Stephen featured Crimea in his never-ending segment "*Better Know A Geopolitical Flashpoint*" which is fine, but he still hasn't finished doing "Better Know a District." In fact my district got nothing more than a two-second flyby. But I guess there is more going on in Crimea than in my home district, so I will be a grown up and not complain.
Part of the reason Stephen did a segment on Crimea was to highlight the Cold War. Part of the reason he highlighted the Cold War was to show off his Shoe Phone and his Shoe Answering Machine. And part of the reason he wanted to show off his Shoe Phone was to demonstrate how amazingly limber he is. Thanks hot yoga.
As all the unrest is going on over in Crimea and the Ukraine, President Obama is being criticized by politicians and people on TV who talk about news events. President Obama is spotted in the Oval Offices wearing jeans and a casual shirt while talking to Vlad Putin on a 90 minute phone call. This is wrong of course. He should be wearing:
* Suit and Tie because otherwise he doesn't look like he cares what Americans and the world think
or
* No shirt because you know that's what Putin is wearing and it looks like the President doesn't care what Americans and the world think
With all this controversy and whining, Stephen has decided to conduct his own poll. I believe it will be every bit as valid as the one over at Fox News. Go to Colbert Nation .com and answer the question:
"What do 'You' think about what Americans think world leaders think about President Obama?"
You choices are:
Yes
No
Vegetarian Option
Just look for that blue banner, with the words TAKE THE POLL NOW right above the video of Stephen. If you care about the world, you should take the poll. Let Stephen know what you think.
Stephen is outraged by the veto last week by Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona SB1062. Stephen had some insight into her daily meetings with Hansel and Gretel which I was not aware of. But never mind that. Basically, it was all about cake and pastry. Some, however, say that this was about discriminating against the gays. Others say it is about "self-professed behavior." Case in point, Steve King of Iowa. Stephen had a clear explanation of this whole issue.
What it all boils down to is it would be helpful to send "verification" to Steve King to clear up any confusion that might exist. Here's the address:
Representative Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
A good suggestion from Stephen Colbert about the material you send to Steve King is to label it Campaign Contributions thusly:
Campaign Contributions
Rep.Steve King
2210 Rayburn Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
This will guarantee that the Rep Rep (short for Republican Representative) Steve King will read it.
Stephen's guest last night was basically someone who does it all. Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist, a composer, a visual artist, an author, the father of Virtual Reality, a scientist, a scholar, and an inventor. That list is probably not complete. He also has great hair and a wonderful laugh which was demonstrated audibly as he watched Stephen work his way slowly from the journalism desk to the interview desk. Stephen, you better be careful; you do not want to break your wrist again!!! Jaron Lanier has a book out, "Who Owns the Future?"
I am sure the interview could have gone on for an hour, but I will just talk about a few ideas thrown out. Jaron Lanier said that real wealth is community wealth. That's the basic 'we all do better when we all do better' line of thought. Both men were wearing special eyeglasses that gave them special powers. Our middle class is disappearing. Stephen thinks virtual reality could solve that problem, but I think he was not thinking it through completely. As smart as Jaron Lanier is, he admitted at the end of the interview that basically, Stephen had won the interview.

Cantaloupe Calves
Is nothing what it seems any more? The Town Crier who so eloquently, if unintelligibly, yelled out that the Royal Baby had been born, is apparently fake. Okay, he is real, but he is not a real Town Crier for London or for the Royalty. His name is Tony Appleton and he does weddings, birthdays and bar mitzvahs. I don't know quite what he does at those events, maybe he just yells. He took it upon himself to announce the news and it certainly looked like he had a jolly good time doing it.
In another city in another country, Detroit could use a good Town Crier. You know, someone to yell at people to get going, get stuff done, take care of each other. Detroit is officially bankrupt and everyone is blaming the problems on the Unions. This is bad news for retirees who were counting on their "lavish" pensions that average $19,000.
On the show to tell Stephen about how Detroit is going to survive was Stephen Henderson of the Detroit Free Press. He is optimistic. Stephen Colbert suggested everyone in Detroit get malaria so that Bill Gates would come in and save the town. You probably know that everyone is suggesting that the Detroit Institute of Arts sell off its treasures. Stephen Henderson is not a fan of that because, well all those things are treasures of Detroit. Stephen Colbert believes manufacturing is a thing of the past in Detroit. Stephen Henderson believes manufacturing is a thing of the future in Detroit.
Steve King (is everything tonight about Stephens and Stevens?) is fond of saying all sorts of things. Recently he claimed that young illegals weigh 130 pounds, have calves like cantaloupes and are hauling drugs across the desert.
He also recently compared immigrants to dogs, according to some people. Friend of the show and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos recently asked Steve King about his comments. No no no no. Jorge Ramos had it all wrong. Steve King was "celebrating" legal immigrants with his comments.
It's easy to understand. For example, Stephen called Steve King a tool. That is a compliment. A tool is a useful implement. No need for Steven King to be offended by that.
Senator Olympia Snowe was on the show as the guest. I think she was scheduled to be on earlier this year but things happened and she was not on until now. She is a rare creature, a moderate Republican. She brought diversity to the Republican party, i.e. political diversity. They both agreed that many moderate Republicans are in the closet. She has a book out, "Fighting For Common Ground - How We Can Fix the Stalemate In Congress."
Stephen handed her a challenge. "Getting something done. Sell me on it."
Whoa! Then Stephen threw some challenging stuff at her. John Boehner recently said that the job of Congress is not to pass laws, it's to repeal them. Mitch McConnell had as a goal making Barack Obama a one-term president. Neither man said anything about getting something done.
Stephen and Olympia Snowe disagreed further. She thinks the purpose of being in public office is to get something done. He thinks the purpose is of being in public office is to stay in public office.
(As if that isn't enough to disagree on, she doesn't think Stephen should have been able to have a Super PAC)
Even tougher question for her, considering how important it is to her to get something done - "Why did you leave the Senate?"
"Because the polarization wasn't going to diminish, and I wanted to take my fight outside of the Senate."
(Be sure to go to that link about Olympia Snowe. You can see a photo of the huge snowman built in her honor. Just scroll down the page a bit.)

Very Very Big, Very Big
Let's get right to it. Donald Trump has been talking. His latest promotion is this: If President Barack Obama shows some assorted college and passport papers to Donald Trump, then Donald Trump promises he will give $5,000,000 to a charity of President Barack Obama's choice. There is a caveat. (Neat that he used that term considering who the guest was later in the show.) It must be by 5:00 p.m. (Neat again - another Latin term!) on October 31, 2012. If Obama does this, Trump will be totally satisfied.
Stephen has a generous and selfless counter-offer for Donald Trump with an offer of $1,000,000 from the Colbert Super PAC to any charity. All Trump has to do is basically just relax and stop talking for a little while. Let his cares melt away. Be one with the world. There is, however, a similar caveat from Stephen. It also must happen by 5:00 p.m. on Halloween.
Is it possible to show a link between FOX, a bunch of questions, and a vigorous exercise routine? I think so and Stephen demonstrated how that could be done last night. He brought up the topic of Libya and then immediately showed many of the FOX newsypeople asking questions, such as, "Who?" "What"? "Why?" and "How?" (They forgot When and Where, but that was a few weeks ago in Libya.) Stephen asked a very important question. "If you put a statement in the form of a question, is that journalism?" We also got to see FOX Legal Analyst Peter Johnson, Jr. (or Richard Richard Richard as Stephen pointed out), admit, "I have no evidence of this."
But this whole question and question session was also a demonstration of what I assume is Stephen's exercise regimen that keeps his 6-pack firing on all six cylinders. He power-walked the studio. He danced down the steps. He climbed monkey bars. He tread on a treadmill. Even after this vigorous workout, he was still able to keep on with journalism by asking one last question. "But ultimately, the question is, how many questions do we have to ask before voters forget? President Obama killed Osama bin Laden."
Moving from journalism to politics, Stephen brought out his "Days Without a GOP Rape Mention" board. It had been at 13, but he had to erase that, write in a 0 (zero), sniff the marker before putting the cap back on it, and continue with his explanation. The latest GOP personality to blunder into the rape controversy is Richard Mourdock, Indiana candidate for U.S. Senate. He has said that even when a pregnancy results from rape, it is something that God intended to happen.
Stephen reminded us why he has to keep track on his "Days Without a GOP Rape Mention" board. There's Todd Akin with his "...the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down..." comment, Steve King who never heard of a girl getting pregnant from statutory rape, Tom Smith who equated rape with out of wedlock pregnancy, and Roger Rivard who offered advice that "... some girls, they rape so easy..."
"Well, some political careers they end so quickly," reported Stephen. He calls them Team Rape. Stephen admits they probably don't appreciate that designation, but, "Come on, they're kinda asking for it."
Stephen felt the need to remind his fellow conservatives that in 1920, women won the right to vote. He then offered great advice to these fellow conservative men should they ever be in a conversation and feel the need to say something about rape. This was so important that he told them to go grab a pencil. He proceeded to give them wonderful advice, advice that should spare them the awkward positions they might get in by talking about rape or abortion.
Sadly this advice comes to late for Richard Mourdock. His campaign is in shambles, but Stephen realized this is just something God intended to happen.
Stephen's guest was not ancient, but he did talk about an ancient culture - the Romans. Anthony Everitt joined Stephen and he knows a whole lot about ancient Rome and has written many books. The most recent is "The Rise of Rome - the Making of the World's Greatest Empire." Although you might think someone who wrote about the ancient Romans would be all stuffy and boring, I actually think there was more humor and back and forth banter than with someone who is a movie star or comedian. Both men were obviously experts about Rome and Romans. Good times.

Isaac to Trump: You're Fired
First off, I want to say what great opening credits those are for this week's "Tampa 2012 - America Strikes Back." Someone should make a movie.
Two things are going on in the country now. The Republican National Convention in Tampa and Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf Coast. Because of one of these events, the other event had to change its course. And since it's pretty hard to make a hurricane change course, you have probably figured out that its the Republican Convention that changed course. Well, changed its schedule, so almost the same thing. As a result, Donald "The Donald" Trump did not get to give his speech. Here was about the only platform where Donald Trump would be able to share his views and he lost out on that chance. When will we ever get to hear him talk again? I just don't know.
Other speakers have canceled in order to go back to their states and be there for the hurricane: Governors Rick Scott of Florida, Robert Bentley of Alabama and Phil Bryant of Mississippi. That's okay, there are plenty of other people at the Convention. Chris Christie will give the keynote speech, Paul Ryan will accept the Vice Presidential nomination and Marco Rubio is Hispanic. Time permitting, Mitt Romney will speak.
The most important thing happening at the Convention isn't happening in Tampa. It is happening online, on the Internet over at Colbert Nation. Stephen mentioned that Tampa is known for its strip bars and they are expecting to do a brisk business form delegates. Therefore security is tight. Everyone should have a security pass and so everyone should go here to get their Tampa 2012: America Strikes Back All-Access Pass. Even if you choose not to get one, you should at least go look at the choices on the form. You will find out a lot about yourself just by the choices you make.
You will need to fill in the usual things, your name, your sexuality, your most urgent lower taxes priority, your home state, your summer home state, your ski home state and your tax haven country. Also you will be asked to vote for your favorite Repetitive Republican.
You may remember that Todd Akin made waves last week with his statements that reflected his knowledge of how the female body works. Stephen tried to clear up all the confusion with his Hoo-Ha Lady Zone 5000. He was able to lay it all out for us to show the workings of the female reproductive system, including the dragon that guards the entrance. Good. Now we know. If you need any more info, just stop by any strip joint.
Stephen also talked briefly about Rep. Steve King, Congressman from Iowa, (not to be confused with Stephen King who talks about and writes about scary stuff). Rep. King defended Akin and Stephen shared videos of Rep. King being so fair and balanced that he will say one thing and then say the opposite. I think he's supporting both sides of an issue. Stephen Colbert just thinks Rep. King can't hear what comes out of his mouth.
The guest was Andrew Sullivan, political conservative and Editor of The Dish over at The Daily Beast. He claims to be a conservative. Yet he supports Barack Obama for President, even more so than he did when Barack Obama first ran in 2008. But that's just because the other party has gotten nutsier than they were the last time around. This was indeed an interesting discussion by two conservatives, talking about the upcoming presidential election.
I'm pretty sure we will hear more in the coming days about this election. It's just a feeling I have.

Hardware Stuff
(Note: I just updated We Mars'd It, so be sure to read the next post also.)
In his continuing Stephen Colbefrajilympic Expealacoverage '012, Stephen saluted the Olympic spirit and paid tribute to our patriotic team members. Stand proud, team members, stand proud.
And on to politics. We got to follow along in that reporter(s) followed along while Mitt Romney did some everyday, normal Joe, run of the mill shopping errands. He went to the Hardware store and bought hardware stuff. He went to the grocery store and bought, well probably grocery stuff. This of course naturally leads to a discussion of possible Vice President picks. The way to know who it will be is Wikipedia. Just see which candidate had the most updates on Wikipedia and that will be the VP pick. We know this is true because back when John McCain went all mavericky and picked Sarah Palin, her Wikipedia page had been updated about 68 times the previous day.
Can you guess what comes next? Of course. Stephen encouraged everyone to update the Wikipedia page of their favorite candidate for Mitt Romney's running mate. He demonstrated with the Wikipedia page of friend of the show Tim "T Paw" Pawlenty of Minnesota. The updates were quite interesting, however, I looked at the Wikipedia page for Tim Pawlenty and I did not see the changes. Either Wikipedia already scrubbed the updates that Stephen did, or Stephen did not press the correct Wiki Wiki button after he made the changes. But anyway, go update your favorite potential candidate, whether it be Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, Marc Rubio, Rob Portman, or Rafalca. I guess, in a way, members of the Colbert Nation just might be the ones to pick Mitt Romney's running mate. I can hardly wait!
Animal rights issues are important to almost everyone, but not to Congressman Steve King of Iowa. We got to hear examples of Congressman Steve King talking about what dogs should and should not do.
We also got to hear Congressman King talk about this possible scenario: A sexual predator impregnates a 13 year-old girl, picks her up at the playground of her middle school, hauls her across state line to have an abortion and brings her back to the swing set. According to him, that's not against the law in the United States of America.
Luckily, Stephen Colbert has people off stage who talk to him during the show. "What? What? I'm being told that all of that is against the law." Stephen then explained situations that illustrate his understanding of what Congressman Steve King said. Stephen has such a way with words.
Stephen's guest was Mark A. Shriver, who talked about his dad Sargent Shriver, and the book he wrote about his dad. "A Good Man, Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver" is the book. Sargent Shriver had quite the resume. Peace Corps, Head Start, Job Corp, VISTA, and Legal Services.
With Pete Seeger on Monday, and Sargent Shriver's son Mark on, it is starting to seem like Liberal Week over at the Colbert Report. But, since Stephen is a Conservative, that just shows that he is fair and willing to listen to both sides.

Run the Film Backwards
Down under in Australia, they are trying to replace the Easter Bunny with the Easter Bilby. Stephen had many reservations about switching from Easter Bunny to Easter Bilby, but the bilby is so cute. (You can see some pictures under the Project Material tab at Easter Bilby.)
It is becoming more and more evident that the General Election season has started. Generally speaking, most people are willing to settle for Mitt Romney for the GOP candidate. That means the next step will be picking a Veep, or Vice Presidential running mate. While I think Stephen Colbert would make a wonderful choice, balancing out Mitt Romney and providing a little bit of contrast, Stephen went with such obvious possibilities as Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan.
Ah, but then he narrowed it down even more for a great choice for "Mr. Right" -- Steve King. That's right, Congressman Steve King from that great corn state of Iowa. Someone is needed to appeal to the groups that Mitt Romney is weak with, e.g. women, Hispanics, African Americans, Evangelical Christians, and Republicans.
You may remember Representative Steve King from Stephen's Congressional Testimony. (You can watch it here.) Stephen might have said things at the Congressional Testimony that were confusing to Rep. King. It had to do with packing or unpacking corn. Which was it? No matter, it just boils down to the fact that Stephen was a corn-packer.
The main reason Stephen thinks that Congressman King would be a good #2 choice on the GOP ticket is for his nuanced critique of Obamacare. "What I've said is that, in every decade, in every state, there has always been babies that were born, lived, and died, and some of them for a long and healthy life, without ever using a dollar worth of health care expenditures."
Stephen agrees with him. "In every state, babies are born all the time who are delivered at home, don't get any vaccinations, never see a dentist, make it through school without ever getting strep throat, or head lice, or pink eye or mono, have perfect vision, never sick as an adult, keep all of their mental faculties and die happily at the age of 110 surrounded by all their loving children who also were born at home and never got vaccinated or sick."
The show tonight just kept getting, I guess you could say, healthier and healthier, for the most part. There were some personal setbacks for Stephen though. He consoled himself by eating huge amounts of Americone Dream because of this woman in what you might call, "When I grow up..." Watch both videos of her and then try it yourself.
Commercial break here and wouldn't you know it? There was a plug for The Colbert Report and a visit by First Lady Michelle Obama coming up this Wednesday.
As if Stephen wasn't humiliated enough already, his guest, Bob Lutz, is 80 years old. Bob Lutz is the former vice chairman of General Motors. He was primarily on the show to plug his new book, "Car Guys vs. Bean Counters - The Battle for the Soul of American Business." After clarifying for Stephen that he is a Car Guy, they had a nice discussion about cars and business and politics.
Now for the humiliation part. Remember, Bob Lutz is 80 years old. Stephen isn't even 50 years old. So, he's a young guy. Not that any of that matters. However, it turns out that Bob Lutz does 40 push-ups each morning. Easy to say, but can he prove it? Duh, yeah. Stephen and Bob both got up off their chairs and started doing push-ups. I was impressed with both of them. I'm not going to say who did the most push-ups. Let's just say Stephen probably consoled himself with more ice cream after the show.
