Cookies Are Wonderful, Cookies Are Fantastic

Of course everyone knows that NASA's Opportunity rover is up on Mars looking around at everything there. Recently a jelly doughnut appeared. No, not really. It seems to be a rock that looks like a jelly doughnut. Or is is something other than a rock? How could a rock move from place to place? It wasn't there and then it was. So, could it be a Martian? I don't think we will ever find out. And besides that, Stephen, in a split moment of utter lack of impulse control, destroyed any hope we might have had for diplomatic ties with Mars and Martians.

As if that wasn't depressing enough, Air Force officers at a Montana nuclear missile base are having problems with drugs and cheating, mainly that they are doing both of those things. Stephen explained it all in Tip/Wag. He also told us that that dog and pony show, The Westminster Kennel Club show, is now letting plain old regular mutts in. I don't like to use that word since after all, we all know what dog spelled backwards is. (Dogs are special.) But Stephen did report on it so I am too. But all was forgiven once Stephen brought out a cute, cute dog. Good doggie.

How about this idea? Use the trainers from Westminster Kennel Club to train those people who are up in Montana. I think those Westminster people could teach them a thing or two about obedience. Maybe they just need to run around a bit and work off some extra energy. And then the dogs could go to Montana and, and... No. That is not a good idea. Ignore this paragraph.

Stephen had a guest on last night to talk about a book he wrote. He does that a lot. Almost every show he has someone on who has just written a book and they talk about it. It's almost like a habit of Stephen's. Last night's guest was Charles Duhigg talking about the book, "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business." This looks like a book that I will go out and buy. Seems quite interesting.

Did you know that about 40% to 45% of what we do every day is habit? It's true because Charles Duhigg said it to Stephen last night. And those percentages are from a survey, so that tells you for sure it is true. By knowing that what we are doing is a habit, and by knowing what reward we expect to get from that habit, we can change our habits and turn bad habits into good habits.

@PrezBillyJeff = @BillClinton

I have been trying to make this post 140 characters and still get everything in from Wednesday's show, but I have finally given up. Since so much time has gone by, I'll make it short, just not short enough to be a tweet. Twitter is very powerful and can send Wall Street into chaos. But it's also fun as we saw when ChelChel, ColbColb and PBJ had an interesting back and forth conversation. Bill Clinton is busy working on the Clinton Foundation and yet he still has time to talk with Stephen if only by appearing, seemingly, on Stephen's wall. Everyone who has been following @PrezBillyJeff should now start following@BillClinton. Stephen Colbert is following @BillClinton. And Bill Clinton sent his second tweet: "Excited to join @ChelseaClinton and my good friend @StephenAtHome."

In news that is so exciting for basically the whole world, for Mars, and even for our Solar System, Stephen highlighted the recent accomplishments of NASA. So many people love Science that NASA's website ran out of internet tubes and NASA's website crashed. It is so great to see President John F. Kennedy's dreams finally realized.

Stephen's guest was Danica Patrick. It was interesting, but I was so hoping for a race between Danica and Stephen. So, we didn't get to see that, but I will say that Danica's car now looks Marvelous after she appeared on The Colbert Report.

Simple

To honor Thursday night's guest, I will keep this post very simple.

Asteroids. NASA wants to lasso an asteroid. I have a better idea. Lasso asteroids and haul them to Pluto. Glue them to the surface and make Pluto bigger. It's time to make Pluto a planet again and this might help it achieve its former glory.

Should pot be legal? This will have to be decided in Nancy Reagan vs. Cheech and Chong.

In New York, or the Big Apple as some call it, costumed characters are behaving badly, so much so that Shrek had to give some advice to Elmo.

Stephen's guest last Thursday was Cass Sunstein. His book "Simpler: The Future of Government" looks at ways to make government more streamlined. One way this has been done already is that the Food Pyramid has been changed to the Food Plate. Cass Sunstein says that instead of following a lot of confusing rules about what to eat and how much to eat, just see that your plate is about half fruits and vegetables and that should do a good job of making sure you are have a balanced diet.

Fiscal Cliff

I know what you're thinking. Curiosity has landed on Mars and fell off the Fiscal Cliff. No, you're jumping ahead to tonight's guest and getting that confused with what Congress is doing.

First things first. Contraception. August 1 was a day to celebrate, ... or not, depending on who you are. After taking quite a few birth control pills (Stephen is one of the hottest women in the world), Stephen suggested a simpler plan for ladies is just to think of Mitch McConnell. I guess what Stephen is suggesting is something similar to a cold shower.

I was not paying close enough attention to the segment on the Economy, so I may have gotten stuff mixed up. I think what Stephen said is that some guy named Grover Norquist will push chickens off the Fiscal Cliff if anyone tries to shave him. Like I said, I might have that wrong. Perhaps a better explanation can be found here from Ezra Klein. It kind of worries me that Stephen was willing to so easily make some sacrifices last night. I think He Who Must Not Be Shaved has way too much power.

With the Olympics going on still, we got to see another segment of the Stephen Colbefrajilympic Expealacoverage '012. Gymnastics was the sport du jour. I was disappointed not to see good photos and video of what happened. What I did see was a bunch of letters and envelopes. Something about Olympic lawyers and "cease and desist" showing of footage of the games. Darn. Luckily, Stephen was able to accurately portray women's gymnastic without any worry about legal sanctions.Such form. Such speed. And she stuck the landing!

Speaking of landing, Curiosity! That's right, Curiosity is heading to Mars. You can watch live at 10:31 PDT. (11:31 in Mountain Time, 12:31 Central, 1:31 New York Time if I have my time zones correct.) More information over here at Wikipedia.

Oh, yeah, the guest. Well, NASA astronaut John Grunsfeld showed up to talk a little bit with Stephen about getting to Mars. Pretty exciting stuff! Planetary travel and all. You can go to the main NASA website page and spend hours looking at Earth, the Solar System (my personal favorite set of planets), the Universe and more. Be sure to go there soon and see if you don't recognize a certain Image of the Day person. If he's not there, try the "View Image Gallery" button and look for someone with the initials S.C.

Colbert in Outer Space

Well not exactly in outer space, but he is promoting it. I found this video of Stephen doing a PSA for NASA.

There's also other interesting videos you can watch about space stuff such as other planets, our moon, comets and other things that are literally out of this world.

Brilliant Not Manipulative

Tonight it seemed like the show was an hour long. There was lots of stuff!

So far, 53,000 people have responded and told Stephen what the Colbert Super PAC stands for. And because Stephen believes that Democracy stands for one man, one vote, and one dollar, Stephen had all the results compiled that took into account how much money people had donated. Some of the important things people think the Colbert Super PAC stand for are:

Health
Education
People
Government
Rights
Care
Tax

Stephen needs to incorporate all those ideas into advertisements and so he turned to Dr. Luntz, or Frank, as Stephen called him. If you choose your words correctly, you can influence how people think. For example "energy exploration" not "oil drilling". And "climate change" not "global warming". Stephen was impressed and said it is "brilliant" and not "manipulative."

Frank has a lot of practice using just the right word to get people to think or believe what he wants them to. (Or what Frank's clients want people to believe.) Here's the list of Eleven Words for 2011 that you probably will hear as we head into the 2012 elections:

1. Imagine
2. No excuses
3. I get it
4. If you remember only one thing
5. Uncompromising integrity
6. The simple truth
7. Believe in better
8. Real-time
9. You decide
10. You deserve
11. Let's get to work

Go read the article "The Eleven Words for 2011" to find out which one is all about truthiness! (I did notice that "I am Not a Witch" was NOT one of the Eleven Words.) And someone should tell Frank that "If you remember only one thing" is actually six words, not one word.

Frank told Stephen some important things to do to communicate with the people. Number one is Listen. And then for Stephen's benefit, he repeated it. Number one is Listen. He also told Stephen to focus, but not so much that he looked scary. It didn't take very long before Stephen had mastered how to pretend to look really sincere.

Another important lesson for Stephen to learn is what to do if he makes a really big mistake or does something wrong. (Never mind that Stephen does not make mistakes and that he does not ever do something that is wrong.) The advice from Frank is to say these three things:

1. I'm sorry.
2. I made a mistake.
3. Forgive me.

Dr. Frank Luntz has written books, the latest one being "Win." His parting words to Stephen were:

"You're dangerous."

Moving on. > > > > > > >

The guest tonight was actually four people who are just out of this world. Well they were out of this world when the were the crew of the last Space Shuttle mission. That's right, none other than Commander Chris Ferguson, Colonel Doug Hurley, Colonel Rex Walheim, and Dr. Sandra Magnus. With the Space Shuttle program ending, we will have to hitch a ride with Russia if we want to go to outer space. The cost of that is around $63 million! Stephen recommended that they check with Priceline. After all, it's Captain Kirk on those commercials.

So, wow, a really interesting show tonight and you might want to go look at it online over at Colbert Nation. You can see NASA's Greatest Moments which had very little to do with NASA and more to do with science fiction and popular culture. Plus you could find out what gift Stephen received from the astronauts, or should I say "astronuts?"

Houston, We Have a Colbert

Flying Toasters. Well not quite.

Stephen Colbert announced on tonight's Colbert Report that he has been invited to Houston for Astronaut Training!

Thank You NASA.

Stephen will be in Houston in May to undergo the astronaut training and also to show them his right stuff.

In an unrelated matter, Stephen will now be selling a generic form of his famous Formula 401. It's called Formula 01 Liquid Genetic Material, or Daddy Butter as he calls it. The only reason is because other corporations may start selling a generic form, so he wanted to compete with himself before they competed with him.

As with all his pharmaceuticals, you just know it will have that Stephen Colbert proud stamp of quality. Generally speaking, it's a generic genetic gem.
