Today is the day. Tonight is the night. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
How long we have waited! If the The Colbert Report was still on the TV machine, would that Stephen Colbert give this Stephen Colbert the famous Colbert Bump? I think so. Will there be unexpected shenanigans on the show? Most likely there will be.
I am holding my breath until the show starts tonight. I don't think anyone will argue with my prediction for Stephen's first night as host of the The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
It will be HUGE.

Now we know what would motivate Stephen to become a runner - a throng of people behind him chanting "Stephen. Stephen. Stephen."
In political news, sadly, Stephen disagreed with fellow conservative Peggy Noonan, when she wrote, "It's time to admit the Romney Campaign is an incompetent one."
"WRONG, Peggy!" shouted Stephen. "That time was six months ago." He went on to explain what redistribution means. "You pay taxes into a single federal agency that pools it and redistributes it across the country to build roads and bridges, sometimes in states you don't live in."
It's been too long since we've been treated to The Word, so it was with gladness that I listened to Stephen talk about "Ask Not." What we learned is that Mitt Romney will continue to tell crowds what he won't do, e.g. he won't take God off our coins. Whew - that would take forever. Do you know how many coins are in circulation? Have you ever tried to scratch God off even one penny? It takes a long time. But back to The Word. Once Mitt Romney has told us everything he won't do, we will finally be able to figure out what he will do. I like that because I like puzzles. You know, sort of like having crossword puzzles and word searches for his supporters to figure out what his policies will be.
Guess who just got married! Wait, that's misleading. Guess who we are just finding out may have been married. Stephen's good friend Jesus. Stephen is happy that JC is married, but a little bit sad that his buddy is no longer a carefree single guy who can do whatever he wants. Stephen expects things will change, including whether he goes to church on Sunday or watches the game with JC. You can almost figure out which one Mrs. Christ will insist on.
World class violinist Itzhak Perlman joined Stephen as the guest. Stephen was excited to meet with a fellow "master of his craft." He played on Ed Sullivan when he was 13. He has Grammys, Emmys, has been at Carnegie Hall and Sesame Street. Next week he will perform at the opening gala of New York Philharmonic's 171st season. (And yes, Stephen did a great job of reading from his notes.) Itzhak Perlman apologized to Stephen for the wrong notes, about three, that he has played in his career. Interestingly enough, Itzhak Perlman got his first violin at about age three, threw it away because it didn't sound like the violins he was used to hearing, and then got another at age four and started playing then. So, quite young. Stephen asked when people started realizing his great musical talent. "Oh, about a year ago," was the quick response.
Stephen got a little bit "concerned" about the state of classical music in the world and country today, but Itzhak Perlman calmed his down. After performing on the "The Colbert Report," Stephen said that violins will get the "Colbert Bump." (That's a relief. After turning the Bump off a few days ago, apparently Stephen, or somebody, must have rebooted it.) At first Itzhak Perlman declined to play, but that was just for one or two seconds before he agreed to play for the studio audience and the larger TV and internet audience.
We did get to hear a performance by Itzhak Perlman. It was wonderful. I watched closely to see how it's done. Now I am going to go out and buy a violin and play the same song. It sure looked pretty easy. Only four strings. Just move the bow back and forth over the strings with the right hand while holding down the strings with the left hand. So, piece of cake. Nothing to it. Yeah, right.

Look What He's Done
Stephen was disappointed, or rather should I say outraged, that at the VMA the band fun. was beaten by the boy band One Direction.
"Boo. Boooo."
Stephen expressed his opinion. He talked about the illogical premise of the song, "You Don't Know You're Beautiful." That's what makes you beautiful??? But they just told her and so now she knows it therefore she's no longer beautiful so obviously then she wouldn't know she's beautiful. Well, Stephen just calls it Mobius Pop and moves on to more important stuff. Oh, and in protest, I'm only posting a link to fun. and not a link to One Direction. Hope this helps Stephen feel better.
Night Three of the Omabathon featured Barack Obama giving his speech. I got the impression that Barack Obama was so good that Stephen was impressed! However, one of the claims that Barack Obama made was exactly what Republicans have been working so hard these last four years (not exactly four years, but close enough) to disprove: "I'm the President."
Stephen put it all on the line and bet that we will never hear Mitt Romney say those words.
Liberal pie in the sky ideas showed through in the speech, ideas such as auto workers should be able to afford to buy an auto, Boeing workers should be able to afford a 747 and McDonald's cashiers should be able to afford a burger. (Fantasy World!)
The Conventions are over now. What have we learned? Hispanics are worth their weight in gold. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are as different as black and white. We haven't had such a clear choice since Crystal Pepsi which Stephen said is as current as the Republican Platform.
Even with the differences, though, the candidates did agree on some things. They agreed this is a great nation. They agreed the future is important. The agreed we need jobs. And they both blessed these United States of America. Republicans frowned and said that our country needed help and look what Obama did while the Democrats turned that frown upside down and said that our country needed help and look what Obama did. (If you want to see what he did, check it out here.)
In a surprise development, Stephen was forced to shut down the famous "The Colbert Bump." As you may have noticed, this week is repeat week. So, tonight is this very episode that you are reading about here! You can see Stephen shut down the Bump; if you can handle it, that is.
The guest was (and will be yet again tonight) Ed Rendell, former Governor of Pennsylvania. He talked about his recent book, "A Nation of Wusses - How America's Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great." Stephen and Ed Rendell talked about Democrats. "We believe one thing we should do is take care of each other and our most vulnerable citizens." The crowd applauded when Ed Rendell said that. Stephen countered with, "Obama threw around 'citizenship' like it has responsibilities." Ed agreed. It is as if Obama was saying not only am I a citizen, but this is what citizenship means and the Republicans aren't doing those citizenship things. Obviously, Stephen did not like those types of comments by the President.
Ed also talked about the little guy that Republicans are afraid to stand up to, the one that no one voted for, who, like a modern day Wizard of Oz, pulls the strings and levers. Now, I'm not going to say Grover Norquist's name here, so you'll just have to figure out who Ed was talking about.
Stephen reminded his audience not to be wusses.

People Chant My Name
On February 22, 2012, 2 people came to an agreement. If Stephen Colbert would support the DISCLOSE Act, then Nancy Pelosi would encourage Democrats to come on Stephens "Better Know A District" segment. Stephen has supported DISCLOSE and therefore Stephen was honored to do a segment with Missouri Congressman Russ Carnahan. He currently represents the 3rd District of Missouri which will become the 1st District in next election. I'm assuming that it got moved up to 1st place as a result of getting The Colbert Bump.
The two men talked about St. Louis, beer, corn, marriage and other important issues. Congressman Carnahan was able to keep up with Stephen and not be outshone. Kudos to him. (There's a reason why some members of Congress are afraid to be interviewed by Stephen Colbert, but Russ Carnahan is one of the brave members.
Stephen had a short segment about food. He complained about the FDA sitting around inspecting his meat. He complained about Meatless Mondays. And then he complained about people eating carrots, potatoes and watermelon. Well, people have different opinions on all of this. Hopefully some good can come out of all of this and by that I mean, when is Stephen going to write a cookbook?
Stephen's guest was Chris Hayes and while he did get dressed up for the interview, he did not look as fabulous as Stephen. Chris Hayes is host for Up with Chris Hayes, Editor At Large for The Nation, and wrote the book, Twilight of the Elites, America After Meritocracy. Stephen said that the future is bright, he has an iPad and that people chant his name. Chris Hayes doesn't wear a tie. But, there is a great song just waiting to be written by Woody Guthrie inside the verbosity of the book. Stephen suggested we all go out and buy it and read it. He thinks there might be vampires in it.

Is Stephen Colbert Swedish?
Barack Obama, announced he will not be deporting illegal immigrants, brought here as children who have a high school diploma and no criminal record. Oh, great. Now the doors are wide open for people who are already here. Obama does already have a great reputation among Latino voters with quite an impressive lead in the polls. Plus even among GOP circles, it is being called the right thing to do. Stephen however thinks he is pandering and yes, even trying to get re-elected. Just look at that burro the Democrats use for their party. Stephen suggests that if you hit it, candy and free health care will fall out. If Mitt Romney were the president, he would veto the Dream Act and fully expect that people would simply self-deport. (Didn't they do that in Star Trek once? No. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Never mind.)
Full disclosure: Stephen is a member of the White House Press Corps Reserves and he can heckle with the best of them. That would be Neil Munro who heckled the president and was called out on it by no less than Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly, Chris Wallace and Don Lemon.
Stephen has the best audience in the world. That's a fact because Stephen said it. And they need to help Stephen with the ongoing diplomatic talks with Sweden. Stephen can speak Swedish fluently and he likes to Tweet. Therefore, everyone should go to Colbert Nation and help him get his rightful chance to be the official Tweeter for a Week for Sweden. It is sort of up in the air now as to whether he will be able to claim his chance. Here is what Sweden has said about this topic.
"People who are not Swedish citizens cannot take over the account, no yet anyway...we have a very long list already. Colbert will have to wait."

Here's the thing. Already Stephen has given Sweden's Twitter Account the famous Colbert Bump. Heck, tourism will probably double in the next year for Sweden just because of him. Well, stay tuned. Hopefully Sweden will see the light and give Stephen the account for a week.
Paul Krugman was the guest and had lots and lots of interesting things to say. He does have a book out also. "End This Depression Now." He also has written many other books and has a whole bunch of awards. An interesting tidbit that he talked about. You often hear politicians claim that government doesn't create jobs. Ha! Tell that to fire fighters, police officers, and teachers. Krugman said that if we rehired laid off workers from those thee groups, we would be a long way towards ending this depression. He also talked about Ireland, with 14% unemployment. He called Ireland Romney's Economics in practice. Something to think about if we care about our economy.

E=mc Scared
Congress is getting dumber. Ahhhhh. What does that mean? It just means that the speeches they deliver now are geared towards a 10th grade audience rather than the previous 11th grade audience. Personally I think that Congress is just trying to be more inclusive and get younger people interested in all the wonderful things that Congress has accomplished these past few years.
The Word for Monday's show was Sink Or Swim. (Technically Word Word Word.) The seas are rising and are anticipated to rise a meter, which is a metric measurement and so we may not have to worry about it here in the mathematically progressive USA. However, that's quite a bit of water. If you have ocean-front property, you may be in trouble. Luckily, North Carolina Republicans have come up with a sweet solution. They simply want to outlaw the data. That's right, they have a new bill that would outlaw the climate models. (Sea, no evil.) This is a brilliant solution. Another would be to stick your head in the sand. Of course, you would want to have a friend nearby to tell you when the water is rising and getting too close to you.
BKAD, or Better Know a District, is one of Stephen's most patriotic segments of the show. By now he should have been able to breeze through all the Districts. Sadly, there are way too many that we don't know. In fact, there are whole states that we know absolutely nothing about. Stephen is of course fixing that. He made an agreement with Nancy Pelosi to support her Disclose Act. She, in return, would encourage Democratic Representatives to come on The Colbert Report to be interviewed by Stephen. It is proven fact that anyone on The Colbert Report gets the famous Colbert Bump.
So anyway, Stephen has two Democrats booked for this summer. Yea!!! But he needs more. That's where you come in. Head over to Colbert Nation. Do you see Stephen's smiling face up in the right hand corner? It says Better Know A District. Click on that. It's the Represent-O-Map 6000. Then click on your Congressional District. If you don't know your District, use the Search Box-Thingy 4500 below the map of the USA. Either click or search and you will get a nice photo of your Representative and a form email (the best kind) to send. Get your Representative on the show. Make him or her famous. Send your Representative an actual email. You can also view The Archives to see if your Representative was already better known.
The most popular Representative seems to be Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton which is interesting. As popular as she is, she has the worst voting record, having never cast a vote. It is a fascinating interview and valuable civics lesson. And we can see Stephen flatter himself.
To remind us all of what BKAD is all about, Stephen interviewed Representative John Lewis for BKAD and also as the guest. Representative John Lewis is from Georgia's 5th District. John Lewis knew the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr since he was 18 and John Lewis was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. In 1965, he led marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in a historical event that came to be known as Bloody Sunday. Stephen mentioned that he also was at the 1963 March on Washington and may have been the youngest attendee since he was with his mother in that she was pregnant with him.
Stephen and Representative Lewis also discussed the new book that John Lewis has written - "Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change." You can get this book at most bookstores or download it from iTunes.

Kermit the Frog
Stephen started off tonight with just a quick reference to something Rick Santorum seems to be in favor of - making teleprompters illegal.
"See, I always believed that when you run for president of the United States, it should be illegal to read off a teleprompter."
That gets a laugh for him and it also seems to play well with Newt Gingrich supporters when Gingrich tells teleprompter jokes. I wonder if there are more important things to talk about, such as jobs maybe. And what would happen if a candidate used a teleprompter? Would they immediately go to jail without passing Go? And has Santorum really ALWAYS believed that? I remember my English teacher teaching us that we should never use the word "always" when we are writing something and that we should always avoid using the word "never" when writing something. So I'm a little bit skeptical that Santorum has always believed that. And if candidates can't use a teleprompter, will they be stuck using a Hand-o-prompter?
Time will tell with that issue, but in the meantime, more primaries are coming up. Voters in Louisiana are getting ready for the primary on March 24. (Important note - That is a Saturday.) Who is going to take the bayou? What better expert could Stephen get for an opinion on the Bayou State than that man about town, Colbert Report's Chief Swampland Political Analyst, Kermit the Frog. (Wild Applause. )
Stephen asked for Kermit's analysis of the GOP race. Kermit explained that he is just a frog and doesn't know much about politics but according to his schedule, he is here to tell everybody that, "his new movie The Muppets is coming out on Blu-ray and dvd on March 20." (More wild applause.)
Stephen kept pushing Kermit, even showing a video clip of "Mitt Romney" who was a regular on Sesame Street with Kermit. Again Kermit claims that he doesn't talk politics, that he considers himself an amphibitarian. He is not partisan. "Republicans, Democrats, Independents, all will enjoy the newest movie The Muppets coming out on Blu-ray and dvd on March 20."
Again, Stephen pushed Kermit, asking what he thought about Newt. Well, that really got Kermit going. He was upset that just because frogs and newts are amphibians, Kermit would of course know Newt. But finally, Kermit gave a really good analysis and Stephen let him put in a plug for The Muppets coming out on Blu-ray and dvd on March 20. The audience goes wild. Stephen Colbert goes wild, and Kermit the Frog goes wild. Yeaaaaa Yeaaaaa Yeaaaaaa.
I wonder if this is the first time a frog has gotten The Colbert Bump.
Keeping with the animal theme and moving right along, Monkey on the Lam. It's been a while since Stephen talked monkeys or anything remotely similar. Probably because he got talked into a banana Ponzi scheme by a monkey. Stephen gave him bananas, the monkey ate them and Stephen was supposed to make money. It sounded like a sure bet. (Apparently not!)
A gorilla, that's right, a gorilla is supposedly on the loose in Alabama. It's not known how many there are roaming around, but Stephen is concerned they may have voted in the Alabama Primary. This is good justification for Voter ID laws according to Stephen. Or, it might have been a bear. I'm sure we will hear more about all of these topics, gorillas, Voter ID, and bears from Stephen in the future.
Finally, Stephen had a person on tonight. Mark McKinnon was on to talk about No Labels. They have a 12-Step Program, including ideas such as:
1. No Budget, No Pay
2. Up or Down Vote on Presidential Appointments
3. Fix the Filibuster
8. No Pledge but the Oath of Office
and more really good ideas, ideas like, oh, talking to each other.
So go over and look at No Labels and see what you think.

You Got Bumped
Stephen recently had author Ann Patchett on the show and told her she would get the famous The Colbert Bump just by being on the show. She was the guest on Monday to talk about her bookstore, Parnassus Books and her latest book, "State of Wonder."
And now, according to the Tennessean.com, she did in fact get bumped!
Stephen can see into the future!

Tough As Nails

Stephen is back and he looks marvelous. He quickly quelled all rumors about being gone for a few days. The Colbert Report was not cancelled because he would soon announce his candidacy, it was not cancelled because he offended the Catholic Church, and he was not in rehab, and he did not have a nose job. But he does look marvelous, there's no denying that. He did say, however, that evidently having eleven children makes you tough as nails (confidential to a lovely lady).
On to politics. Mitt Romney trails Rick Santorum. And this with the Michigan Primary coming up soon. Perhaps Mitt should not have said we should let Detroit go bankrupt. ( Awkward.) In order to bump up his image, Mitt is bringing out The Donald, and if Trump is going to be Romney's surrogate, Stephen is ready and willing to be Trump's surrogate, complete with a tint job so that he looks like Trump. If you think Stephen is not able to be a surrogate of Romney's surrogate, you are wrong. He did a very convincing Trump impression.
Yes, Mitt is trailing in the polls, even though he was born in Michigan, and likes that the trees are not too tall and not too short but just the right height, and likes the lakes big and small and loves cars.
So, what does Stephen have to say about Rick Santorum? "I would say that he's come from behind, but Santorum is morally opposed to coming from behind."
To spice things up a bit, Stephen played some clips of Santorum talking about, oh, the president, and jobs, and the United States, and, well, here's what he said recently:
"This president, systematically, is doing everything he can to raise the price of energy in this country. He's shutting down all sorts of opportunities for us to drill for oil. This is what the president's agenda is. It's not about you. It's not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology."
And this a while back:
"This is not a political war at all. This is not a cultural war at all. This is a spiritual war and the father of lies has his sights on what you would think the father of lies, Satan, would have his sights on: A good, decent, powerful influential country - The United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age? There is no one else to go after other than the United States."
Rick Santorum August 29, 2008.
Stephen explained, as only Stephen can, the whole reasoning behind this in quite colorful terms and pictures. He also mentioned that other countries have, in fact, had such things as earthquakes, war, famine, etc. which do seem to be bad things. Go over to Colbert Nation and listen to Romney talk about trees and Santorum talk about theology.
But enough of politics. Stephen's guest tonight is an author and bookstore owner. Ann Patchett's most recent book is "State of Wonder." Her bookstore, Parnassus Books, is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Stephen compared Ann to Meg Ryan in the movie, "You've Got Mail" and talked about small independent bookstores getting gobbled up by large, corporate bookstores. Patchett says that people are coming back to the independent bookstores. They like the story hour for the kids. They like that the staff can actually recommend books that are tailored to what each customer wants.
And then, almost like dessert at the end of a meal, Stephen told her that she was getting the famous "Colbert Bump" just by being on the show tonight. He looked at the audience (live and in TV land) and said he wanted her book "State of Wonder" to register on Amazon tomorrow. Whoa... she wants it to register at ParnassusBooks.net where you can get it signed!
She had this interesting choice for Stephen when his next book comes out. He can come to Nashville, see his friends Jack White and Al Gore, have a party, drink a cocktail. The Goat Rodeo guys can come over and play some music. Then, the next day, Stephen can go over to Amazon with a Sharpie pen, cut open a carton of books, and sign them. Then he can see which of those he liked better.
He thanked her for coming on the show.
**Note: Unfortunately, trees in photo are not the right size, they are too tall. Apologies to Mitt Romney.

Troy called. I was excited at first thinking it was Troy from Community, but no, it was a professional fundraiser that called me. Typically with these types of calls, the person talks quite fast and this was no exception. I think he was going to send out some pledge forms and I should mail that back with a donation.
I always say "No" to phone solicitations like this because I get too many requests for donations anyway. There are plenty of local places I can donate to. There are plenty of well-known places I can donate to. And think about it. If you don't like getting these calls but you agree to donate, I guarantee you will get even more calls.
Details. It was to help out animals. That's good. But there were red flags, you know, things that seemed kind of hinky.
I asked for a website and he rattled the URL off but then said they don't take donations on the website. That seemed strange. Most charities, organizations, foundations, etc. are anxious to get funds in whatever way people are willing to donate. Perhaps he was just looking out for himself (a professional fundraiser) rather than the organization he was hired to get money for. Most likely he gets a commission and if the donation comes via the website, well no commission for him. And yet, there were plenty of "Donate Now" opportunities at the website he gave me, so yes they do actually accept donations at the website. I don't think he had the truthiness I would have expected from a good solid charity.
I did look at the website and that seemed a little hinky too. It seemed quite new based on the copyright date - 2011 - and some pages were "Coming Soon." I also found at least one instance of what seemed to be a note to the webmaster that should have been removed before that page went up live on their website.
They supposedly help animals and yet I could not find any place that I could tell them about animals that needed help. There's no details. I could not find their address listed on the website. I could not find them when I Googled them. (I did find similar sounding names, hmmm.)
Lots of photos but probably photos that you could get off the internet or purchase from those kind of services that provide generic photos for your website.
As I mentioned, their name is very, very similar to lots of other groups that showed up on Google. After the small amount of information on the phone, plus looking over their website, I realized that I still didn't know anything about them. Who are they? Not a single person's name. No board members. No staff members. Where are they? There's a map that shows where they are, but that could be a mailbox store or someone's apartment or office. Why no address where I could mail a check?
So, I'm not even going to give them publicity by saying what the name of the group is. Just the phone number. 877-897-9953. If they call you, beware. I do not give them the Colbert Bump.
Try these instead. There's a list over at Charity Navigator of many Animal Charities. You can look through the list, check the scores and websites of the groups and donate there. Or donate to your local animal charity.

Hot Coffee
Stephen did talk about Herman Cain's smoking ad tonight. Or should it be called Herman Cain's smiling ad? Well, whatever it's called, Stephen did give it some free air time. We got to see just how breezy the studio is, if you were paying close attention, that is. And we got to see how cool Stephen is. Of course, I'm sure he was just acting.
Even though Herman Cain constantly boasts about what a great businessman he is, his ads aren't as good as the ones that Stephen made for Cain 2012. But there is something quite disturbing about Herman Cain's ad. It's the music. In the background we hear "I Am America." Does that sound familiar? Think now....
I... Am... America. Yep. A certain book by that same title, "I Am America." Why doesn't Stephen have Herman Cain on the show to ask about this slap in the face? Oh, that's why. Herman Cain has chickened out twice so far. Well, yet another invitation was extended to Cain and if he does come on for the Colbert Bump, there will be a Smiling Contest. Oh, yes! And Stephen will win just like he did tonight when he gave us a preview.
But on to the Beverage Portion of the show. Hot Coffee. It refers to a documentary feature film about the woman who spilled hot coffee on herself and sued. You've heard of it (unless you live under a rock). And we keep hearing that's why we need tort reform.
Go watch the show to find out the real truth about, not tort reform but tort deform. Susan Saladoff was on the show tonight and discussed tort reform, hot coffee, and the 7th Amendment. Frivolous lawsuits are not a major problem, she says. The woman who sued was not trying to get rich. She only wanted the medical bills paid.
Anyway, the film won a whole bunch of awards. You probably should watch the film or at least watch the show over at Colbert Nation if you didn't catch it on TV.

Colbert Bump for Salvatore Purpura?
I Googled Salvatore Purpura last night while Stephen was talking about him on The Colbert Report. I wish I would have paid closer attention because I think there were only about 70 or so hits on Google for Purpura. I'm not 100% positive, but there weren't many hits for Purpura. Today there are about 4,690. The only thing thing that has changed in the last 24 hours is that Stephen talked about Salvatore on his show. And yes, Stephen did mention that Politico had scooped him.
But still, I think Stephen did give Salvatore Purpura the Colbert Bump. And all Purpura had to do to get the Colbert Bump was to quit working for Stephen.

Clap For Me, My Monkeys
Remember when Stephen told us that Herman Cain would be on Thursday's episode of The Colbert Report? That's right, this coming Thursday, July 28, pizza maker and presidential hopeful Herman Cain ..... actually won't be on because he has canceled.
Ouch. Not exactly a good plan if you are tyring to get The Colbert Bump. There's a "scheduling conflict." I hope that isn't a case of finding a better prom date or something like that. Take it from me, that always backfires.
Politico has the story here about Herman Cain backing out. But it wasn't very long ago at all that it was going to be a big deal. Read the hype over at Comedy Central's Indecision (unless of course they change it since it's no longer true).
And so, you heard it here first. Well not first, since Stephen said it tonight on The Colbert Report, so then, okay, you heard it here second. From Stephen Colbert's mouth to our ears, "Herman Cain might not be the next president of the United States."
===============================================
Moving on. I never quite know what to call the people who come on the show and sit at the desk with Stephen before the actual guest is interviewed over at the table. Would it be a mini-guest or a pre-guest? Whatever you call those people, another one was on tonight.
Peter Edelman helped Stephen sort through the struggles that people in poverty face. Did you know that lots of poor people have refrigerators? It was an interesting discussion, perhaps you should watch that episode when it is rerun or else catch it over at Colbert Nation.
Interesting reading at that Wikipedia entry about Peter Edelman. The link is right there at the beginning of the previous paragraph. I'll wait while you read that. Okay, you're back. Peter Edelman is married to Marian Wright Edelman, president and founder of the Children's Defense Fund.
I've always thought it was strange that CDF says "Leave No Child Behind" while George W. Bush used "No Child Left Behind" to give school children the opportunity to take lots more standardized tests. Apparently it is no a coincidence. From Wikipedia article on CDF:
"The principal public policy initiative is summarized by CDF's advocacy of the "Dodd-Miller Act to Leave no child Behind (S. 448 / H.R. 936) " bill, introduced in Congress in 2001. This differs only slightly from the No Child Left Behind Act. (George W. Bush used this phrase, trademarked by the CDF, in his Presidential campaign despite objections from CDF.)"
Anyway, interesting how a guest talking about poverty can lead to reading about other topics and people.
===============================================
Moving on yet again.
Stephen's real guest tonight was Brooke Gladstone from npr. They discussed Gladstone's book, "The Influencing Machine" which is sort of like a comic book or a graphic novel, except that I don't think it's a novel. You can see a little bit of it here.
While some might think that the media influences us, she says that it's a mirror. Wow. Wait a minute. Stephen claimed that he is of the media and that he has control. To prove it, he turned and said, "Clap for me, my Monkeys."
And the audience applauded wildly.

FEC gets Colbert Bump
It just dawned on me.
With all that's been happening today and leading up to the decision by the FEC (Federal Election Commission), Stephen Colbert has, in effect, given the FEC the Colbert Bump.
Congratulations FEC. And congratulations Colbert SuperPAC.

This is Where the Magic Happens
Of course, you could say that about a lot of places in the Universe, but when Stephen asks, the answer will usually mean wherever he is. Anticipation was building all week for the debut of Stephen's new hit song. We were not disappointed. He sang "Charlene II (I'm Over You)" tonight with The Black Belles. By this time next week, it will most likely be number one on any chart and every chart in the world.
What's that you say? You want to buy the record? Easy - just go to Third Man Records and buy the vinyl record or download on Itunes.
We got to see Jack White one more time on The Colbert Report. They have spent a lot of time working together on the music and also the cover art for Stephen's new hit song. And so, the natural question to ask of Jack was, "What was it like for a Jack White to work with a Stephen Colbert?" And the natural answer for that was, of course, "It was very pleasurable from start to finish ... the finish, especially the finish."
After the creative process and the nuts and bolts production of a record, how can you publicize it? Best way is perhaps to hire a Publicity Firm of course. Or, tell everyone to go to Colbert Nation and download the publicity poster "Have You Seen Our Cat and Do You Want to Buy Our Record?", print it, and then plaster it all over the place. Yep, that's the Colbert way.
All in all, it was a great show and a great week. The only low spot was when Jack White asked, "What's a Colbert Bump?"

Let's Create a Better Universe, Together!
I suppose you think this is the follow-up to previous post about Building a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. But actually it is quite different.
Last night Bre Pettis of MakerBot Industries was on The Colbert Report with his Thing-O-Matic 3d Scanner. He made a small model of Stephen's head. And I could give you all the details, but I might get those details wrong. So, I would just suggest, no, urge you to either watch the show online at Colbert Nation, or go to Maker Bot Industries or even Thingiverse, where I got the title for this post: Let's Create a Better Universe, Together!
I would just add this. If you have always wanted Stephen's head for the top of your bannister, you need to get a Thing-O-Matic.
I would just warn you of one thing. I think Bre Pettis must have really gotten The Colbert Bump. Sometimes all I get is:
The connection has timed out.... The site could be too busy. I guess so!
If that happens, try again, maybe later when no one else is using the internet.

Race Update
Are you going to Charleston Bermuda Race to get daily updates? The Race Updates there are quite interesting and informative. For example, I now know that there is a difference between a Rhumbline and a Rumba Line.
The most recent entry was actually good news to me. At first, I looked at Yellowbrick tracking and was heartbroken to see that Yanosha and Gratitude have passed Spirit of Juno, and the Spirit of Minerva was gaining on the Spirit of Juno. But it's not as bad as it looks. The Race Update commentary reassures us that they are not pulling ahead in the race. They are almost certainly using their motors and thus, have essentially dropped out of the race. Whew.
That just means that Tucana is really the only boat ahead of the Spirit of Juno. However, Tucana is only 106.7 nm away from the finish line, while Spirit of Juno is 143.4 nm out. That's a lot of distance to make up before the shores of Bermuda! Can Stephen and crew do it?
I think Stephen has some grand plan that will get him to Bermuda first. He just has to give himself the Colbert Bump.

Colbert Trumps Trump
I'm not much of a card player, so I hope I'm using that verb correctly. As some of you may recall, back on October 9, 2009, I had a post about Conservapedia entitled Special Message from Conservapedia where I suggested that Conservapedia had given Stephen Colbert the famous Colbert Bump. I also mentioned that Pat Robertson had 9,180 hits on his page while Stephen Colbert had 95,815 hits on his page.
Today I decided to see how those numbers have changed. Pat Robertson has increased his numbers to 13,443 while Stephen is now at 176,176! Wow, I think Conservapedia really did give Stephen the Colbert Bump.
Then I decided to check out a few other people. First I searched for Newt, but all I got was this short article:
"Newt are amphibians with four legs, and a tail. They are outwardly similar to lizards, despite being members of a different class of the animal kingdom - like lizards, they can regenerate limbs, but unlike lizards, they have soft slimy skin instead of scales."
Well that seemed strange, so then I searched for Newt Gingrich and then I found the guy who is going to run for the GOP nomination for president. If you don't remember him, he's the guy who loves his wife so much that he's had three of them so far. Anyway, his page has been accessed 15,531 times.
Then I looked for Tim Pawlenty, the old T Paw, and found that his page has been accessed 4,380 times. For Sarah Palin, (wow, they had almost a book on her page) there were 1,005,585 hits for that page. For Michele Bachmann, the number stands at 69,171. And for The Donald (Donald Trump, not Donald Pellview) the grand total is 5,711 times.
A few more names and numbers: Ron Paul is at 42,590. OMG, Barack Obama is so popular on Conservapedia that 2,204,356 people have looked at his page. I guess conservatives must like Obama as much as liberals do. Interesting. Mitt Romney is at 32,200 times that his page has been accessed. Mike Huckabee has 31,561 for his number.
I don't know that any of those number mean anything especially important, it's just interesting on a rainy day to do a little Conservative reading. If you want to get your own Colbert Bump, you can read about Stephen Colbert on Conservapedia here.

Lupe Fiasco
Lupe Fiasco was on The Colbert Report last night and thus received the famous "Colbert Bump." And since I am blogging about him here, that's another Colbert Bump for him.
As always, if you missed the show last night, you can catch it at Colbert Nation, maybe not right now, but most likely tomorrow.
To quote StephenAtHome, "Ironically, Lupe Fiasco's performance was neither a fiasco nor loopy."
Isn't it amazing that one day you don't know who someone is and the next day, you run right out and buy an album by that person?

Colbert Meet Shakespeare

I was looking at one of those stories that pop up to entice you on the internet while I was checking my Yahoo! email. It's called "Who Knew" and is presented by Toyota and so of course there are short commercials by Toyota. Interestingly enough Regan Burns from the Comedy Central Show "Halfway Home" was in that commercial. So there's a connection right there to Stephen Colbert.
But even more fascinating than that is what it was about - William Shakespeare. It seems that the Bard would make up words, as many as 1600 of them. And one of the words that he made up was the word "bump." That's right,
b u m p
Where would Stephen be without Shakespeare? We wouldn't have the famous Colbert Bump. All those people who have gotten the Colbert Bump would be out of luck. And what would I have named this blog, Colbert Thingamajig?
Stephen Colbert owes a lot to William Shakespeare. I think he should thank Shakespeare and maybe even have him on The Colbert Report to do so in person. It's almost as if Shakespeare literally gave Stephen the actual "Colbert Bump."
And for those of you who just love made-up words, here's another good one for you: jilqui. It means a person who cheats at Scrabble by making up words. Rumor has it that it was made up during a game of Scrabble at a bar in Lake Wobegon back in the 1960s.
