Wrapping up last Thursday's show and the last episode of 2012 it is time for bid adieu to Ham Rove. In a strange turn of events though, his memory will live on. You see, Stephen got a letter from The Ham Rove Memorial Fund, of which he, Stephen Colbert, surprisingly is on the Board! In this letter which Stephen sent to himself, it says that they recently received an anonymous donation of $773,704,83. This is amazing because it is exactly the same amount of money that was left over in the Colbert Super PAC. The letter came from P.O. Box Bite Me. Stephen suggested that this donation go to Unicef but the other Board members found out that Unicef is the name of Stephen's yacht.
Therefore, the money will be divided up as follows:
$125,000 to Donors Choose Sandy Relief Fund
$125,000 to Team Rubicon's Sandy Outreach
$125,000 to Habitat for Humanity to build houses for storm victims
$125,000 to Yellow Ribbon Fund
The remaining money, per Ham Rove's wishes, will be split between the Center for Responsive Politics and The Campaign Legal Center, but if, and only if, some conditions are met. Conference rooms for those two organizations will be renamed. One gets to be The Colbert Super PAC Memorial Conference Room and the other gets to the The Ham Rove Memorial Conference Room.
Stephen's guest for the last show of 2012 was Sister Simone Campbell, of the famous Nuns on a Bus. They had a very spirited interview. I have come to the conclusion that Sister Simone won the interview by a few points. Stephen tried his best, claiming that Jesus wanted him to prosper. Sister Simone came back at him with the story of how the rich brought presents to the baby Jesus and left them at the manger.
Stephen did compliment her that she was named one of Atlantic's Brave Thinkers of 2012. He went on to note that she publicly disagreed with the Pope, yes - that Pope (!) - on issues such as contraception and all male priesthood. He also commented that he had no way to be sure she was a nun since she was wearing just normal clothes. However, she has a pin on her lapel, what Stephen called a "Nun Badge."
In her never ending quest to help the poor, she also explained why she "took on" Paul Ryan and his budget. This is the budget which Paul Ryan said was informed by his faith. She said we should, in a pluralistic culture, be all about community: "We have to let go of our stuff to hold hands with each other."
Thursday's show was only 30 minutes long as usual, but it seemed like Stephen packed a lot in to end the year. We had another musical treat for the Christmas season. Musicians Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples, Sean Lennon and members of the Harlem Gospel Choir all appeared to sing John Lennon's "So This is Christmas."

Nothing Up My Sleeve
Stephen started the show by demonstrating his creative genius for finding answers. Then he endorsed Herman Cain, or was he joking?
I'll explain. Herman Cain recently said that as president he would build a 20 foot high fence along the Mexican border and he would electrify it. (Most likely he is trying to have a better fence than what Michele Bachmann has planned.) Ah, but then he explained he was joking. No wait, then he said it might be a good idea and he hasn't really given up on that idea. So, depending on whether you like his ideas or not, he is joking or else he's not joking. This is true, I'm not joking about it.
And then in what can only be called some sort of horrifying Halloween scare tactic, Stephen told us that there's talk of limiting potatoes in school lunches. He explained, in great detail, why this would be bad, especially for young middle school boys who have only Tater Tots to sustain them, not just nutritionally but also emotionally.
In other food related news, we learned that Yum oops I mean Yum! Brands is applying for inclusion in the Food Stamp program. Currently, food stamps are only supposed to be used to buy food at grocery stores and not at fast food restaurants. Stephen weighed in on the issue and most likely he will weigh more after he weighed in on the issue. (Okay. He ate some food from Taco Bell. It's a joke. Or if you don't think it's funny, then it's not a joke.)
Stephen explained that Yum! includes Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silver's and Pizza Hut. But it sort of does and sort of doesn't. You see, in January they put a "For Sale" sign on Long John Silver's and also A&W. And in September they announced that they had agreements to sell them, so right now it's a little bit confusing as to which restaurants are included at Yum!.
My feeling is that the food stamps should continue to be used at grocery stores only. If you let these fast food restaurants accept food stamps, then what would be next? Would all restaurants start accepting food stamps? Letting fast food restaurants accept food stamps for payment is just opening up a can of worms. Yikes, would that be the next thing that people could buy with food stamps?
Stephen's guest was Steven Pinker talking about his book, "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined." He had some statistics which he shared with us. Statistics are always good. Prehistoric tribes killed each other at a rate of about 15%, but today, it's much less than a percentage point. Back in the Middle Ages, you were about 35% more likely to be murdered than you are today! To sum up and tie it all together, Stephen shared with Steven a nice example of irony.
The most exciting part of the show was at the very end. Yes, I know that is usually the saddest because the show is almost over, but there's a good reason. Stephen announced that "Tonight is the 6th year anniversary of The Colbert Report. Hard to believe because it was actually last night."
Whew, I thought I had it wrong on yesterday's post, but it actually was October 17.
Here's the part where you go to Colbert Nation for a great opportunity. Look for the link to Colbert Photo Show for Auction. Click on that for more information. You can bid on photos from The Colbert Report and help out Donors Choose.
And finally, you are probably wondering if Stephen unveiled his newest portrait of himself. And you are probably wondering if he has anything up his sleeve. Well, yes he did and yes he does!

More than halfway there in less than 24 hours! So far, $54,110 of the $100,000 has been donated and 10,822 user photos have been uploaded for the Stephen & Melinda Gates Foundation. The money will go to Donors Choose.
If you want to see "Your Face Here" go to Stephen & Melinda Gates Foundation and upload a photo of your face. Do it for the kids.
Oops, update. In the few minutes it took me to write the first two paragraphs, the numbers have now increased to $54,530 and 10,906.
So, keep those faces coming!

Upload Your Face
Rick Parry of Perry fame did not do well in his recent GOP debate. He was trying to show that Romney has had evolving opinions over the years, but all Parry did was come out looking like a fool. Stephen was reminded of someone else and showed us the clip of George W. Bush flubbing the famous "Fool Me Once" quote. It most certainly does not look very professional for someone like Rick Parry or George W. Bush to flub up when speaking. Too bad that Stephen tripped over his tongue when he was telling us all about it.
Melinda Gates was the guest tonight. She and her husband Bill Gates do have a foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and it's worth looking at even if all you do is wait to see the photo of Melinda with Stephen. But you should read a little bit about what they are doing while you are there.
There is also the Stephen and Melinda Gates Foundation and you should go look at that too. It's to help children in two ways. One way is to eradicate polio and malaria in Africa and the second is to improve education in the United States.
Melinda spent most of the time talking about education. She said that having an effective teacher at the head of the classroom is the single most important thing to do for education. Here's how to spot a great teacher.
1. Manages class well
2. Gets students to think critically
3. Explains the lesson again if some students need to hear about it again.
Stephen asked if the plan in Wisconsin to de-certify teachers and cut their benefits helps kids in any way. While neither one came out and said it was a poor idea, I got the idea that Stephen and Melinda both thought it did not help kids.
And here's how we all can help. Go to
www.stephenandmelindagatesfoundation.org
and upload your photo. If 20,000 people submit their photo, they will donate $100,000 to DonorsChoose.org. And here's something I did not know. Stephen is on the Board of DonorsChoose!

Friday Friday
So, here it is Saturday and I'm writing about Friday. And with good reason. As promised, Stephen Colbert made a grand appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to sing "Friday". It was magnificent. Jimmy Fallon joined in with his usual exuberance. Then magically, Taylor Hicks appeared, bursting onto the stage. Wow, then came the Knicks City Dancers. The Roots were in grand form as always. The audience added as much enthusiasm as you typically see on The Colbert Report.
It was, as Jimmy said, the moment we've been waiting for. Stephen Colbert was a man of Jimmy's word.
With generous donations of $1, $5, even $8, they raised over $86,000 for Donors Choose.
Wonderful!
Now, my lingering question. When will Stephen put out a CD of songs? Yes there was the Christmas stuff, but something with year-long appeal. Stephen is a great, no, greatest singer and the world deserves to hear his golden tones.

I Joined Colbert PAC
Stephen was so convincing that I just had to go to COLBERTPAC.com and join.
Now I can claim to be one of a group of millions who are
"Making a better tomorrow, tomorrow."
My whole life has changed since joining. I feel older. I know I'm getting smarter. Every time I see Michele Bachmann or Tim Pawlenty or Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee, I can smile because I know that I am in the PAC that is better than all those PACs put together.
But enough about me. On to the important stuff. Stephen found out last night that you can use PAC money to pay for jet travel. And that you need to comply with rules and fill out forms and things of that nature, but no one has gone to jail for making boo boos about PAC stuff. So, that sounds intriguing.
I mentioned other people who have PACs and I did not know, but huckpac means "out after Iowa" in the Klingon language. Stephen talked about Tim Pawlenty and his thunderous handshake last night. Well, you can do amazing things with audio-visual equipment nowadays. oops. I guess it's called technology now, not AV. You might remember that Stephen has aired the Pawlenty PAC ad and then determined that Pawlenty is running for the Brawny man. You probably haven't seen, but Pawlenty, who is from Minnesota, has all of a sudden developed a deep south accent when he is speaking in states south of Minnesota.
But moving on. I just think someone needs to talk about this Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert BFF situation. (That's Best Friends Forever, if you don't know.) Both of them have talked about being BFFs for 6 months. That's not exactly forever!!!
Regardless of that problem though, go to DonorsChoose.org/Fallon-Colbert-Project anyway and donate. It helps kids, so that's good.
And then hopefully soon we can get past both of them having to say, "I never said that."

I Never Said That
Apparently I can not read Stephen's mind. Hypnotizing didn't seem to work either. I didn't see that coming! I will have to work harder at these skills and try again in the future.
Moving on.
I'm sure you all remember when Stephen told us that Jimmy Fallon will match $26,000 of his own money to benefit Donors Choose.
However, on Jimmy Fallon's show last night, Jimmy said, "I never said that."
And this would be what we call a conundrum. The only possible solution was for Stephen to go on Jimmy's show. And he did. He did not stay long and it wasn't a pretty sight.
After Stephen quickly exited the show, Jimmy admitted the only way to come to a reasonable solution was for everyone to help by sending money by Friday. If enough money comes in, Jimmy promised, Promised!!!, that Stephen will come on the Jimmy Fallon Show and sing Rebecca Black's song - "Friday" - with Roots.
Cut back to Stephen Colbert where he is surprised by this singing engagement and said, "This comes as a surprise to me!" or something very similar.
For two people who are supposedly BFFs for six months, the friendship does not seem that strong. I'm just saying.
What everyone needs to do, according to Jimmy Fallon, is to go to
donorschoose.org/fallon-colbert-project and donate.
Or not as Stephen would say. You can also go to colbertnation for more information.

Yeah Baby I'm Back
Not me of course, but Stephen is back on my TV and I assume on yours as well.
First things first. Japan. You can help my texting
REDCROSS to 90999

go to American Red Cross to donate.
Lots on the show last night. Stephen mentioned that the last time his guest, Steve Martin, was on the show, Stephen Colbert's portrait was auctioned with DonorsChoose benefiting and providing arts education in public schools. Stephen discussed art with Simone de Pury and you really should go to Colbert Nation and watch that episode. It's good and also you can watch and listen to Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. Great Bluegrass music, and we all need more of that in our daily lives.
The highlight of the show has got to be the last 5 seconds when Stephen, not Steve, played the first 9 notes of Dueling Banjos on the banjo. Now that is talent. So go watch the whole episode if you did not see it last night.
