidential debate on Tuesday night. He talked about some of the preparation by Mitt Romney which included bar-stool sitting. He's a Mormon, so he has no experience in sitting on stools.

Everyone seemed to be in agreement with Stephen about how great the debate was. One of the hotly debated topics was Libya and the attack that happened in Libya. Mitt was all prepared to score and Stephen was excited by that prospect.

Mitt Romney: "I think it's interesting the President just said something which which is on the day after the attack he went in the Rose Garden and said this was an act of terror."

Barack Obama: "That's right, sir."

Mitt Romney: "You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack it was an act of terror?"

And then, Mitt Romney gave Barack Obama the dreaded googly-eyed stare and a nod of his head down.

Mitt Romney: "It was not a spontaneous demonstration? Is that what you're saying?"

Barack Obama: "Please proceed, Governor."

Mitt Romney: "I want to make sure we get that for the record because it took the President 14 days before he called the attack in Benhgazi an act of terror."

Barack Obama: "Get the transcript."

The moderator clarified the whole issue by saying the President did in fact say it was an act of terror on the day after the attacks.

Barack Obama: "Can you say that a little louder, Candy?"

Stephen had a conniption and Mitt Romney had that kind of "deer staring into headlights" look.

Stephen Colbert: "It's supposed to shake things up the other way!" This was not going well for either Stephen or Mitt.

Part of the blame could be the questions. According to Megyn Kelly, the questions were stupid ones about topics we haven't heard before. And there were crazy subjects such as equal pay for women and gun violence. (How do we get more of the first one and less of the second?)

Mitt Romney had a suggestion on how to cut down on gun violence: "But, gosh, to tell our kids that before they have babies they ought to think of getting married to someone. That's a great idea." So, gun violence - solved.

Alpha Dog of the Week. Lately Stephen has been having Alpha Dogs that have been sort of wimpy. Not tonight. Tonight he told us about  Dr. Scott Desjarlais. (It has something to do with hypocrisy.)

There are a lot of reasons why he gets top billing in the dog department. First of all, he says he is pro-life. According to his website, "All life should be cherished and protected. We are pro-life." Secondly, he had an affair with a patient. When she said she was pregnant, Dr. Desjarlais urged her to get an abortion. That's not enough to get Alpha Dog billing, though. Additionally, he made a tape of the conversation with his mistress about an abortion. And he did this because he thought it would  repair his marriage. Stephen tells us that for some reason his wife still divorced him, so ladies, he's available. Technically, he's remarried but that never stopped him before. So, for growling at abortion and then begging for it, Stephen made Dr. Scott Desjarlais the Alpha Dog of the Week.

Stephen's guest last night was a writer, a director, a producer, and a star. It was really one person, not four - Tyler Perry. Stephen mentioned, as he often does, that it's not a contest but he's winning. (I think Stephen is perhaps somewhat competitive, but I'm not going to say that.) They talked about Tyler Perry's new movie, "Alex Cross." Stephen thought it was a comedy, but it appears to be more of a fast-paced action thriller.

Next question asked was if Tyler Perry was a Romney guy. Tyler Perry avoided answering that question, so we will never know who Tyler Perry supports for president. One thing we did learn is that he is ready for the election to be over with. "Let's just vote already!" he told Stephen.

The two men ended the show in prayer with Stephen praying that Alex Cross would be a huge success.

Like It Says On The Side Of My Van

Stephen's audience last night was the best, or at least the loudest, and most attentive, of any audience I can remember seeing/hearing on The Colbert Report. I wonder if they got an award.

Presidential election. It should be easy to figure out who will win. Just travel all over the country, ask millions of people what they think and who they will vote for. Or, get a cup of coffee at 7-Eleven. It seems that in the past 2 presidential elections, 7-Eleven has been able to accurately predict the winner. You walk in, grab a blue Obama coffee cup or a red Romney coffee cup and the rest is or will be history. Currently, Obama has 60% compared to Romney's 40%. Stephen pointed out the obvious flaw in this poll. Mormons can't drink coffee! Stephen has suggested that we should be requiring voter ID of anyone buying a cup of joe.

Next in presidential election news is pizza. Pizza Hut is also throwing their pizza into the ring. It has prompted some to say they are promoting product placement when we should be promoting democracy. Kurt Kane, CMO of Pizza Hut, issued a statement about this:

"We recognize there are a lot of serious issues to be debated, but we also know a lot less serious - but no less important - ones are being discussed every night inside houses across the country."

Stephen did not have a photo of Kurt Kane, but he did have a visual approximation. We all know that visual approximations are just as good as actual photograph.

Stephen moved away from presidential elections and over to education. An article in US News from a while back talked about Kids in Poor Neighborhoods Fall Behind in School. While there might be many obvious and good solutions, Stephen brought up another one. Dr. Michael Anderson prescribes Adderall for struggling students.

As you all most likely know, Stephen considers bears to be a great threat. Tonight he talked about bears who steal iPads, bears who shop at Sears and bears who eat at Olive Garden. I guess he is right to be so afraid of bears.

Naomi Wolf was the guest on the show. Stephen had lots of questions, lots of answers and generally kept her in good spirits. She has a new book out, Vagina: A New Biography. Some of his questions were of the general type, variations of, "How are you?" Other questions were more specific, such as "Where is this lab?" I think he came away from the interview with increased knowledge and appreciation of Naomi's observations of many topics.

Free Range Interns

I'll be brief. (Halloween AND the upcoming election are keeping me so very busy.)

Mitt Romney now has a plausible chance at winning. Stephen had very detailed suggestions for what the supporters of President Obama need to do. The Arctic Sea Ice is shrinking - well, duh, that water is freezing cold. Of course it's gonna shrink. There's a lot more interest in that whole Arctic region by nearly everyone. But really, it belongs to Santa.

Mitt Romney will solve all the Mideast problems. For example, he will put the leaders on Iran on notice. Stephen demonstrated with the On Notice Board. Wow. That was easy. Problem solved.

The guest tonight was Morrissey. They had a very vigorous discussion about the queen and what people should eat. For as serious as the discussion was, it sure brought out the laughs from the audience. I wonder if it was something Stephen said.

Whew, I hope stuff settles down so I can write more.

Revenue Neutral

We found out a little bit about math on the show, --- just a teeny tiny bit. Paul Ryan doesn't give specifics of Mitt Romney's tax plan because it would take too long to go through all the math. So, now we know why we don't know what everyone has been waiting to know. It was a great answer that Paul Ryan gave to Chris Wallace, but it would take Stephen too long to explain why it is a great answer so just trust Stephen and by default I imagine we should trust Paul Ryan.

Stephen informed us that President Obama is a net job creator, in other words, more jobs created than lost, so that's a nice thing.

In The Word, we found out that it is possible to get a jobs in manufacturing that pay 23 cents an hour! There is a catch, you need to be in prison to get these jobs. There is this law that dates way back to the 1930s establishing Unicor. In some ways, it seems good because it provides work and training for prisoners. Labor is very cheap, obviously, but prices don't have to be. The down side is that it makes it hard for other companies to compete with those kinds of labor costs. Sounds like no easy answers on this one.

In New York, it is the last day of the General Assembly of the UN. And you know what that means. Shopping!!! While Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is in New York, his entourage has been snatching up great bargains at various stores around town. Stephen did have some concerns about this, but I think he may have been confused, so not as bad as he thought.

Everything on the show seemed to have a strong tie to math, or a strong time to not using math (see Paul Ryan above). Even the guest(s) had a mathematical leaning. The Musical guests were Ben Folds Five, which you would think would be a band with five people in it but actually, it's only three guys. They were there to talk with Stephen about the name of their band and other more interesting stuff. They performed "Do It Anyway," from their album "The Sound of the Life of the Mind." You know how you often can go over to Colbert Nation and hear a bonus song? Well, not so this time folks. The message at the bottom of the screen said, "For Bonus Song, go buy their album. There's nothing on our website."

So, go buy it.

Look What He's Done

Stephen was disappointed, or rather should I say outraged, that at the VMA the band fun. was beaten by the boy band One Direction.

"Boo.  Boooo."

Stephen expressed his opinion. He talked about the illogical premise of the song, "You Don't Know You're Beautiful." That's what makes you beautiful??? But they just told her and so now she knows it therefore she's no longer beautiful so obviously then she wouldn't know she's beautiful. Well, Stephen just calls it Mobius Pop and moves on to more important stuff. Oh, and in protest, I'm only posting a link to fun. and not a link to One Direction. Hope this helps Stephen feel better.

Night Three of the Omabathon featured Barack Obama giving his speech. I got the impression that Barack Obama was so good that Stephen was impressed! However, one of the claims that Barack Obama made was exactly what Republicans have been working so hard these last four years (not exactly four years, but close enough) to disprove: "I'm the President."

Stephen put it all on the line and bet that we will never hear Mitt Romney say those words.

Liberal pie in the sky ideas showed through in the speech, ideas such as auto workers should be able to afford to buy an auto, Boeing workers should be able to afford a 747 and McDonald's cashiers should be able to afford a burger. (Fantasy World!)

The Conventions are over now. What have we learned? Hispanics are worth their weight in gold. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are as different as black and white. We haven't had such a clear choice since Crystal Pepsi which Stephen said is as current as the Republican Platform.

Even with the differences, though, the candidates did agree on some things. They agreed this is a great nation. They agreed the future is important. The agreed we need jobs. And they both blessed these United States of America. Republicans frowned and said that our country needed help and look what Obama did while the Democrats turned that frown upside down and said that our country needed help and look what Obama did. (If you want to see what he did, check it out here.)

In a surprise development, Stephen was forced to shut down the famous "The Colbert Bump." As you may have noticed, this week is repeat week. So, tonight is this very episode that you are reading about here! You can see Stephen shut down the Bump; if you can handle it, that is.

The guest was (and will be yet again tonight) Ed Rendell, former Governor of Pennsylvania. He talked about his recent book, "A Nation of Wusses - How America's Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great." Stephen and Ed Rendell talked about Democrats. "We believe one thing we should do is take care of each other and our most vulnerable citizens." The crowd applauded when Ed Rendell said that. Stephen countered with, "Obama threw around 'citizenship' like it has responsibilities." Ed agreed. It is as if Obama was saying not only am I a citizen, but this is what citizenship means and the Republicans aren't doing those citizenship things. Obviously, Stephen did not like those types of comments by the President.

Ed also talked about the little guy that Republicans are afraid to stand up to, the one that no one voted for, who, like a modern day Wizard of Oz, pulls the strings and levers. Now, I'm not going to say Grover Norquist's name here, so you'll just have to figure out who Ed was talking about.

Stephen reminded his audience not to be wusses.

Isaac to Trump: You're Fired

First off, I want to say what great opening credits those are for this week's "Tampa 2012 - America Strikes Back." Someone should make a movie.

Two things are going on in the country now. The Republican National Convention in Tampa and Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf Coast. Because of one of these events, the other event had to change its course. And since it's pretty hard to make a hurricane change course, you have probably figured out that its the Republican Convention that changed course. Well, changed its schedule, so almost the same thing. As a result, Donald "The Donald" Trump did not get to give his speech. Here was about the only platform where Donald Trump would be able to share his views and he lost out on that chance. When will we ever get to hear him talk again? I just don't know.

Other speakers have canceled in order to go back to their states and be there for the hurricane: Governors Rick Scott of Florida, Robert Bentley of Alabama and Phil Bryant of Mississippi. That's okay, there are plenty of other people at the Convention. Chris Christie will give the keynote speech, Paul Ryan will accept the Vice Presidential nomination and Marco Rubio is Hispanic. Time permitting, Mitt Romney will speak.

The most important thing happening at the Convention isn't happening in Tampa. It is happening online, on the Internet over at Colbert Nation. Stephen mentioned that Tampa is known for its strip bars and they are expecting to do a brisk business form delegates. Therefore security is tight. Everyone should have a security pass and so everyone should go here to get their Tampa 2012: America Strikes Back All-Access Pass. Even if you choose not to get one, you should at least go look at the choices on the form. You will find out a lot about yourself just by the choices you make.

You will need to fill in the usual things, your name, your sexuality, your most urgent lower taxes priority, your home state, your summer home state, your ski home state and your tax haven country. Also you will be asked to vote for your favorite Repetitive Republican.

You may remember that Todd Akin made waves last week with his statements that reflected his knowledge of how the female body works. Stephen tried to clear up all the confusion with his Hoo-Ha Lady Zone 5000. He was able to lay it all out for us to show the workings of the female reproductive system, including the dragon that guards the entrance. Good. Now we know. If you need any more info, just stop by any strip joint.

Stephen also talked briefly about Rep. Steve King, Congressman from Iowa, (not to be confused with Stephen King who talks about and writes about scary stuff). Rep. King defended Akin and Stephen shared videos of Rep. King being so fair and balanced that he will say one thing and then say the opposite. I think he's supporting both sides of an issue. Stephen Colbert just thinks Rep. King can't hear what comes out of his mouth.

The guest was Andrew Sullivan, political conservative and Editor of The Dish over at The Daily Beast. He claims to be a conservative. Yet he supports Barack Obama for President, even more so than he did when Barack Obama first ran in 2008. But that's just because the other party has gotten nutsier than they were the last time around. This was indeed an interesting discussion by two conservatives, talking about the upcoming presidential election.

I'm pretty sure we will hear more in the coming days about this election. It's just a feeling I have.

American Experience

I never get tired of hearing the audience chanting, "Stephen. Stephen. Stephen." And neither does Stephen. It goes right to his heart, almost keeping it beating. He seems to have a special relationship with his audience that is special.

Not unlike what Mitt Romney said on the first leg of his World Tour about a special relationship. He started in the UK (United Kingdom or England or Britain, whatever) and made headlines there at the Guardian. "Disconcerting" is what he said about the Olympics being held in London. Oops.

Mitt Romney's campaign also talked about the special relationship Romney would have with the UK because of his Anglo-Saxon heritage. Stephen explained that that could be code for WASP, meaning White Anglo Saxon Protestant, but since Romney only said Anglo Saxon, Stephen suggested you could leave off the W and the P when referring to Romney.

Every time I play Scrabble, I always try to get the word "that" on the Scrabble board and then I claim that "that" refers to Quiznos and try to claim the score for that word instead of for "that." That strategy never works. Oh, well. But now there is confusion, some of it intentional about the word "that" in presidential politics. You can read about "You Didn't Build That" over at Huffington Post. President Obama was talking about, basically, working together to get things done. Funny story. Stephen showed clips of Mitt Romney saying almost the exact same thing that Barack Obama had said. It's hard to bash someone if you keep agreeing with him.

However, Stephen was also a bit upset about that comment as it relates to him personally. He built the show, The Colbert Report, by himself. To prove it, he sent his whole staff on a permanent break and was able to do "The Word" with just a simple desk lamp, his iPhone, and a dry erase board. The dry erase marker, well that was a bit of a problem. I'm happy to report that everyone, including Stephen, came back after the break.

Stephen's guest tonight was Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. While Stephen suggested that a moment of silence is fitting after a gun violence tragedy, Dan Gross suggested that there are ways that we can prevent people from being killed by guns while still protecting our Second Amendment rights. If It Ain't Broke

When something happens, people offer their take on it. It is the rare individual who can predict what will happen in the future and jump the gun on what everyone else will say when the event actually occurs. Richard Mourdock, GOP Republican Candidate in Indiana, is just such a psychic. Or so it seemed until you realize what the rest of the story was. He posted a YouTube video with his reaction to the Supreme Court's decision on Health Care. But to cover all bases, he posted four different reactions for four different scenarios.

Quick hint on how to be a psychic. "Pick a number between one and five."
"Okay, I pick the number four."
"Now look under the stapler."
"Wow! There's a note that says 'I knew you were going to pick four.' Amazing."

Here's how it works. In the top drawer was a note that said "I knew you were going to pick one." Behind the calendar was a note that said, "I knew you were going to pick two." Of course, this trick can only be used once with a each person. (I remember this trick from an episode of Columbo.) You can use this trick on those friends who don't watch old Columbo shows or read this blog. You will amaze them.

But back to the Republican psychic. Apparently all those YouTube videos were posted too soon - before the decision from the Supreme Court was handed down. The important thing about all of this is of course how Stephen reacts to it. He did his own set of reactions to Supreme Court decisions. That was actually very helpful because while I do pay attention to politics, no one can know everything and so it was great to hear what some recent decisions have been. Thanks for the information Stephen!

The Economy is Bad. That's bad, right? Or is that good? It's the old glass half full predicament. For Mitt Romney, it is wonderful. He can say it's all the fault of Barack Obama, so vote for me instead. On the other hand, people like Rick Scott in Florida say the Economy is good. And he says it's all because of him. This is simplifying things, sure, but it presents a problem for people like Rick Scott. He's a Republican so he should support Mitt Romney so that Romney can get elected. But Rick Scott also has to look out for himself and try to look good. Rick Scott says there's been a lot of job growth in Florida. That reminded me of a chart I saw about job growth. (I love charts and graphs.)

I digress. Stephen had some Rick Scott ads that he showed us and told us there was one problem with them. It seems that elderly Florida residents were confused and thought the Rick Scott ads were Barack Obama ads! (But they also think those Allstate ads are Obama ads, so not surprising. Apparently they are confusing Dennis Haysbert with Barack Obama.) Personally, I think Stephen is poking fun at Floridians and not giving them enough credit.

Last night's guest was Frank Deford, sportswriter. Most of the time I find that sportswriters are sports first and writers second. It seems to be the other way with him. He has a real passion for sports that goes beyond the simple win/lose of what I typically think of. His most recent in a long line of books is "Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter." He and Stephen had a meaningful discussion on the two different meanings of Over Time. As it is spelled in the title, it would mean a long time span. But, being a sports enthusiast, it also brings to mind the extra time played after a game when the score is tied. So, nice play on words. The two of them briefly talked about anatomy and politics. Frank Deford brought the two of them together nicely by praising our opposable thumbs, saying how strange then not use them in sports (soccer) and (jokingly?) saying that's why America is such a super power. Well, I guess you had to be there to appreciate the humor of it all. Trivia about Deford. He played basketball for the Washington Generals, and thus played against the Harlem Globetrotters. He also is a big fan of Title IX.

Is Stephen Colbert Swedish?

Barack Obama, announced he will not be deporting illegal immigrants, brought here as children who have a high school diploma and no criminal record. Oh, great. Now the doors are wide open for people who are already here. Obama does already have a great reputation among Latino voters with quite an impressive lead in the polls. Plus even among GOP circles, it is being called the right thing to do. Stephen however thinks he is pandering and yes, even trying to get re-elected. Just look at that burro the Democrats use for their party. Stephen suggests that if you hit it, candy and free health care will fall out. If Mitt Romney were the president, he would veto the Dream Act and fully expect that people would simply self-deport. (Didn't they do that in Star Trek once? No. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Never mind.)

Full disclosure: Stephen is a member of the White House Press Corps Reserves and he can heckle with the best of them. That would be Neil Munro who heckled the president and was called out on it by no less than Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly, Chris Wallace and Don Lemon.

Stephen has the best audience in the world. That's a fact because Stephen said it. And they need to help Stephen with the ongoing diplomatic talks with Sweden. Stephen can speak Swedish fluently and he likes to Tweet. Therefore, everyone should go to Colbert Nation and help him get his rightful chance to  be the official Tweeter for a Week for Sweden. It is sort of up in the air now as to whether he will be able to claim his chance. Here is what Sweden has said about this topic.

"People who are not Swedish citizens cannot take over the account, no yet anyway...we have a very long list already. Colbert will have to wait."

-Sergio Guimaraes
Media Relations Manager

June 13, 2012

Here's the thing. Already Stephen has given Sweden's Twitter Account the famous Colbert Bump. Heck, tourism will probably double in the next year for Sweden just because of him. Well, stay tuned. Hopefully Sweden will see the light and give Stephen the account for a week.

Paul Krugman was the guest and had lots and lots of interesting things to say. He does have a book out also. "End This Depression Now." He also has written many other books and has a whole bunch of awards. An interesting tidbit that he talked about. You often hear politicians claim that government doesn't create jobs. Ha! Tell that to fire fighters, police officers, and teachers. Krugman said that if we rehired laid off workers from those thee groups, we would be a long way towards ending this depression. He also talked about Ireland, with 14% unemployment. He called Ireland Romney's Economics in practice. Something to think about if we care about our economy.

Wrapping Up

Stephen is back tonight and I will again be posting on my regular schedule.

Here's a real quick wrap-up of what has happened in the past few weeks.

Obama spiked the football. (Think Mission Accomplished and Bin Laden.) Paul Ryan talks about the poor or as Stephen said, "Tough love thy neighbor as thyself. Get your own loaves and fishes." U.S. Catholic Bishops said poppycock* about Paul Ryan's budget. (* Actual word was more descriptive than poppycock.) We got to see the Richard Branson ice cube. Kermit the Frog is in hot water in Germany. Jack White was on the show, and while he was not interviewed, Stephen and Jack did talk extensively before the musical portion of the show.

There you have it. You can get more details about past shows over at Colbert Nation.

Tonight Stephen is going to have Charlize Theron on the show. She plays a queen in an upcoming movie based on a fairy tale, so that should be cute. We'll find out more tonight.
