Rainbow Icons

Sports was featured last night as in the Sport Report. In what was a big surprise to some, but probably not to others, Alex Rodriguez, or The Rod, will be suspended from baseball for 400 years for using performance enhancing drugs.

Not to worry if you need to watch sports. The Winter Olympics are coming soon. This year the Games will be in Sochi, Russia from February 7 to 23, 2014, or if you are over there, they will be from 7-23 February 2014. Take a look at the official website using that link right up in first sentence. Lots of information and a really cool chart that shows which events will be held on which days. There's great color-coded icons for each sport, so it's easy to see on that chart which of your favorite sports is happening on which days. My favorite, Curling, is listed 6th on that chart. Never mind that the sports are in alphabetical order. I still think it's because Curling is so popular that it is near the top of the list. It looks like the USA Men's team will be meeting Norway for their first competition. Oh I hope the USA Men's Curling Team has great fashion designers working on their uniforms. Those Norwegian Men can intimidate you just by coming on the ice in their bold uniforms. So go look at the Winter Olympics website. I absolutely love the rainbow color theme used for the chart and sport icons.

You can also go over to the website and support your team. Right now, here's the Likes:

Russian Fed 344
Latvia 232
Lithuania 134
Canada 108
Ukraine 62
United States 60
Belarus 41
France 32
Kazakhstan 25
Japan 22

As we get closer to the Olympics, I'm sure those numbers will go up.

Delegate member and tennis great Billie Jean King did show up to discuss going to the Olympics as probably the most famous gay athlete. She said she won't protest, but if the media asks questions, she will give them answers.

Deborah Solomon was Stephen's guest last night. She has a book out now about Norman Rockwell - "American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell." Stephen likes Norman Rockwell's art because it is realistic. He can look at a painting and recognize it's a painting of a mailman.  We got to see some of the more famous paintings of Norman Rockwell and we got to hear Stephen sound exactly like a cultured art critic. Deborah Solomon explained to Stephen that Norman Rockwell believed in equality, and tolerance and voted for JFK and LBJ. Their discussion was a little loud and almost confrontational at times which seems amazing, considering they were discussing Norman Rockwell.

Polar Bears Going Door to Door

If you are looking to head to the beach this weekend, you could head North. The North Pole is now sitting in the North Pole Lake. That's right, for the past 10 summers, the North Pole has turned from ice to water. This should make you think about Climate Change with a whole new perspective.

Congress. Still working just as hard as you think they are. That is not much of a compliment, in case you are wondering. Stephen mentioned HR 2904, a House bill that the Republicans are hoping Obama will sign and sign quickly. It's that one that says, "This is not another repeal of Obamacare, we swear, but don't look inside, just sign it! sign it!"

Senator Mitch McConnell was given a shout-out on the show. Although he has the nickname of Senator Gridlock, in part because of his numerous filibusters, he is taking heat from Tea Party groups who complained about his progressive liberal voting record.

This points up a problem in Washington. Some members of Congress might try to get stuff done, but then voters hold them accountable for what they have done. The solution is to keep it all secret until the year 2064 when Honey Boo Boo is president. So, Congress will do the People's Business, but it's just none of the People's Business to know about it.

Another Senator was mentioned, that Canadian favorite son, Ted Cruz. He and Stephen Colbert are in some sort of (private???) contest to see who is the most humble. Every day Ted Cruz (apparently) reminds himself of how humble he is. I just wish there was some way the two men could meet and have an official humility contest. Stephen Colbert would be way better than Ted Cruz. His humility is one of the traits he is proudest of.

Stephen's guest was Atul Gawande, a surgeon AND journalist, among other things. Go just read that first paragraph about him here at Wikipedia and you'll probably agree that he's a busy man. And yet he had time to be on the The Colbert Report. He also is an associate professor over at Harvard. I think that might be why he was one of those guests who is surprised when Stephen interrupts him. (Sorry Stephen, but it's true. Sometimes you don't let your guests finish saying what they were talking about.) Perhaps as a surgeon and a professor, Atul Gawande is used to people listening to everything he says and not asking questions until he asks if there are any questions from anyone. This is pure speculation on my part.

Anyway, he wrote an article for The New Yorker about "Slow Ideas." You should read it. If you think it is too long, then just read one page per day and in a week you will be done reading it. I will mention that Stephen did joke a bit with him about writing about Slow Ideas and then publishing it in a magazine.... Whatever.

Okay, let me check:
__ Title for this post - done
__ North Pole - done
__ Congress - done
__ Mitch McConnell - done
__ Honey Boo Boo - done
__ Ted Cruz - done
__ Atul Gawande - done

Great. I remembered to write about everything on my checklist. (And only one day late.)  Well done. Pat myself on the back.

I'm A Very Famous Person

Immigration. Stephen talked about that last night especially as it relates to Arizona. While the Supreme Court pretty much slapped Arizona's hand, Stephen was quick to point out that states have their own state birds. However, some states do have the same bird, for example the Northern Cardinal, as their State Bird. Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia all have the Northern Cardinal. In fact, if you look at the photos, it appears that they all have the exact same Northern Cardinal.

But yes, each state has their own State Bird and should therefore be able to have their own Immigration Standards. And Currency (with Jan Brewer's portrait?). And Standing Army. And Olympic Team. And Space Program. And debts to China.

Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger last night looked at Pixar's latest treat for us - Brave. If you go to the website for Brave, you can see a preview. So that's like watching part of the movie for free. Go ahead, watch it now, then come back here. I haven't see the movie, but I know how to make it work out for everyone. Merida should go to a shoe store, buy a glass boot and then find the guy who fits the boot. Once upon a time that would be good enough. Times are different now.  A simple story about a girl with a mind of her own sends some people looking for secret agendas. I'm anxious to see this movie. I think it will be charming. From the preview, you see the girl molded into her appropriate dress, just like people try to mold her into her perfect stereotyped role. More power to a girl who breaks that mold.

If you watched The Colbert Report last night, I'm willing to bet you found yourself all of a sudden hungry for chicken. And not just any chicken, but some Kentucky Fried Chicken. Stephen talked turkey, oops, chicken, and commercials and Dish Network. Seems they have come up with a way for you to skip right through the commercials. You might think that's a great thing, but as you may have noticed, advertising is all over. If people are not watching the commercials during breaks in The Colbert Report, then the only alternative is for the commercials to be on during the actual show. Thus, we got to see most every kind of chicken you can get over at Kentucky Fried Chicken. And if you get so hungry with all this talk about Kentucky Fried Chicken, you can go to the the website for KFC and find out everything you want to know about KFC. You can even find the nearest KFCs using the Store Locator.

Last night's guest, Richard Ford, is a novelist. Right away Stephen had a problem with that because that means he writes fiction which is made up which means it's all a bunch of lies. Then Stephen had a problem with Richard Ford's latest book, "Canada" because it's about Canada and not about the USA. He also boasted, well not boasted, but told Richard Ford "I'm a very famous person."  Once all that posturing was over and done with, they had a nice conversation. We learned how Richard Ford drove to Canada one day, and felt like the weight of the world was lifted. It took him three years to write the book but it's been in his mind since 1989. "I was in Kindergarten then," Stephen noted. Ah yes, Stephen found a clever way to tell Richard Ford he is old. No matter. "Is it true you keep your notes and manuscripts in the freezer?" Stephen asked him. Apparently yes! If there's a fire, the freezer will probably be the last thing to burn, so his manuscript would be safe. Both agreed the ideas would also be fresher.

Stephen did admit to visiting Canada, Vancouver to be precise. Canada is our neighbor, after all, so I am quite sure Stephen actually thinks of Canadians as friends. You know what would be more fun than reading the book, "Canada?" Reading it in Canada!
