I always wonder where Stephen is and what he is doing when the The Colbert Report goes on hiatus. I mean, it's not like he consults with me before making his plans. However, through diligent research and fact finding, and also watching TV and looking on the Internet, I found out what he did last night.
He was at the 68th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner. I imagine my invitation was lost in the mail. Stephen Colbert was the Keynote Speaker. In case you would like to read some of his best jokes from that dinner or even listen to his speech you can find it over at Huffington Post.

JFK
We find out from Stephen the best way to learn about Foreign Policy and World Economics. Go on a luxury cruise the way Newt Gingrich did. That's how Newt researched the current situation in Greece. It makes me want to study global finance because I think I could get used to the "classroom" if you know what I mean.
While Ron Paul is busy getting a calendar made for 2012, complete with very attractive young women for each month, some of the other presidential candidates are declaring their support for waterboarding.
Stephen talked about recent reports of police using pepper spray on protesters. He has no problem with that because pepper spray is not that bad. He even had quotes to back up this belief. But sometimes just saying something is not good enough. A demonstration is much better. Stephen is just the man to be willing to back up his words with action. He demonstrated right on his show how perfectly harmless pepper spray is.
"Jimmy, send in the 10 year-old boy!" It was a good demonstration. It went about the way I expected it would. I'm just glad he didn't demonstrate waterboarding.
Chris Matthews was on the show tonight for the interview. He has written another book, maybe you've already heard about it. "Jack Kennedy - Elusive Hero." Most of us know that John F. Kennedy was the 35th President and that he was assassinated. Some even know he was a war hero. But there is so much more about Kennedy that is truly important in understanding his life. The book by Chris Matthews does sound interesting and intriguing. So, now I should decide if I want a calendar or a book in my Christmas Stocking this year.
As a special treat tonight, Stephen read a bedtime story. It had all the usual characters but their names were quite confusing to me.
Note: Chris Matthews was on The Colbert Report back when Donald Pellview was filling in for Stephen. You can read that post here.

Building a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow
Well of course tonight Stephen talked about the news that neither Mike Huckabee nor The Donald (Donald Trump not Donald Pellview) is running for GOP nomination for president. Chris Matthews put it this way,"Trump, bump, hump, dump.
But the big news is Stephen Colbert! He did go to the FEC (Federal Election Commission) on his birthday - May 13. He was there in Washington D.C. to drop off his request for a SuperPAC. He spoke briefly on the steps of FEC and reminded people that he was standing on the same spot where George Washington stood 250 years ago to get his permission way back then to form a SuperPac.
He compared it to standing at an American Crossroads, not to be confused with Karl Rove's American Crossroads. ( If that link doesn't work, try here or here. I've been having trouble getting that link to work right, so be patient.)
The crowd, and it was crowded, chanted that famous of famous mottoes with him: Building a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. And while there may be cynics that will claim Tomorrow never comes, thanks to his lawyer, Trevor Potter, Tomorrow just got one day closer.
A while back, a young man gave Stephen $10 so that Stephen could accomplish what was on a list that the man also gave Stephen. That man was Ben Donaldsonson and Stephen lost the list. But it inspired Stephen to do the right thing and for $1, people could shake Stephen's hand. The response was overwhelming and Stephen had to start putting the dollar bills in his mouth. (Does he know where that money has been? Take it from me, you don't want to know.)
Stephen collected a whopping grand total of $31. That is, for lack of another word, impressive. Truly Stephen Colbert is willing to put his money where his mouth is.
Unfortunately, the FEC has 60 days to make its ruling. That's a long time to wait. Let's hope we get the decision sooner.
Moving on, tonight's guest was Alison Klayman talking about her documentary "Ai Weiwei, Never Sorry" which is about Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. You probably know the Birdnest that was built for the Olympics in China. He helped design the Birdnest. You can read a lot of information about Ai Weiwei at Wikipedia. You should go take a look. He has really neat art stuff and it's a very interesting story.

Donald Pellview

Stephen had his understudy, Donald Pellview, do the show tonight for him. I don't know why Stephen could not do it, perhaps he had a dentist appointment or something like that. I should correct this a bit. Stephen was able to do the last minute of the show, so he was able to thank Donald Pellview and say "Good Night" but that was about the extent of his talent for the show tonight.
Donald Pellview did a great job. He interviewed Chris Matthews of Hardball with Chris Matthews fame. I must admit, Chris Matthews does seem to know his stuff. Chris Matthews and Donald Pellview talked about John F. Kennedy, what with it being the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's inaugural speech. JFK had that famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy also created the Peace Corps, with Sargent Shriver (Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr.) as the first director.
All in all, Donald Pellview did a wonderful job as understudy for Stephen. He is just as handsome, just as intelligent, and a tad bit more comical. Let's hope we get to see more of Donald Pellview in the future.
* Note: Photo is not actually of Donald Pellview. It is an understudy photo of Donald Pellview.
